1. All, This was a custom order from B Hefner (http://www.bhefner.com/) that I intended to fit to the Squire CV Precision for sale here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/156785-squire-classic-vibe-50s-precision/ Sadly a "misunderstanding" left me with a fretless neck with side position markers at the between fret positions. And that's not what I wanted. So here it is. Full spec is as follows: FINGERBOARD RADIUS: 12 FRET SIZE: NONE (FRETLESS) PROFILE / SHAPE: MODERN C TUNER HOLE SIZE: STANDARD 11/16" ORIENTATION: RIGHT HAND FRET QUANTITY: 20 FRETS BINDING: STANDARD (NONE) NECK FINISH: CLEAR GLOSS URETHANE FRETWORK: NONE NUT TYPE: COMPOSITE NUT TRUSS ROD: HEEL ADJUSTMENT INLAYS: BLACK DOT NECK WOOD: QUARTERSAWN MAPLE ORIENTATION: RIGHT HANDED (STANDARD) FINGERBOARD WOOD: MAPLE FRETLESS: NONE HEADSTOCK SHAPE: TELE BASS HEEL SHAPE: P-BASS ROUNDED STANDARD The neck is a lovely piece of work and I'm looking for £120 including shipping. 2. All, Despite my love of the way it looks this spends most of its time hanging on the wall. So it's up for grabs. I'm the second owner but it's still in pretty much showroom condition. It has a pickup cover added which looks great (but doesn't help the playability much) and I have the missing finger rest but can't for the life of me find the screws to attach it. These seem to be around the £320 mark new so the £225 I'm after is clearly a bargain. I'm happy to ship the bass at the buyers expense and risk (it'll be about £15 I should think) and i'll include a used but perfectly serviceable gig bag. Yamaha BEX4

OK, so here's the latest addition to the collection and one I've always fancied – a Yamaha BEX4 in blue. It was a good deal (£260) it's in great condition, sounds lovely and just needs some new strings and a setup (the action is very high so the neck needs shimming). But, and it's a BIG but. I hardly ever play fretted basses and I have an urge not just to de-fret the BEX4 but to get a lovely new unlined ebony fingerboard fitted. You see, not only do I dislike the look of de-fretted basses, all the dots are in the wrong places. The thing is though, there's a voice in my head telling me I really should have a fretted bass in the collection and the BEX4 should be the one. So, what would you do? Phil

Yamaha BEX4

All, I've always fancied a Yamaha BEX4 – I love the look and I'm a sucker for semi-acoustic basses – and I've come across one for sale for a reasonable price. So can anybody tell me if they sound/play as good as I think they look? Phil
5.
I sold this to Phil..I was disappointed with the p/ups which I believe Phil upgraded before shipping abroad..GAS all you like, just don't buy!!
Your memory is playing tricks Mick. I didn't change anything on the bass other than the setup. I got it playing pretty well with a nice low action – the combination of neck-tilt and truss rod adjustment rather fried my brain though. It went to a guy in France. Can't remember his name now but I Googled him at the time and he seemed reasonably well known on the French Jazz scene. He seemed very happy with the bass. It was a lovely, characterful instrument dripping with mojo, but not a patch on more contemporary versions of the semi-solid concept. Phil
6. Now that's an interesting and unusual Wal. Try joining and posting on the Wal basses Yahoo group (http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/walbassesnaturally/). Phil
7.
Thanks Phil, much appreciated. I'm keen on the shorter scale of the Mouse to be honest but didn't know about the Minotaur. Listening to the demo on the Veilette website though it sounds like a very different animal to the mouse (haha). Much more tightly focused sound and less of a db impersonator. Maybe the chambering in the mouse is what gives it its more airy upright sound? I will take a closer look at Veilette though, I do love the sound and flexibility of the semi-hollow piezo/mag Archtop model on the Bass Player video on youtube.
Forgot to say earlier...If of course you fancied a short scale Archtop/Minotaur hybrid, such a beast could be created. P

