1. No. For the simple reason I have a DI box for such things should the worse happen. Also, what happens when your back up also fails, take one for that too? That of course is being pedantic . I suppose if you're in a band that does well paid gigs with loads of gigs and you have a van etc, then it's certainly worth it if it gives you peace of mind. But for a pub band, then no.

3. Holy moly! Great stick playing You can't beat really good stick playing. Too many players put way too much effects on theirs and it turns into mush. This track reminds me of a cross between Trey Gunn, Steve Vai and Laundry (a Tim Alexander project). In fact Laundry did release their album Blacktongue as a free download, but I now can't find it. There's some good stick playing on that album http://youtu.be/aQ0hcAKncyA
4. It's a funny thing slap bass for me. I am mightily impressed when someone can do it really well and have nothing but respect for players that can. Players like Wooten, Miller and Even Scott Whitley on here spring to mind. But it's a sound that grows tiresome on me quickly. There is only one player I can listen to all day slapping and do silly things on bass and that's Claypool. Probably because he does it in a way that's a bit different and odd ball. It's also a technique I've often thought I should learn but never have. I just don't play enough material that warrants that type of playing approach. If you can learn it, it's a good weapon in your playing arsenal for sure.
5. Well, some very kind person put together a rather good video montage on Youtube of our band Kiki Deville And The Cadillacs playing Beatherder http://youtu.be/2vuza5Ke9Rs The audio is from the performance of an original tune called Soul Man. The video doesn't strictly sync with what's going on, but it's still cool. Please ignore the dodgy bass break/solo
6. Played the Beatherder Festival on Saturday, and it was bloody EPIC!!!!! The weather was poo, but the whole crowd, vibe and banter of the day was just superb. The whole band played a blinding set with everyone enjoying themselves! To top it all off I got to see Orbital, Jazz Dub Sound System, Steve Hillage (sat next to him for lunch too) and the Wonderful Sound Of The Cinema Organ all for free. Good times
7. Jasper Hoiby Bjorn Meyer Charles Mingus Dan Bergland John Paul Jones Jaco Pastorius Charlie Hunter (technically a guitarist but plays his own bass lines on a seven stringer) Les Claypool Cliff Burton Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher)
8. My friend made a comment when he listened to it that this is more a paradox of overtones rather than fundamentals. Probably a lot easier to hear and judge if we we're listening to it using a pure sine wave instead.
9. Man that's bloody weird! I got descending, ascending, ascending, descending.... and then I listened again and again and again... and simply couldn't decide. I've now posted this to FB and all my muso friends so they can have a headache too
10. Things to take into account when using one of the iM2 mics, based on my experience of course. 1. Like all mics, it's prone to handling noise, so if you can mount the iPhone in some way it will help a lot. This is obviously true of the video too. I have an iPhone Glif Plus which costs very little and allows you to secure the iPhone to a camera tripod mount. http://photojojo.com...e-tripod-mount/ - It works well and is quite snug. There are other options too for this, but they might not allow you to connect the microphone. 2. Get a windjammer if you can. They sell cheap ones on eBay. 3. Because you're recording video, the mic will be turned 90º to how you would normally use it if recording audio. So you may or may not get the type of sound separation you're after as the capsules will be sitting one on top of the other instead of side by side. It's not been an issue for me mind. 4. Do some test recordings with it to get a good idea of input level and mark it on the mic with a marker etc, save you guessing each time if the input gets knocked. 5. The limiter works well, but can be quite harsh when the volume is cranked. Hope that helps
11. Tascam iM2 is a superb mic option for the iPhone and it works with the video too. The only real downside is because video recording doesn't have metering, it may be difficult to judge levels and clipping. This is an audio recording made with an iPhone 4 and the Tascam mic. Good quality for what it is http://snd.sc/LBH0hW
12.
B*gger. Every time I look at this thread I end up spending money.
It's soooooo worth it
13.
Just heard these guys, and they're fantastic. Very much on the gospel/funk end of the spectrum: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1cskIan5Jw
Agreed. Just got that very album and it's incredible. Killer playing and grooves all round
14.
Here's something I've just been introduced to. Tim Landers bass just sounds as good as it gets. It's all music of King Crimson played as a jazz trio.
Two great albums from that band, and the Crimson treatments into jazz are superb. Such a pity that Ian Wallace died during the recording of the last album
15.
"Much more civilised and proper" Well, half the time i don think TalkBass is full of 13 year olds, with all the arguments that happen on there. I mostly visit for comedic purposes than information any more. I find BC is a much better source, because the majority of the users on here aren't afraid to admit when they're wrong. Liam
I meant it terms of 'how' the words sounded, not what went on in there. So the term 'Talkbass' sounds authoritive, direct and self-important, whereas 'Basschat' sounds more civil, proper and a bit more laid back etc. I don't go on Basstalk at all anymore simply because I found it too childish and silly and bitchy...
16. America has Talkbass - somehow masculine in how it sounds. UK has Basschat - sounds much more civilised and proper. Which leads me on to 'All Hail The Chap' http://youtu.be/aUzTWJnHeDE
17. Played Darwen Live 2012 over the weekend, once at the library theatre and once at Number 39. The library theatre gig was a bit more reserved and I couldn't hear the keyboards at all for the first three songs. First song went a bit wrong as a result, but we pulled it back and everyone seemed to enjoy it. The second gig at Number 39 was such a blast. The place was rammed full, people were dancing and very drunk, and I was jumping around like a lunatic while playing! Good times
18.
Thanks. I am one of the few people left without a smartphone actually...and to add to my archaicness, the room I practise in has no internet, so no online thingys will do it for me. That said, I am due an upgrade in September so smartphones/apps are looming in the not-too-distant future.
It's amazing what you can get these days on a phone. My phone is a camera, organiser, field recorder, tuner and games machine. Quite incredible really...
19. John Mayer with Pino Palladino on bass. What a great bassist!
20. Got an iPhone or a good smart phone of some description? Loads of good tools that are super cheap on phones, cheaper than a drum machine. Guitartoolkit on the iPhone is fantastic, not sure if it's available on Android devices. Masses of different time signatures, tap tempo, tuner etc. All in a phone costing less than a quid with no need to program in beats. If you want some beats to groove to though, try Instantdrummer. I use these two a lot and it's a great way to get good beats down without programming and get some practice done.
21. Great group. I got their first album on a whim and it's fantastic, intrigued as I was by the hang drum player. They're an interesting group as the band is as much about the sound palette as it is the songs. Playing a hang drum in such a setting is obviously a challenge, as they (hang drums) have limited range in of themselves. So I think the compositions reflect this to some degree. To say though they have no groove or drive is utter drivel IMHO . Sure, the sound is quite soft in places, and a lot of compositions are slow and more ballad-like, but I can think of several compositions that drive along very nicely off several of their albums. This is as good a jazz group as any other, just a bit different sound pallet
22. Been a fan for a long time. Just great song writing, great singing and great playing. The first album is fantastic, not heard the new one though.
