However he knew his stuff on Stracocasters and would talk to me about how to date them from the number of scratch plate screws or the type of neck plate. He also had a stunning Swedish girlfriend at the time. Which was nice...

  9. I'm looking for a replacement for Gotch tuners (GB5) but they've stopped making them. Anyone any ideas where to get one?
  10. I think you'd be hard pressed to find many smaller venues with 10 separate aux feeds for you all to have your our mix. You may need to group people's feeds together and compromise.
  11. Persevere. It's worth it. It's great line to play once you've locked it in.
  12. As above. If it doesn't have to be nitro, find the Pantone colour number you are looking for (doing a search will find your match) and go to a supplier of spray cans. I have used Paints4U and they are very helpful.

  14. Is anyone able to say how good the midi out is while playing? Can you for instance, use it to trigger a sound module to play a piano sound?

  17. I couldn't stand on a stage for 2 hours and mime. Re Top of the Pops. I belive it was the Musician Union who required that who ever appeared on TotP had to be playing on the actual audio.. I did a few 3 hour 'dummy' seasons in the 80s where the band set up as if re-recording the track incase the MU turned up (doing in 3 hours what could take a week, yeah right) and then switching tapes ie a copy of the master, that got sent to the BBC.
  18. I bought one, and yes it's playable. But it's very light and the body wood is quite soft and dents easily. The hardware is ok ish. Couldn't really get a good action on it. It served its purpose of trying a fretless, but an upgrade would be quickly needed. But yes, it's ok for £130, but feels like £130.
  19. Ah, well then... I was doing sound for a live jazz/dub/funk/improv thing at a venue just off Caledonian Road in London back in the 90's (I forget its name now). This involved a lot of working the desk (echo, sweep eq etc). Head down I was really getting into it. 'A quick blast on the smoke machine will add a bit of atmosphere'... 10 minutes later I look up and the whole venue was just smoke! However, with the stage lighting, everything looked awesome, with just the silhouettes of the band and this heavy dub going on. It really added to the vibe. Me and the other guy on the desk just wet ourselves laughing.

  21. Thankfully not me, but I used to do the live sound for a band in the early 80's. Keyboard player had a Prophet 5 and occasionally on sound check it would just totally crap out and lose all presets/sounds. Which means he'd have to reload them all from a cassette. This took ages, and didn't always want to load. Closest he got was finally getting it to load 5 mins before they went on.

Back in 1986, I had the privilege of being the assistant engineer on a couple of sessions when he was the bass player (along with Ray Russell on guitar), full sessions with drummer, bass, guitar, strings, brass, recording for a well known singer. But this was before the Internet (and I was young!) and had no idea who these guys were. But I did know they were phenomenal players and marvelled at how they could read the dots. I recently went to The bass Gallery where they are selling his basses. Odd to think he probably played one of those at the time.
  23. We did an outdoor street gig a few years ago, set up under a gazebo, on the driveway /pavement. Fairly tight for space. Guitarest had his Les Paul on it's stand behind where he'll be playing. Normal stuff, although not really out of harms way. But as we were still setting up, people were moving around, plugging things in etc. As the drummer is getting in behind his kit, he knocks over the Les Paul which falls onto the pavement at such an angle that the headstock breaks off at that weak joint particular to Les Pauls. We're all good friends, so no fights break out, but the drummer is understandably mortified and there's an odd vibe in the air Thankfully he had his Strat with him, so the gig went ahead, but he had a terrible gig as the 2 guitars are so different. So yes, I take a spare bass to gigs, even if it's left in the car. And the bass stays in the gig bag untill we start sound checking.
