Any fans of The Residents here?
uncle psychosis replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
My dad is really into The Residents and whilst I don't quite share his passion I do quite like them. Third Reich N Roll, The Commercial Album, and Meet The Residents are all good. Need to look out my Residents jumper, its a good antidote to all the Xmas jumpers doing the rounds! -
Look at me! Look at me! Look at me!
Quite amusing seeing a post bemoaning the egocentric and the attention seeking from someone desperately trolling a message board.
I think experience teaches you if the gig is worth a spare or not...
This. I rarely take a spare bass to a gig but I would if I thought it was one where the show needed to go on at all costs. Some gigs---mainly those that pay---need more failsafes than others. The majority of the time I'm happy knowing that I've got a well constructed instrument that I look after, batteries that have been changed before the gig (and spares too) alongside a couple of spare cables and some spare strings.

Using a music stand in a covers band
uncle psychosis replied to bonzodog's topic in General Discussion
I cant agree that its the difference between amateur and pro bands, I've seen FAR more pro level bands with stands.
Exactly. Michael Stipe from R.E.M. regularly had a music stand on stage with him to help him remember his more obscure lyrics. I reckon a career spanning 30 years and an estimated 85 million record sales counts as "professional". Never stopped him running around the stage or putting a great show on either. Being utterly reliant on it for an entire set is probably a no-no for a rock or pop act but having one there for discreet cheat sheets is absolutely fine. -
would a bad drummer make you quit a band? I just did :-(
So you're saying that it s OK to have a dodgy singer i.e. the person that is the focus of your audience. There's definitely something wrong with that.
No, he's not saying that its OK. Getting your wallet stolen is better than being stabbed, but I'd rather not do either -
Eh , excuse my ignorance but what's the best way to see what OBBM cables are all about?
http://www.rock-wire.uk.com/

My current pedalboard is only three pedals (including a tuner). Tuner, LS2, RAT.

would a bad drummer make you quit a band? I just did :-(
uncle psychosis replied to mrtcat's topic in General Discussion
I would attempt to resolve the issue, especially if you like everyone in the band and you all get on. However if I couldn't get it sorted out then I'd walk. If the drummer can't keep time then you have a real problem. It is natural to speed up a *bit* when playing, but it shouldn't be happening all the time and he should certainly be able to reign it in when required. I think it would be most tactful to present it to the band as a "band problem" rather than a drummer problem. It never ends particularly well when you single people out, even if it is their fault! -
85% of the replies to this thread will recommend getting them from OBBM who is a member here. His kit looks very good. Personally I get mine from Rob Davies at Kabl. Top quality components, very reasonable prices. http://www.kablonline.com/

Crackle when using compressor pedal
uncle psychosis replied to Jigster's topic in General Discussion
That sounds like it's just fairly standard interference. The compressor makes it worse, but it's not a problem with the compressor itself. Shielding the bass may help or even just moving around a bit to move the bass away from whatever is interfering. -
Why Don't Guys Care About Their Appearance?
uncle psychosis replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
Carry on, then with the continuum of stereotyping. It's obviously of great importance. A shame for those that don't quite fit the mould but, whatever, as long as fashion is conserved, all is well, eh..? Hmm...
Who said anything about stereotypes other than you? You made a bizarre claim that the intersection of image and music had been "left behind in the sixties", I pointed out the vast number of musical movements that prove that to be untrue. As for "not fitting the mould"---that term can be applied to most of the great pioneers of music. They create new genres and new styles because the old one doesn't apply to them. Bands don't need to have a particular image, but they need an image. -
Disclaimer: I'm an old hippy. Most of this crap was left behind in the '60s.
And the hippy movement didn't have an image? As for left behind in the sixties, I give you prog rock, disco, 2tone, punk, new romanticism, goth, rave, heavy metal, hip hop etc etc etc etc. All styles that have emerged since the sixties and all with a strong visual image. Sure, how you dress doesn't change what you sound like. But that doesn't mean that what you look like doesn't change how people perceive you or that it isn't important. Anyone who is serious about "making it"---or even just making money or getting good gigs---as a musician who doesn't consider their image is making a massive mistake. If you're not too fussed about either of those aims then knock yourself out but don't be surprised when its musicians that look the part who get the parts. -
You've not bought much from Deutsche Grammophon lately, I'd guess.
I don't quite understand what point you're making. Regardless, classical music has a very strong image to it---its dominated by dinner jackets and suits for the gents, and dresses of some sort for the ladies. You won't find too many classical concerts where the conductor turns up in an iron maiden tshirt and some jeans from asda -
Why Don't Guys Care About Their Appearance?
When it comes to music, I have no interest in how pretty or styled the artist is, because I listen to music, I don't look at it.
# No, of course you don't. Thats why records don't have any artwork on them and why nobody has ever made a music video. Every single major musical movement of the last 60-odd years has had an image. Music intersects with art, fashion, photography and becomes part of something wider, it does not and it will not exist in isolation. The people who think "image isn't important" when it comes to making music are quite frankly kidding themselves on. -
Why Don't Guys Care About Their Appearance?
uncle psychosis replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
More bands need to make an effort with their appearance. No, scrub that, every band should make an effort with their appearance. I've had little success trying to convince others of this though! I generally do tend to think about what I'm going to wear on stage although so far I haven't really found my gigging "look". Its hard to do something that hasn't just been done a thousand times before or that suits (I'm not wearing a fedora in my rock band, for instance). -
There was an EBS multicomp offer in the Amazon Black Friday Week deals earlier today, £79.99 which seems like a very good deal indeed. Probably worth keeping an eye on Amazon for the rest of the week.
You could set to the louder setting during sound-check, then back off the volume knob to 'normal'..? When the need arises, turn up the wick. When no longer required, dial back to 'normal'. Hope this helps.
This, or an EQ pedal. Best way to do "clean" boost in my experience. Depends a lot on the amp though.

Another thing which can be really hard to nail and get right is dynamics. We did a gig a while back and one of the bands did rock covers---they were very tight and could all play but there was something not quite "right" about them. Finally it dawned on me that they were just the same volume level all the time. No dynamics, no light or shade to the songs---just bash through everything at the same level. It becomes really boring to listen to.

Anything with Nile Rodgers on guitar will almost certainly require the guitarist to absolutely nail the groove. Get Lucky is a particularly tough one because what sounds like a single guitar part is actually two guitars overdubbed. As well as being an absolute genius Nile can be a sneaky git when he wants

I reckon that even if Hiscox don't *make* a case specifically for a parker fly bass that they'd make one if you asked. Their customer service is impeccable. I sent them an email asking if it were possible to buy extra padding for a case and two days later an envelope popped through my door full of padding absolutely free of charge!
So Bill, sorry if this is a slight derail, if you wanted a Amp with the most volume "out front", what measurement would you be looking at? SPL?
Its actually very hard to correlate perceived volume with measurements. SPL is not a bad place to start but even then the relationship between SPL and loudness isn't a simple one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness

Hiscox definitely make a hard case for Parker Fly guitars. Dunno if they do a bass version.
ordered!
Lol, good work. I think you'll like it, I had one and it sounded good but I was only using it as a home practice tool so it fell by the wayside when I got a B3 and started messing around with more sounds. If I was a richer man I'd have kept it around for occasional live use.
