1.
Mention 'jazz' to people and, aside from a few who like it, the reactions seem to be very negative, some even hostile. People don't react like this to 'classical' music do they? So why is jazz the recipient of so much unfair stereotyping and derision? Or is it? Mention 'metal' or 'hip hop' to a lot of people and they might react similarly.
I am a teacher. I have some classical music playing while the class works. Female student says "I don't like this music". I say "Why not?". She says "Because it's jazz".
 2.
What I said .
Amen brother.
 3.
I think that's another myth, personally . Same as the one about classical players not being able to improvise....
It is definitely a myth. I've played with some and listened to lots of classically trained players who could improvise. Here's a classically trained musician (who I have not played with ) and he is improvising. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCa3iyBekCs
 4.
A lot of people who learn theory neglect the most important part - ear training. For example its all very well knowing that G -> C is a perfect cadence in C but if you cant "hear" what it sounds like in your mind then the knowledge is of little use.
That makes no sense. To know what a perfect cadence is I have to know what it sounds like. Anyway who are these people neglecting ear training while learning supposed theory. If there are such people then they aren't learning anything.
 5. Yes, ghost note or dead note: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_note
 6. Wouldn't a double sharp symbol go in front of the note rather than replacing the note head?
 7. Isn't it a ghost note?
 8.
... old oil cans ...
This is a frying pan:
 9. If you know what a root note is and you know what a chord is then it's not merely noodling - but there probably won't be any need for a theory book.
 10.
They really should make a bass with just a simple pick up, passive vol and tone (after all amps do everything else you need), a nice contour to rest your arm, and a neck with precise frets and easy to adjust pegs.
Hmmm, I might buy one of those.
 11. Whatever the next big thing is in bass guitar development, it's probably unlikely that I'll be buying one.
 12.
There are a few people on here who have lost gigs due to five string basses, lots of pro's have told me they keep a burst and tort P bass just for those gigs.
So, in those cases, was get a five-string bad advice?
 13.
And the flip side then, "proper bass players only play four strings, everything can be done on a four with a D tuner etc etc etc" it can't and I personally should have gone to five years earlier.
Actually, in my experience it's the other way around: "proper bass players only play five strings, everything can be done on a five without a D tuner etc etc etc" - no one has ever told me that I ought to play four strings.
 14. ... and... "You need to get a five-string."
 15. "Learning music, learning theory, learning to read will stop you being creative" - That was total b******s for one thing. and "Playing other people songs is a waste of time, play your own songs," - That was total b******s too.
 16. I'm against solos on almost all occasions by almost all instruaments. Instrumental section to the music is fine but solos or soloing over the rest of the band, no, it's boring. Solo allowed as long as it's no more than eight bars and is based around the melody line of the song. There will be exceptions which prove the rule.
 17.
I'm finding it useful when I want to strum some big chords - hitting the bass-cut switch stops it getting too muddy....
That was definitely one reason for the 'strangle'. The other reason was to get the tic-tac sound for doubling the upright bass.
 18. Gareth, this might interest you: http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=27464&sid=7b0c5708adb56ca4610e9ef517683d3d
 19.
Ok I got one of these today courtesy of ash (thanks very much and a very nice bloke to deal with ) but tell me what does the Bass-Cut "Strangle" Circuit do - it seems to make it more like a baritone in tone but boy does the volume drop when using this
The strangle circuit is a high pass filter and so you can expect some loss of overall volume associated with some loss of bottom end.
 20.
Hello people, where are you getting strings for your VI from? Sorry if this is a repeated question.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/La-Bella-767-6F-Fender-Light-Bass-VI-Flat-Wound-6-Strings-Set-26-95-Flatwound-/300978728012
 21.
Just put LaBella flats on, Whoa, hold me down!!!!!!!!!!!!! This bass makes the walls shake
Yep, that's it.
 22.
Same with Roto's Trubass too.
True enough, but the Rotos are bright golden yellow to the Pyramid bright golden orange
 23. Pretty good I'd say. I couldn't see any problem, contrivance or novelty with how they were dressed either.
