1. Ah... gutted to hear that, Clarky. I'm sure you've done it for the right reasons. Onwards and upwards!
2. ...and whatever your opinion of PW sonically, it's an album full of proper songs and great bass parts, which is something they don't seem to bother with too much these days.
3. IMO, the best track on Hold Your Fire, and one of my favourite bass parts ever... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1qgn7KSPgo
4. I really like it. It's 'of the time', but it stands up well.
5.
Nice... although I was kindof hoping it would be the Steinberger headless. I have a live video from I think the Grace Under Pressure tour where he is using that, and the tone is also marvellous. Also getting into Signals, so what bass is on that? :-) Jennifer
Yeah - because to Wal wasn't his, I suppose he had to wait a while for his to built... the Steiny was used on most of that tour. Signals... there's a bit of a debate as to what is Steiny, what is Rick, and what is Jazz on that album. It's one of my favourites.
6. Peter Collins' Wal with light gauge strings, DI'd. SPRAAAANG!
7.
And I think it is that 'weight' that I am trying to describe as the difference between the ABM and the mibass. Possibly. Cheers Geoff
Yeah - it's not volume.. it's more of a transient thing, I think. Hard to describe.
8.
The digital amp debate is an interesting one.... I used a Streamliner for a bit and really liked the tone, but like a fool I sold it Had a wonderful Demeter preamp/Crown power amp setup a while back that sounded just incredible. I sold the Crown as it was so heavy and replaced it with a Peavey IPR 1600 2u digital power amp, and that didn't sound half as good. But then I also had an Epifani Quest pre with a Peavey DPC1400X 1u digital power amp and that was lush beyond. Not sure what this tells us, apart from the fact that I change gear too much!!!!
I can't claim to have used all Class D heads, but the Streamliner is the first one I've tried that can mix it with the heavyweights when it comes to sheer 'weight' behind the notes.
9.
Lovely job. Perhaps he can do something classy for that keyboard too! :-)
That's also a Howard effort. It was a boring old Yamaha baby grand until he got hold of it....
10. Look what I did...
11. I love my Roscoe Beck IV dearly, so I thought I'd treat it to a little surprise.. a Tort pickguard, custom-made by BC's own Howard the Bass Doc. What a job he's done! The tort is lovely and subtle.. not far from my 70s Ps & Js. Although the RB shape is a bugger to recreate with so many switches and sliders, he turned it around in no time at all for a very reasonable price. And, if I say so myself, it looks quite awesome... If you need a new PG, Howard's your man!
12.
Have a new flatwound of choice then Mr WoT?
Well, I've used the FLs for twelve years now.. I've switched to the Laklands, and it's a nice change. I don't know how they'll fare in the long-term, but so far they're very nice...
13. These ones - still in the packet, never used: £25, posted in the UK.
14.
Dunlops are nice (and cheap)
+1 - lots of chat on Talkbass about how they're similar to the DR's.
15. OMG.. Roscoe Beck bass, how much do I love thee... Here's a clip from a drummer-less trio gig I did last night. It's got kind-of a bass solo in it, but not really. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THJ22v5cLmg
16. OP - just to clarify, do you mean TC Classic 450?
17. I agree with some of the above.. £1200 is silly money for an AVRI. Hang on, and buy used.
18.
Im aware of my stupid question, but im after a dark tortoise shell pickguard.. ive seen very bright red guards, or a darker guards as seen on this beauty... this is what im after.. also im aware that some pickguards have different hole positions.. i want one for an MIJ 75, just like the one in the pic... i think maybe im taking my chances when i order one....
Yip - there's lots of types of tort. Some nice, some not-so-nice (think 'pepperoni', which is the common reissue & aftermarket material). Howard the Bass Doc has some new tort in stock which looks remarkably similar to what's on my 70s Ps & Js. Drop him a PM.
19.
No in all seriousness I'm not dissing the people who use them! i just can't really think of ANY SERIOUS PLAYERS that use them!!!
20.
Just met up with another pro bass playing friend who has a few berg cabs AE112,HS210 HT112ER!! i took over my ebs pro line 4x10, aguilar 1x12 gs x2 and aguilar th500 amp ebs td650. 21.
Sure they do..what?
Horses. For courses.
22. Pair of HS210s here.... never really thought about changing them in a few years now. OP - did you give the driver a chance to break in?
23. I like that this has the 3DPM thing going on. It really seems to make a difference...
