It's an Electric Blue 180, yes it has a DI output. I was told this was for recording and once conected no sound would emit from the speaker.
I don't think that's correct. From the Ashdown website:
a front panel-mounted balanced DI output for connection to a PA or recording console
Which Ashdown combo is it? Some of them have a DI out. If it has that you use that.
On behalf of all Johnny Cash fans & country bass players, I'd just like to say listen to some bluegrass players. All the top Nashville bass players are actually serious virtuosos when you see them in soundchecks or just messing around! The PurpleBlob is right - deceptively simple sometimes!?
+1 on this. Even when it's 1/5 there's a groove to be grabbed.
I depends what you want to use it for.
+1 If you want transparency the Aphex Punch Factory is good. If you want more of a old school sixties motown type valve compression try an Electro-Harmonix Black Finger - which I use. As I'm sure many people here will say, you might need to go through a few different ones 'til you find what you want.
As if the cheeky buggers! They promised it wasnt a return. Ill never be going to GuitarGuitar again.
Nor me but be thankful that you (like me) were smart enough to think that the price was just too low and that there had a be a catch otherwise you might have just hit the 'buy' button. -
Sweet, that's where I'll go then. I want to give the Orange bass terror a go as well before I fork out for one or the other.
They could only get the Walkabout on sale or return because the UK distributor already had some (I don't know how many) in stock. If it was going to come from Mesa in the US they were going to want a deposit before it was ordered. It's worth phoning them in advance to see what they've got in stock. -
I bought my Walkabout 1X12 from GuitarGuitar. It was the original two input model. I had all sorts of problems with it which the distributors (also based in Glasgow) did their best to sort out. After a few attempts they decided to replace it with a new one which was the new one input model. It has been great. I sometimes wonder what happened to my old two input model..........................
I think we know what happened to it, don't we. -
Which shop local to Brighton did you get it from?
GAK. They were good enough to get it on sale or return from whoever the UK Mesa distributors are. They don't normally keep them in stock although they do have some Mesa stuff. -
While we're on the subject, can you just stick steel flats on an acoustic bass guitar? I wouldn't really want that bright bronzey guitar sound, but I don't know if regular bass strings work on an acoustic bass.
I have Thomastik Jazz Flats on my acoustic. No problem but they are nickel not steel. -
That's metal band talk. They seem to have to pick weird tunings and then all tune the same to show solidarity or something. I don't understand why the bass player can't just leave it alone - more so if you have a 5 string.
+1 - but then I would never have anything to do with metal anyway.

Sold Mcgiver an Ashdown vinyl cover. Fast payer, great communication, recommended.
+1... I think every line I play, original or cover, has a bit of 'essence of WoT' in it.
+1 I think that's right. Even when it is someone else's line originally I still inevitably play it with some of my own feel (or lack of feel).
Sometimes our guitarist comes with a bass part in mind for one of his songs and if he does he's usually thought it through and it's a good idea so I play them. Strangely this is the first time in 20 years I've ever had anyone tell me what they want me to play, but fortunately it's someone who has musical talent. Phew!
That can make a difference.
good luck Dave, I am Hove based, where are you playing?
The Ranelagh in Kemptown - we were a bit all over the place, as was the PA. But I think we got away with it with the audience - just about anyway. The Walkabout sounded great.

I write my own basslines but I also borrow and steal bits from other people's basslines and make them my own. I also copy whole basslines when I want to or it's when necesssary to do so. I was once in a band where the bandleader (guitar and vocals) wrote all the parts - the bassline came written out as notation with a cassette of it played on guitar an octave up - sometimes she was a stickler for me doing exactly what she'd written other times I'd make suggestions for changes and she'd go with them. It was one of my most exciting and challenging musical experiences. If another band member suggests I do something in particular with the bassline, I listen to what they suggest and we discuss it and listen to it and come to a decision about what works best. For me, it's about what's best for the song and not about who wrote it. I'd rather play a great Jamerson line than a crap line of my own any day.

Congrats. I just got a new one but a 12". First gig with it tonight.
I think to play a "boutique/custom" bass you need to have earnt the right first. And by that I mean got to a good level of playing. I think I have got to a good level of playing but I still would be able to do what I do on a cheaper bass.
And who is going to decide who gets a licence to buy - will they have to earn that right too?
