1.
He builds amazing instruments...
Not as much these days judging by his website! He rather grumpily lists a string of things he won't do, which seems to include building instruments to order these days. Seems you now have to hang around and buy whatever he decides to make, whenever that might be. Shame, I'd really like a '57 P relic in the not too distant, and I'd rather not go Custom Shop if I can help it.
2. Hi guys! Rich, my good friend and Drummer from my side-project guilty pleasure, 90's grunge, (my mrs calls it the 'dad band') cover band Firehawk (intentionally bad name) has arranged a music festival called Flynnfest for this Saturday at the Britannia Inn in Par. Firehawk are closing the show, but the band scheduled right before us have pulled out and left him up the proverbial creek without a paddle. We are desperately trying to find a replacement band to fill this slot- and have got very close before being let down again. We are scouring the local music scene to try and find a band to play for an hour for this great charity event, in memory of Rich's son who was unfortunately still born in late 2011, with all proceeds going to Local charity Ella's memory. If you are in a band, or know of anybody who may be able to play for an hour, 8 til 9ish, just out of the kindness of their heart (and maybe some Tribute) to support this great event, then please get in touch. Full PA comes courtesy of local sound legend John Cornfield from Sawmills studios, big Marquee by the pub itself, there will be a drumkit, and you are free to use my bass amp and head. It's already received local media coverage so turnout should be good, and there should be some photo's taken from the local papers on the day. Please send me a message if you can help!
3. I have, the Fender Original had deeper lows, and more grind, the SPB-1 more pointed towards low-mids. To my ears anyway!
4. Stunning colour! C'mon fender, get these colours in the Road Worn series! Surf/seafoam/sonic/Daphne/
5. you're selling the wrong one
6. Bargain. Gassing for the sonic blue again
7. Looks like a Jagstang
8. I used a power sander, but go carefully. I did manage to sand a few angles in to the body, which then had to be flattened back out by hand.
9.
I'd really like a Road Worn Fender but the current colours arn't top of my favorite list. How often do Fender release new colours ? A roadworn Sonic Blue, LPB, Burgandy Mist....now you're talking. Same for the CV Squiers, the PINO red is not my bag...bring back the Sonic Blue please!
I really wanted a Surf Green Road Worn P bass so I made my own. Vaguely copied the wear on my fiesta red 'real' road worn P, after spraying nitro and tinted lacquer. The tinted lacquer didn't look right on surf green, made it look almost olive, so I sanded most of it off when flattening the finish, and just left a few patches here and there to add to the aged look. Took a few matches to the white scratch plate to yellow that in areas, sanded the fretboard here and there, etc etc, and stuck my original road worn tuners on it (as I had to put res-0-lites on the RW as the body is so damn light it was neck heavy) and hey presto. I think I did a good job, I'll post pics when I get a sec.
10. Just picked up an RS212 on here. First impressions are very, very good. This thing wallops!
11. Did a gig inside someone's living room with one of these once. Sounded quite good.
12. No Use For A Name- should've made the list.
13. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAOxCqSxRD0 I can't help but think of this when I listen to their first album.
14. Bought a pair of wizard thumpers from Dave, brilliant!
15. Bought Matt's TCRS212. Arrived promptly and exactly as he said. No probs doing business here!
16.
13 mins, you can tell there`s a recession
Unfortunately the sarcasm is premature- still available! That recession must be hanging around.
17. Hi Guys, Up for grabs is my Barefaced Compact. It is the vintage cloth grille type, and comes with a roqsolid fitted cover. I would rate condition at 9/10. It has been gigged, but not hard, and has lived in it's cover since I bought it. It is approximately 7-8 months old, and has been used on average once a week for rehearsals or gigs. It's never been pushed hard- I go through FOH for all gigs, so is just used for stage volume really. My Orange Bass Terror has never been north of halfway on volume ever! I'm not going to bang on about these cabs, you should know what they can do if you are reading this. If you don't, then search the forum! Loads of reviews and info. I believe the current waiting time is around 3 months for these. I had to wait over 4 months for mine to arrive. I'm not completely sure how I should price it, but there is a Midget for sale on here for £500 delivered, so I'll place mine the same. The price includes insured delivery to any mainland UK address. Pictures to follow, or i can email directly. I'm not looking for trade deals, so please don't offer me a Roadworn P or J, or a G&L L200 Tribute with a maple neck, or I'll end up being castrated by the missus. Thanks Oh cab is located in St Austell, if anyone wants to look with their hands. Come round and kick the tyres!
18.
We don't take then generally, so only for friends or friends of friends really and local and they MUST have seen us before as we play what we play... Since they are friends, we might throw in Sex on Fire or Brown eyed girl if specifically asked for.. but other than that, we don't do requests. Last time we did BEG, if was the 1st dance.. If the price puts them off..then money is THE issue and so we want to steer clear anyway. We've found, amongst the local guys who do these sort of things, that £1600 plus for a wedding are the bookings that have dropped off these last few years. As long as the band is more than half decent, then £1000 is easiy achievable for little more than an early set-up. That is why we want to be local.. so we set up, go home and come back. You learn to cost all of these things in after a while.
Ha! Yeah what is it about brides and grooms that make them request weird songs, that you would never normally do? They've seen us play, they really like what we do, but they still request we learn The Final Countdown... Actually that was one of the ones that worked out ok! Cheers guys, looks like we've been selling ourselves well short.
19.
You need people to ask you to play their weddings,. Anyone wanting to pay £500 for the band is unlikely to be the sort of wedding you'll want to do.,.. but bands are only worth what the market will bear.... You could try a few wedding showcases to see it your show gets the interest.... but weddings need a good fee as you aren't likely to be able to roll up at 7pm..
People do ask for us. Specifically. And we still ask £500. No wonder we've done so many weddings...
20.
I sympathise with you, although when I mentioned a similar thing a while ago I was slammed for daring to suggest that musicians play for anything other than the love of music! Apparently I've been told, most bass players are independently wealth and/or have fantastically well paid careers that allow them to indulge themselves playing in a band as an amusing hobby, and the concept that some need payment is vulgar!
Just not making a loss would suffice!
21. Hi Guys, Wanted to know roughly how much you guys charge for weddings? We usually go out and do pub gigs for £250- £280 (£300 on occasion). For weddings we charge £500. Now, we've been offered weddings at short notice in the past from other bands and they are always better paid than we charge. At least £750 and sometimes £1000. However, when we mention £500 as our standard fee, it usually sends bridezilla into a sideways spin, and takes a few days for her to recover, catch her breath, and confirm. I like to think we're good at what we do- we're definitely well rehearsed and it's good sh*t-kicking folk rock, which always goes down a storm, so we more than justify the £500 in my mind- but should we charge a bit more? On a personal note, weddings are some of the worst gigs I've ever played. We've had some corkers, enough drink to keep everyone happy, a nice small room or marquee so it feels really busy, lots of energy coming back, everyone going mental, etc. Unfortunately at least half the weddings i've played have been terrible. Booked in a room big enough to comfortably seat the entire population of Luxembourg- but they've only invited 65. They laid on some cheap wine over reception so the bar isn't free- the buffet (which they abruptly accosted your mic to introduce during the beginning of the second set) consists of tuna sandwiches, dry sponge cake, and miniature cornish pasties, and the expensive hotel they've chosen is charging £4 a pint. And the band are not even given a free round. Trying to play upbeat folk rock to these crowds is like trying to enjoy ironing your face.
