1.
Hello all... I have been offered a rather splendid Squier precision, a 2005 version, at a great price. Anyone have one of these and how do they compare with the other Squire basses out there, like the affinity P -' s for instance. Any info greatly appreciated, as ever! Thanks.
They vary in quality. Which model is it?
 2. ... but never tune flat (or sharp).
 3.
Hi Ive just checked my intonation following this video: And found something a bit odd, and am wondering if anyone can shed a little light on whats happening, Im checking my 5 string ESP (Not LTD) Surveyor Bass and when i check the heavy B string and tune the harmonic then pluck the open note with my pick and it goes slightly sharp (just a couple of Cents and then comes to a solid B as the note rings out. So i presume thats ok and in tune. Then if i play the first fret © it goes sharp and the comes back to C after a second and this seems to be the case for any of the fretted notes, I play quite fast aggressive metal and im wondering if i should tune slightly flat so that the note i strike is in tune rather that the second after i play the fretted note, or am i just worrying too much? The reason this whole thing has come about is that when i play with my band something doesnt sound quite right, my guitarist insists that his guitar is in tune although im never going to really know for sure as he 's not that approachable to let me see myself. I just want to be 100% sure its not me thats the problem Thanks!
Sounds to me like you need the intonation properly set-up. There are plenty of examples online of how to do it. Try this one:
 4.
Fretted notes are always slightly sharp compared to open notes...
Sorry, but this is not correct. A fretted note can be flat or sharp depending upon the set-up of the intonation.
 5.
Joe Osborne I think its fair to say he is something of an unsung hero of bass....
Another good call ... and his (ex)signature bass has sold a few copies.
 6.
... Kenny Gradney (Little Feat) ...
Good call.
 7.
The answer to this question will remove a lot of stress from my life
... and why did you need to know?
 8.
According to Wikipedia it was a 6 string bass played by George. I'd take a guess that it'd be a Fender Bass VI as they were more available than the Rickenbacker 4005/6 or Gibson EB6
If it is Harrison then Fender Bass VI is likeliest, although he is in photos with a Burns Nusonic but they look slightly earlier than the White Album.
 9.
Why? Have you tried it? Could be a really good player
Could be a really good player, although I very much doubt that I would think so, but I still can't bear the way it looks. I like a Precision bass.
 10. I wouldn't want it even if it was free.
 11. Ian MacDonald's book Revolution in the Head has it as Harrison on bass, McCartney on piano, and Lennon on guitar. I don't know the truth of the matter.
 12.
The answer to this question will remove a lot of stress from my life
There are some rumours that the bass is George. If so it could be the Burns Nusonic or the Fender Bass VI.
 13. Quite like the Tele style, doubt I'd buy one though.
 14. Glad to see it back with you Delbert.
 15.
Glenn Cornick (Jethro Tull) was a big influence on me at one time. Another not much talked about name ( at least as far as his bass playing is concerned) is Peter Cetera. His work on the early "Chicago" albums is just amazing. While he is better known as a sax player, Wilton Felder ("Crusaders") doubled on bass on a lot of the early "Crusaders" albums. Anyone needing a lesson on how to hold down a groove, should have a listen. Granted these guys are not contempory players. However in their day they were among the best bassists, and I'm sure could still give the younger guys of today, a run for their money.
Wilton Felder is also the bassist on Jackson Five I Want You Back.
 16.
No one ever mentions the bass player from Blondie 'Nigel Harrison' who played on the original 70's hits. A very underated bassist. Not the original bassist though, that was Gary Valentine.
Off topic, but I really like Clem Burke's drumming too.
 17.
Ray Shulman - Gentle Giant.
I rarely listen to that 70s prog rock stuff butRay Shulman is a great player - 'progressive' (whatever that means) and funky at the same time.
 18.
If your moving on to flats for the first time try the GHS Brite flats....really great sounding strings, picked up the light gauge recently (45-98) they sound great on my MIJ '62 reissue P.. Ended up using them on the majority of an album session I was on at the weekend, you get the nice warm thump on the E but keep the brightness on the D and G...comes across very well indeed! D
Are Brite Flats groundwounds?
 19.
+1 to the above poster saying chromes are a bit brighter than most flats. Also Ernie Ball flats basically = Chromes as I believe D'Addario used to make EB strings and now EB have copied the formula! Could be wrong, but I like them!!
Fender strings are also now made by D'Addario - or so I believe.
Lots of different flavours out there - experiment!
I'm all for that but with flats it can be an expensive business.
 20.
A few seem of you seem to like Black Nylons. I've got Fender Taperwound on my SR400FL Fretless Black Nylon, Black Silks, Black bass with Black Hardware. Looks great with the PVC Gimp Mask. Looks aside, they sound pretty good too.
Sort of a stealth bass?
 21. TLA = Three Letter Acronym
 22. Welcome Niels. I was in Copenhagen over the summer too. Very nice city but the beer is too expensive.
 23. Very nice and I like the reversed headstock. Shame I've got no money or space.
 24. There's lots of flatwounds and they all have different qualities. So you're likely to get a list of people's preferences. At the moment, I use La Bella Deep Talkin 760FS on my fretted Precision for a Motown/Stax sound (FS are standard guage and high tension, for a little less tension you can try 760FL light guage). Thomastik Jazz Flats (JF344) are on my fretless precision for a slightly brighter and middier sound - these are much lower tension - and La Bella Deep Talkin 760N Black Nylons are on my Lakland Decade - these are roundwounds with a nylon tape winding on top. I'm less keen on D'Addario Chromes which are fairly tense and initially bright, nor the Roto Jazz flats for the same reason. The GHS Precision flats are I think the same as the Lakland flats which I also like. For a sixties British bass thud try Pyramid Golds.
 25.
Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Safari no difference, there I have made my tests. here things remain slow.
I've used IE, Firefox, and Chrome and all are very fast.
