£2000 is definitely realistic for a private sale. Yep, there's diamonds and dogs in that era and the ratio of dogs to diamonds increases from about '74 onwards. Make sure you try before you buy.. most 34" basses (not just Fenders) are susceptible to the dead spot, but IME it has to be pretty severe to be noticable whilst gigging or recording. Don't get too hung up looking for a Sadowsky-like neck pocket - you could be looking for a while. Just make sure it feels stable. Check for fretwear - the frets on bound necks can be replaced, but it's time-consuming and expensive. And, be aware of the weight if it's something that bothers you. Some 70s Jazzes are heavier than a bus. (Incidentally, as for Fender vs. Boutique, to be blunt.. you won't have much of a problem with resale if you go Fender. If you buy a new boutique bass, make sure you're prepared and able to take a hit when you sell it.)
Hey @wateroftyne, anything you can find out would be great! Especially regarding quality and possibility of customisation (I'd love a neck with no inlays).
I've just spoken to Gaz.. he's rushed off his feet at the moment, but going to give me some more info ASAP.

Would someone recommend me a CD to check out please.
I'd go for this amazing value for what you get- http://www.ebay.co.u...=item337002020a I'd upgrade to the new Preamp and you have a lot of bass for so little.
They look excellent value for money! Trouble is, when a company like this only has an eBay store and doesn't say much about their product I get suspicious! How come they're so cheap? Where are they made? Can they do custom requests, etc? I'd be delighted if someone has dealt with Seco Guitars before and could recommend them...especially for fifty quid!
He's a mate of mine, so I can vouch that the necks do exist! I'll have a chat with him about it and see what I can find out...

I lack the additional £1500 needed to make this happen....
So what you are saying is you want him to buy it and post it to you?
Heh. It's worth adding that if any BC'er does want this, I'll be happy to keep it safe until they're able to collect it. (That's a genuine offer.. not a joke!)
The only think I can offer is that Wot is a trad Fender guy ( probably) ...so how will this sit on gigs..?
Got it in one, matey....
Price isn't the issue though is it? it is already a great price. It's a question of can I afford this? Y/N Could I get a better bass for less or similar money? Y/N If I bought and wanted to sell later could I make the money back? Y/N Do I want this bass? do the positives out way the negatives? Just spoken to the chap again. He won't budge on the price, which is fair enough. Hmm. Now what...? Gaaaaah!

Ha ha.. I noticed that. I'm still wrestling with myself over this one. It feels like a bargain, but it's not quite what I want. What to do, what to do...

Electric vs. acoustic bass for acoustic trio?
wateroftyne replied to lewyyy's topic in General Discussion
I could always play an electric and see how it goes...
Do that. After one gig they'll never give it another thought. As a concession, consider sticking flats on it. -
Electric vs. acoustic bass for acoustic trio?
Being pedantic I would have thought that the whole point of going acoustic is to use acoustic gear.
But only since the 1990s... -
Electric vs. acoustic bass for acoustic trio?

Stick to electrics. I never got this 'acoustic bands need an acoustic bass' thing. It's all a bit 90s MTV unplugged. Plus, acoustic basses generally aren't very good. IMO, of course. -
Hmm.. not sure...
Do it. Someone needs to buy this to take the temptation away from me
If it had been 3-tone burst, I'd be sitting playing it now..! I'm such a luddite.

I've just been back to see it, this time armed with a better idea of how the Audere works. I found the out-and-out P tone. and it's bloody lovely. Gah.. this bass is sweet! I just can't pull myself out of my Fender comfort zone...
isn't it the hi/lo z thingy.... like i know what that means off the top of my head
Something like that..
how heavy was it? (compared to other things?)
Umm... at a guess? 9-9.5lbs maybe. A pound heavier than I'd like. All the weight is in the body - it balances very well indeed. It's got them lightweight Hipshots on it. I spent half-and-hour thinking the little tree-way flick switch was a pickup selector. it wasn't (it's a phase switch or summat), and that explains why I struggled to find an out-and-out P tone. My fault.

(Mods - if this is in the wrong place could you move it, please? Thank you!) Hi all This is a public service announcement. I'm on the hunt for a PJ, and I spotted this on Gumtree for £930. It's up Gosforth way, for anyone who knows the area. I've just been to see it and my God, it's lovely... It's totally beautiful in a slightly bling way. The neck is very flamey (you can't tell in the photos). It's in excellent condition and it's one of the nicest playing basses I've ever played (IYKWIM). The notes are clean, even and lively right the way to the top. I didn't buy it because the preamp (which I thought was a J-retro, but I've just looked it up and it's an Audere) sounds too 'active' for my tastes, and it it's a little bit heavier than my ideal weight (but not 'heavy' by any means). It balances very well. I have no affiliation with the seller whatsoever, but I thought I'd do a public service and post my findings here in case anyone is interested.
