Do precisions really work in any music?
EssentialTension replied to bassist_lewis's topic in Bass Guitars
I think it's possible to play one badly, with poor technique and get away with it (certainly as far as a non tehnical audience is concerned) whereas some basses would sound dreadful (and expose poor playing technique more obvioulsy).
That sounds like a Fender bass strength and not a weakness. So, which luthiers are making instruments that are difficult to play? -
I've heard it said many times, on here, in video reviews and by people I know, but can a one pick-up passive bass carry off any musical style? Opinions wanted for a quiet Sunday!
If you want it to do so then it can. However, if you don't want it to do so then it can't. -
And those coffee-table guitars are only bought by bell-ends.

I laughed at the bluntness of this, but just so you're aware, there are lots of members of Basschat who own these.
And are they the same members who think, for example, Fenders are damn ugly. Lots of members own those too. You can't have a thread like this without offending people. Indeed, the question asks us to say by which basses we are offended, FFS.
It's interesting that the Fender Bass VI didn't become the norm, I think had it been introduced a bit earlier than it could have become the standard as it would have encompassed a lot of what came naturally to guitar players of that era.
The Fender Bass VI was introduced about 1961 but the Danelectro 6-string Bass - with which the Fender was intended to compete - had been around since the mid-fifties. I'm guessing neither become the norm for bass parts because they didn't thump like a Precision (or some other 4-stringers). When it did get used it tended to be either for tic-tac bass or for more twangy guitar-styled work in, for example, surf bands or Glen Campbell's solo on Wichita Lineman.
All music recorded on a 4 string bass could just as easily have been played on a 5 string (or more) and a lot of it could have been recorded on 3 strings, so I'm not sure why that point keeps being raised.
Perhaps as a reminder that almost all of the time four strings (and very possibly fewer strings) is enough.
We should all be less judgemental and play the instrument that is appropriate and comfortable. Victor Wooten was asked why he always plays a 4 string bass on workshops. He said he owns and plays 5 6 and fretless when required, but plays the "cleaver stuff" on 4 strings because that's where he feels more comfortable.
Yes.
If 6 string bass had been the standard since the start I often think that the same could have been true of the ERB.
It certainly could have been said of whatever stringed bass was most common.

I've been in bands with people in personal relationships, including my own. It's not a problem if people know how behave professionally. -

bass equivilent to stairway to heaven
EssentialTension replied to sbrag's topic in General Discussion
If I do play a bass in a shop I almost never play songs. I play every note up and down each string and see how it sounds, acoustically first and then, maybe, plugged in. Try playing by the neck, playing by the bridge, etc. etc. but not songs usually. I'm checking out the bass not doing a gig. -

Very interesting. In the early 1980s I had a black 1970s Ripper that had been subject to an amateur defret rather like this one. I played it in a ska band. I've no recollection of what happened to it but wish I still had it.
