Headphone practice rigs? What are you using?
uncle psychosis replied to Bigwan's topic in Accessories and Misc
Bass to Hartke VXL Bass attack to a mixer. PC line out, also to mixer. Mixer out to the line in on the PC Mixer headphones to my ears. Lets me practice silently, play along to music on my pc, and record my practice sessions if I want to. -
So far I've just been playing around till I get the right sound I want just really wanted to kow a little more about it. My amp has middle, gain, low, high. Any help would be cool or even a link that would be sweet.
Gain, at the most basic level, is essentially just volume. But if you turn it up too much you'll get distortion (which may or may not be desirable). The middle, low, and high controls change the tone of the amp and are typically referred to as "EQ" (from "Equalisation"). A musical sound is made up of many different frequencies---typically from very low (the low B string on a 5-string bass is about 30Hz) to very high (several thousand Hz). You can modify the sound of your guitar by either boosting or cutting the level of different frequencies present. So, the low control allows you to increase/decrease the low frequencies, the high control allows you to increase/decrease the high frequencies, and the middle does the "middle" frequencies. How "low", "middle", and "high" are defined varies from amp to amp (on a graphic EQ typically the ranges are labelled) but they all do much the same thing. The best way to work out how EQ works is to use your ears. Turn all three to the middle of their range. Listen to how the bass sounds. Then turn the bass control right down and listen to what happens. Then turn it right up and listen. Listen to some points in between. Then, put it back to the middle position and repeat for the other two controls. Its interesting to note that EQing is not an exact science. What works in your house or the recording studio might not work on stage or when playing with a band. You just have to use your ears :-)

Hardest thing i've ever had to do on bass
uncle psychosis replied to Chrismanbass's topic in General Discussion
I used to play the flute (well, I guess I still do but I don't play regularly anymore). When I was a teenager, I played in a big band and for one gig we were doing a suite of music written specially for the band. In one of the pieces, there was a really tricky two bar passage in the flute part. When he was handing out the music, the composer spoke to me and said "yeah, look out for this part, its quite tricky, but I showed it to one of the flautists in the RSNO* and she said it was just about playable..." Needless to say it took me a few attempts to get even close to nailing it... *Royal Scottish National Orchestra -
if this were Ebay i think i would get my cash back no problem
Not after a year you wouldn't ;-)
-
Sounds like you're both at fault from where I'm sitting. SidV shouldn't have described it as "new", because it wasn't. "as new" would have been wiser. Slobluesine should never have expected an item sold in a private sale via a forum to 1. Actually *be* new 2. Come with a warranty beyond "it should work when you get it" or 3. Be returnable a year later. Getting away from this situation for a second, the tendency of people to say things in the classifieds like "I bought this last month, but its not for me, so seeing as its basically new I want 90% of the new price for it" really gets my goat. Things can only be new once. Once something has been bought from a shop it is second hand, regardless of condition or age.

The shimverb looks awesome, has anyone got any clips of the shimmer mode?

Lovely Fender Bassman

Since I play guitar and bass I've always lusted after a bassman....mmm.... -
Earlier this evening I visited a couple (my ex-wife and her hubby) who are both talented musicians (sax and piano). Their 8-year-old daughter was eager to perform her skills for me on clarinet and piano. She played faultlessly. I asked her parents how long she had been playing. Apparently since September. I thought she might have put in around an hour a night to reach her standard of playing. No...5 to 10 mins a night.
Yeah, but thats 5-10 minutes a night in the presence of two talented musicians, added to a lifetime of living with two musicians. If I lived with my bass teacher I'm sure I would progress at a massive rate.

