1. Thanks to the advice given here the recording was a success! It took a while for FOH to work out how to route tracks to the correct AES50 port but once that was sorted it all worked great. The language barrier didn't help. THANKS
2. Old news http://basschat.co.uk/topic/305668-turn-your-electric-bass-into-a-double-bass/
3.
can imagine myself getting caught by surprise and not saying anything at the moment,
That's me
but i would feel ashamed for complaining to the company when at the right moment i kept my mouth shut. IMO,
That too
4. I have D'Addario ENR71 half rounds on my fretless [ebony board]....no board wear at all. I find them a bit taught though on fretless - i have a set of TI Jazz flats in my spares box, just waiting until I can be arsed to fit them...
5. A meter reader came round the other morning. A chatty man, he was. I showed him to the cupboard under the stairs, to read the meters, which is in the corner of the lounge. He spotted some basses sat on their stands over in the annex to the lounge which I call my studio. "I play guitar," he says " I've got an Ibanez [something or other] with Seymour Duncans" He wanders across the room "Oh nice Musicman," he says He pulls the E string as far as he can then THWACK it whacks back on the fretboard. He then grabs the Status necked P next to it and does the same. The action on the StatusP is very very low and the E string whacked back on the full length of the fretboard. "The action's too low on those, they're unplayable," he says "Where's your Jazz? Every pro has a Jazz - Ahh there it is, pointing to my JV P" I point out to him that I'm not a pro and that I play with fingers and a fairly light touch and that they're perfectly playable and that the 'Jazz' is actually a Precision..... "Nah" he says and turns for the door....? wtf was that all about?
6.
Ah, the curse of Smoke on the Water!
Also known as 'Pink Panther Syndrome'
7. All our gigs are in reasonable sized rooms (c500 capacity) - all shapes. We always have PA support. We tend to angle our cabs so that they point somewhat across the stage. We use them solely for hearing ourselves Many of the venues don't have enough foldback channels to satisfy all of us. I normally won't get one. I'm normally behind the keys next to the drums. We discovered this trick in US last year, the guitarist points his amp across the stage at 90degrees to the audience! I point mine across the stage too. With this setup the onstage sound is akin to rehearsals Dispersion is not an issue for us. The audience only get the PA sound, really The keys uses his wedge as his only source of hearing himself.
8.
... but I've already got a p bass
and that's a problem because? I've got 4
9.
He was THE lowest of the low slung bassists of my era.
Simon Gallup goes lower -I'm sure
10. I hang mine quite low, playing fingers. We've added an old song to the set for which I have to use a pick. I find it easier to shorten the strap by 6 inches or so to play the picked song.
11. At the beginning for me but then I only follow it with a little chorus (rarely) and some subtle tube crunch (very subtle)
12.
In fairness to the promoter, you have specified "at least". With the amount of confusion there is over watts and impedance, even without a language barrier, the 500w 4ohm could be considered more than you requested in that it would potentially deliver more volume.
He's fluent in English. He spent days moaning about the cost of renting a cab. and claimed to be unable to source one. A 20 second google found a backline rental place in Barcelona I linked him to exactly something suitable. He rented something else.
13.
I have to raise this point as it will get mentioned sooner or later. Unless it's a small enough gig that you won't be going through a PA, why bother taking your head in the first place?
because i won't get a monitor and I'm a prima donna I
14. and does it just die when the bettery goes or is there some warning?
15. I'd like an AES50 ethernet connection with conversion to both Dante and MADI
16.
Could have been worse... A 4 Watt cab at 800 Ohms..?
good point well made Yes I know the 500W 4ohm cabinet will probably survive...but why should I have to have that worry?
17. New to this Musicman malarkey Got a Sterling 4HH How many hours of playing it before your average Duracell battery runs out? I've never had a bass with a battery in it before (apart from a P-retro which just got recharged after every session).....
18. Gigs coming up in Spain....lots of grief over backline I like to take my own head to gigs. It saves me learning unfamiliar amp controls and allows me to achieve a familiar sound fairly quickly. It's a Puma 900 The tech rider asks specifically for: A bass cabinet rated at a minimum of 900W at 4ohms or 500W at 8ohms SO (after I rejected the idea of using the support band's kit) what does the Spanish promoter email me to say he has rented? A 500W 4ohm cab.... I emailed back telling him that if it blows up - and it's likely to - I am not responsible and does he really want the bass cab to go pop in the middle of the gig? HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO GET IT RIGHT?
19. I enjoy watching the whole bill. However often this isn't happening. These days we have support bands - we're never the support band. Normally the promoter lays on a meal with local 'personalities' between soundcheck and gig. Normally this occurs 'off site'. Normally we are transported back to the venue and let in the stage door during the latter stages of the support band's set. This prevents us seeing the support band
20.
The note Db is Db, be it played on the fourth fret of a string tuned to Ab or the fifth fret of a string tuned to A.
The 4th fret of a string tuned to Ab is a C, surely? The 5th fret of a string tuned to A is a D, isn't it? Neither are Db
21. In A 440 - He's playing in C# In A 415.3 - He's playing in D haha
22.
A professional would charge somewhere between £200 - £300 at least for that I'd guess.
If that's the case his quote is definitely fair
23. OK so now I've had a quote from a friend who does some spraying for him to do it. I'm wondering if his quote is fair......so how much do you think is the right price to sand back the existing poly finish to give a key for new paint and apply new paint and clear coat?
