YOu're right about the SF head, but given the choice it's far better than the LG units.

Poor build quality and reliability make this 'seemingly-good-option-for-the-price' amplifier a loser! The input section is very weak and you need a bass with a very high output indeed or preamp to get the most of the power on offer. Seriously, the input section is awful. May do as a backup amp, but I wouldn't trust it as a main gigging head, mine died from new within a month of ownership and I'm a light amp user. The Superfly head is a much better unit and can be had for little money these days. For the price they fetch you could buy two, one as a main and one as backup!

What a great tune, though this isn't my favorite version, I like the original demo version of it from when Jaco was first starting out. What I love about Jaco's playing is his sense of timing, and the way he seems to leave masses of space and air in a groove, even if the groove is fast and tight - Jaco is the king of time in my opinion. I think most people don't understand this about his playing.

The Ibanez Promethean is a great little amp, and the fact that the head is removable like a Walkabout Scout makes it very versatile for me. There's also a nice gig bag for it, making it a nice all in one solution. If you're ever passing Blackburn you're welcome to try it out. Back to topic though... don't for the Acoustic Image range of combos... you may (not very likely mind) get an early one in that price bracket. If you had a grand to spend, theres a second had Mesa Scout at Bass Direct

Played the Ye Olde John O Gaunt in Lancaster town centre on Sunday night. A really nice quaint pub with a good live music scene. Not massively busy to be honest, but the crowd all stayed to watch us and all sang along which was great fun. A nice way to end a gig run, as we're having a band break while I get ready for the new baby arrival

I'm making the move to short scale after 20 years on the bigger boys. I find them just so much more comfortable to play, particularly over longer sets. Sound wise, there really isn't that much difference in newer models IMO, as modern preamps and modern string design can more than compensate for lower string tension etc. I have a Tanglewood TEB12 semi acoustic 30" bass. Tonally is very good and versatile, the only weak element being the E string which lacks definition compared to the other strings. But a bit of thoughtful playing gets around this. This is probably due to the strings I'm using more than anything else. I'm looking at a SX jazz bass next, and putting in a good preamp with good high tension strings should still deliver useable tone that most people would be hard pressed to tell the difference between it's 34" brother.

If you have an iPod have a look at Instantdrummer Heartbreaker: Cost about five quid and the sound quality and versatility is surprisingly good. A bit limited on different time signatures, but it is a real drummer sampled and the most people would be hard pressed to notice the difference