Keep my Wem Dominator or sell it?
uncle psychosis replied to Christophano's topic in General Discussion
Funds are tight? New baby? You sure you're not me? I bought a Hartke Bass Attack DI/Preamp. I use it for practising at home with headphones (through a mixer) but I can also use it to go straight to a PA. There are lots of similar solutions---Sansamp BDDI, Behringer BDI21, DHA vt1-eq-bass-drive, etc. If I were you I'd keep the WEM and get one of them. -
Yamaha TRB 1006 whats it like?
uncle psychosis replied to petercullenbassist's topic in Bass Guitars
I've got a trb 1005 and it's great. I'd second the comments that the preamp isn't the best, but it sounds great all the same. The neck is quite chunky, but I find it comfortable and I have small hands. I'd definitely recommend one. -
Thanks guys. Can't quite decide if I like them or not! Sounds good though!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPaBWxcnl30&feature=player_embedded#! Any ideas what this bass is? I don't recognise it. I think this is the same one, but in a different finish:

You should not have to work through pain to do your job, especially if you are in pain because of an accident at work. Employers are legally obliged to help you with this kind of thing---reduced duties and so on. Don't make it worse out of some crazy sense of "duty".

Have you been to see a physio? They might be able to give you some exercises to strengthen it. Unfortunately, quite often the only cure for this kind of thing is patience---you have to be prepared to rest it, and not use it even though you really want to. Otherwise you can risk making it worse. My friend had to have knee surgery and couldn't do any kind of sport for about 18 months. He hated every minute of it, but it means that now his knee is fully healed. If he'd get stressing it he would have done permanent damage.

Highway One Jazz on Glasgow Gumtree
uncle psychosis replied to uke's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Nice! If it weren't a sunburst, I'd find it hard not to drive to Glasgow today.
You could drive to Dalgety Bay and get a nice black Jazz... -
What should be in the box of a new Hartke??
uncle psychosis replied to Will Farnell-Smith's topic in Amps and Cabs
Sounds like its ex-demo and they've lost the box to me. Its not on (unless they advertise it as so and give a discount). For what its worth, I've always had good service from both GuitarGuitar Glasgow and Newcastle. -
Are very expensive pickups worth it?
uncle psychosis replied to Kesh's topic in Accessories and Misc
Depends. I think there is a lot of snake oil and placebo effect in action when it comes to pickups. For some people, its worth it---for others, not so much. For what its worth, I have a jazz bass with Wilkinson pickups and it sounds awesome. I also used to own a Japanese telecaster with Bareknuckle pickups. It also sounded awesome. My own personal bias is that for playing live---especially on bass---really expensive pickups aren't worth it. But others may disagree, and thats cool. -
IMO the music that you choose to play is just as important as your ability on your chosen instrument(s). As a band RHCP don't really do anything for me so while Flea may or may not be a fantastic bass player because I don't like the music he plays I find it hard to appreciate his playing. Also I'm a great believer in the importance of the song and the arrangement over the instrumental prowess of the individual musicians. To me if as a musician you are more noticed that the songs you are playing that means either the songs themselves are weak, or you are over-playing. Either way IMO you've failed as a musician.
My thoughts exactly. Flea is very good at what he does. I just don't really like it. He's really talented, but that doesn't mean I want to listen to him!

I had a DHA VT1-EQ-Bass-Drive and it was the dogs proverbials. Absolutely brilliant. I sold it, but only because it was total overkill for what I needed it to do. I can't help but feel Dave is missing a trick with his finishes. Functionwise, they are serious pieces of kit. Lookswise, they look like a DIY project. I had more than one soundguy question whether or not mine was going to damage his desk (they assumed it was something I'd thrown together myself). I can't help but wonder if some potential customers aren't put off because they don't look like a "proper" pedal?

Good stuff Basschat is awesome. For future reference, theres no way I'd ever send a postal order / bank transfer to some random on gumtree. I'm nervous enough about using those methods with people who I "know" through forums, never mind a total stranger!

Cheap classic vibe precision - easy to fix up
uncle psychosis replied to gjones's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Already mentioned here I think the listing might have changed. I'm sure it said before that the pups had been hammered in.
it did. I was going to bid but the sentence "the pickups have been literally hammered in" put me off somewhat! -