Clearly it can do the brighter, more focussed tones but certainly Joe's intention when designing it was to create something that inherently had a warm, woody vibe. Joe's also very accommodating and really enjoys matching the tonal characteristics of an instrument to a customer's requirements. So if somebody wanted a Minotaur that majored on warm and woody, that's what they'd get. Phil PS. Trying hard here not to write advertising copy!
9. There was one for sale here a few months ago. I know that 'cause I was the one doing the selling. It went abroad I'm afraid. Phil
10.
Ideally within striking distance of West Sussex. Fat chance I know but if you don't ask...! I've only heard good things about them but RA doesn't have an agent iin the UK and I'd like to try one if possible to help me decide whether or not to take the plunge. Suggestions for any comparable alternatives also welcome. Thanks
Yes, RA's lack of representation in the UK is somewhat frustrating 'cause he makes some lovely instruments. I enquired long ago why he didn't have a UK rep and his answer was simple – he can already sell more instrument than he can comfortably make and doesn't have much interest in expanding his business. Anyway, you're welcome to come to Brighton and have a go on my demo Veillette Paris (the blue one in my avatar) some time. Not a short scale instrument like the Mouse but not so many miles away in terms of concept. Joe Veillette makes the Minotaur model too (www.veilletteguitars.com/electric_bass_nylon.shtml), which is much closer to the RA Mouse in concept. Regards Phil
11. All, Once I had a real DB, I had a change of mind about putting a set of Obligato Orchestras on my NS CR4. So here they are, new, unused and £75 posted. Phil
12. Don't all bid at once... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hand-Made-Double-Bas...ht_12246wt_1066 P
13.
Finally cleared out enough gear to justify buying a Wal Mk1 - courtesy of Simon (0353203) - top fella by the way.. Here it is..
Congratulations Mick and welcome to the Wal club. Looks like you have a lovely instrument there. Now you just need a fretless one and your life will be complete. Phil
14. I've always used vodka! One advantage being that there tends to be a ready supply of the stuff when you turn up to a pub gig with the strings caked in rosin. P
15.
It looks like an Alembic, if it were made in Pakistan.
Nail on the head. Even the appalling pun in the name "Lowenherz" (spelling of "hertz" of course incorrect) makes me shudder. P
16. Well just 'cause I couldn't resist finding out I contacted Martin's to enquire about the starting price on their Hungarian made Concert Model: it's £5k + VAT Oh well. P
17. All, The continuing search for my first proper double bass (I've played an EUB for years) means occasionally following all sorts of obscure web links. I came across this the other day: http://www.thomasmartin.co.uk Be very wary if you are at all seduced by the idea of owning a serious DB. Some of the instruments here to my eyes define beauty. Unsurprisingly, they're all POA (which I suspect translates to, "if you need to ask, you can't afford). Phil
18. Lovely pics Gareth. Last two especially. Phil
19. Bump for a fabulous bit of UK bass history. If my memory serves me, Rob Green of Status fame learned some of his lutherie skills working at Shergold in the 70s. And I can't help but wonder if Pete Stevens and Ian Waller weren't a bit influenced by Shergold. The general body shape and pickup surrounds have something of Wal about them. Phil
20. A very long time ago the "jazz" trio I played with had a regular gig at bar in Portsmouth. It was so cold in there I sometimes used to play in fingerless gloves. It always amazed me that punters would sit and listen while freezing to death. Maybe they were actually frozen to their seats. Phil
21. Thanks for the thoughts guys. I'd not considered Gedo (who it appears are the source of all the "from Germany" double basses on Ebay) before and I'll be firing off an email to Pete Tyler. Phil
22. All My search for a good "previously enjoyed" entry level double bass (say £1200 max) is proving frustratingly fruitless so I'm staring to wonder about buying new. Seems to me, new at this kind of price means either one of these (along with a new set of strings and a set-up from a local luthier): http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_kontrabass_33_02.htm http://www.gear4music.com/Woodwind-Brass-S...Double-Bass/8UV So, who has any thoughts on either of these instruments, or alternative suggestions? Phil
23. Lovely bass but unfortunately a little bit beyond my budget. Phil PS. Seems to me, however hard you push, it's not going to fit in that wooden box.
24. What an extraordinary bass. And it's quite a lot of bass for £800. Thanks the lord it's not fretless (actually I don't much go for the gold hardware either). P
25.
Just going to have to hunt them down now then and see if they can help.
How about a Wal owner in Brighton? You're welcome to come and have a go on my fretless Mk 1. Just PM me. Phil
