1.
Good point. Hejira only has Jaco on Refuge of the Roads, Black Crow, Hejira and Coyote; other tracks with bass on (Song for Sharon, Furry Sings the Blues, Blue Motel Room) it's either Max Bennett or Chuck Domanico.
Yeah, that's true too. I must confess I don't really listen to Hejira. Mingus is a cracking album too.
2. I can't recommend the Ibanez Promethean enough. 500 watts of power on tap from a detachable head, all housed in 1x10 combo unit. Brilliant bit of kit. It would seem this might now be discontinued, but there's a copy available from RedSub that retails for £300! Reviews seem very positive indeed and it's comparable to the Promethean from all accounts. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/168416-another-promethean-clone/page__fromsearch__1 http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/RedSub-BT5110-500W-Bass-Amp/C61
3. It's interesting that many people always list the same Joni Mitchell albums featuring Jaco, but never (or very rarely) mentioned Don Jaun's Reckless Daughter. I think it's because Jaco doesn't play bass on all the tracks, and those tracks that don't feature Jaco don't have bass anyway, he plays percussion. For me, Don Juan has some of the best song writing and arranging on any album Joni has done. The subject matter, the way the music plays around the lyrics and singing, the orchestration.... it's all their. For me, Don Juan is a classic album that shouldn't be overlooked simply because Jaco doesn't play bass on all the tracks. I find the album more interesting because of it to be honest.
4. That drummer is brilliant! Anyone notice he goes more crazy when the guitarist is soloing? I think he's trying to upstage him
5. Do people still collect VHS video? Anyway, if they do, and you're one of them, there's a collection of music and film and TV VHS's up for grabs if you want them. I've taken some good pics so you can see what they are. Collection only for the job lot from Blackburn BB2 area. I'm not interested in breaking up the collection, so please don't ask. PM if you're interested. No postage.
6. Approximately 120 used Mojo magazines to go to a good home if you can be bothered to collect. The magazines come without any CD's etc. The collection starts with the odd two or three in the mid nineties, and then is pretty consistent through the 2000-2006 ish. These aren't mine but my partners, and since moving house she's decided she no longer wants them..... even though she had me put them into storage to begin with :/ Please don't ask for specific ones, as I simply can't say. There's two boxes full of them and they just need collecting and going to someone who may benefit from them. Seems a shame to simply bin them. Collection from Blackburn BB2 area only. No posting. PM if you're interested.
7. If you do buy new, chances are you'll spend a good deal of money on top of the cost of the new bass in order to get the bass playing how you want it to play. I think sometimes buyers of new basses often forget this (electric and acoustic). Not sure you will of course, but it's something to consider. This, as I'm sure you're aware can cost a small fortunate in itself. Also, you say you're teaching, I know it won't be a big issue, but a new bass will take time to get used too and could affect how you play for some time. Not much, but it's something to think about I guess. If it were me, I'd invest the time and patience to get your instrument back on track with a good repair job. There's no reason that if it's done well, it will last another 120+ years!
8.
There is meant to be a new documentary about him to be released next month . " Jaco " , directed by Stephen Kijak , and financed by Robert Trujillo ( of Metallica ) a lifelong fan . - Looking forward to that .....
Didn't Trijullo have something to do with Jaco's bass of doom being return when it was stolen?
9. Always be nice and always be punctual. Good manners get you a long way in this world
10. A great video, thanks for sharing. Love Jaco's playing (more so when he's playing solidly and not doing silly solos and his writing and arranging skills were superb. I have often wondered though, why do bassists who re-arrange and perform Jaco tunes, feel the need to nail his tone down all the time? I know that sounds like a silly question, but the Jaco big band albums done recently with guest bassists on them all sound like Jaco clones, rather than using their own voicing to play the tunes. Continuum would still be a great composition played on a fretted p-bass in the hands of a great musician, just as much as it is on a fretless. Is that too cynical?
11. Congrats! Nothing beats a new bass day, especially such a lovely one like that
12. Mark Bass do those velcro strap things to attach the cabinet handles that help hold basses in place. Not strictly a stand. Might work?
13. Hercules stands are excellent and come in a variety of configurations to suit your needs. http://www.herculess...itarstands.html I never leave home without mine. Good build quality, very secure and a reasonable price for the assurance of protecting your gear Whether though any of these fit your requirements for a gig bag fitting scenario I can't say. If you're that precious about the bass, it may be better to have a bigger stand and simply carry it. They're not that heavy and don't inconvenience that much.
14.
You've demonstrated your own point very well there! More Watts, by definition, does equal more power. The problem is that it is not straightforward to translate between power and volume, and it becomes even more complicated when you realise that some manufacturers quote RMS power whilst others quote Peak Power.
That's exactly the point I mean - power doesn't always equate to volume. That's what I was trying to say *honest*
15. I suspect many new bassists have all fallen into the trap of buying bigger and better amps all in the quest for more power, only to realise that it's not necessarily as simple as more watts equalling more power! Call me cynical, but I bet a few manufacturers use this misunderstanding to sell products to those who perhaps don't know better. I know that it's taken me a long time to get my head around stuff like this.
16. Just discovered Zu. Awesome is not a good enough word to describe just how awesome *ahem* they are http://youtu.be/KtS3QzBB_xA
17. If that bass was Meg from Family Guy http://youtu.be/RF985plzx_c
18. A bit of topic, but it always makes me smile
19. Here's a bass cabinet we could all enjoy
20. I personally don't make money from music as a career, but my friend who is a drummer does. All I can tell you is he works bloody hard at it everyday, with the main stay of his income coming from teaching. He then joins and plays with as many bands and musicians as he can, continually networking and looking opportunities. It's not really a 9-5 job for him, which I guess can be as stressful as it is rewarding. He is though a thoroughly nice and honest guy, and I think that helps in building up a good reputation that follows him around. Best of luck
21. An interesting thread with some great music. Not sure if some of it is all strictly flamenco mind. I say that because I got my head bitten off by someone once when I described a piece of music as being flamenco, when in fact it strictly wasn't. It just had that flamenco 'sound' which I'm guessing many of the examples here fall into that category, and many people associate with flamenco. True flamenco, if I understand it correctly, and I think I don't, is as much about attitude and an event, as it is a very technical musical tradition to master. It's very hard to describe in words is what I think I'm trying to say
22. I've always found PJB stuff to be very well matched for EUB's and piezo pickups even without a preamp - but that was just me. Of course, nit all PJB amps have an XLR in either. If you are going to use a preamp, it doesn't need to be too fancy. I had a simple Fishman B preamp that did the job very well without any real colouration to the tone. Had bass and treble on it, clipped to my belt and give a good signal to the amp to help get a good clean out through it. The EQ on the preamp was useful as I could dial in or take away basic tone without being over the amp during playing if required.
23. Derek Bailey & DJ Ninj. You can hear the whole album on Youtube http://youtu.be/HUgcKnwnTTE
24. Thumb's up for the Tom-meister! In fact I was wondering what to listen to this morning, and that post has solved that dilemma beautifully
