To answer your question- Busking! I'm in a regular pub/function band (more pub than function), probably do on average 3-4 gigs a month over the year, more in summer thanks to festivals etc which always pay better too. I think to really do it as a profession, you need to be in a couple of solid covers bands, plus go out on your own (or with a partner) as a mid-week acoustic act, with an emphasis on private functions over your regular pub gigs. 3 gigs a week minimum. Even then, you'd probably need to busk to get by. Don't think trying to 'make it' will earn you any more money. Unless you want to play in front of 4 people all night and then be paid half the bar takings as your gig fee. I was going to ask- how much do you guys charge for weddings? but I think I'll start by own thread.
I've owned only one AWFUL bass and that was an Epiphone EB-3 - I hated it the minute I picked it up, which raises the question why I bought it in the first place. I have no idea, literally none.
Epiphone EB-0 sh*te. And plywood!

NOT an Audi A3 Sportback. Can't get anything in the bleddy thing. Had a 5-door Toyota RAV4 before and it worked really well- boot is level with you so you don't need to lift up-and-out, just out. Funnily enough, just put a deposit down on another one. Anyone want to buy a A3 Sportback? £3000

As stated above a simple change of valves will sort the grind issues out. I switched to Phillips ECC81's and was fairly happy. Needs to be driven to break up now, which is the way it should be. It also sorted out some of the boominess that I felt the original valves gave it. More of a clean punch than just air being moved. I really couldn't believe Orange brought out a 100w version. The 500w is so loud! With the original valves and a 4ohm cab I could not put the volume or tone above 9 o clock. What would you do with 1000w?

Just make sure you can see a sliver of daylight between the string and the 8th fret (when fretting at 1st and last frets). If you're like me, you'll want as little a sliver as possible!

That is the best feature of the Vox Amplug, the ability to plug in your iPod to the aux and play along to tracks.
-
I'm fairly happy with the VoxAmplug, but you do need to use good headphones, and be careful with the gain or else it can sound boomy. I use the sennheiser HD201 which seem to work good. Better (and cheaper!) than the HD205's I had before.

Another welcome from up Snozzle! It's great around these parts. I can see the only high-rise block of flats in Cornwall from my house. Oh and if you decide you could live with a barefaced compact over a super12 then I will have one available shortly!

Got a few part worn sets and some brand new odd strings. Happy to donate.
Try a bass drum instead of a kick drum.
In an instrument capacity yes, but not when referring to live sound

Thanks for the advice, guys, I will certainly try some of your suggestions. To be clear though, I usually do experiment with mic positioning, but end up with the mic just inside the port, aimed more-or-less at the beater. The drum 'appears' to be well tuned, but this is certainly something worth thinking about, as is the dampening method. I have though managed to go from an 'eek that sounds terrible', to a nice, tight punchy bass drum by fiddling with the EQ so I do know it's in there somewhere.
-
Acoustically the kick sounds very nice, it's got all the thwack I want, but getting that through the PA does seem like guesswork. Sometimes I get it, others I spend ages fiddling and still don't. Just to be clear, when describing where to set the mids, I have a mid level and mid sweep. Are you guys suggesting I pull back on the mid level for the scooped sound, and keep the sweep somewhere in the middle of the range?
-
Yep it has a low-cut, thanks for the advice, I'll give it a try!

Hi guys, Apologies if this is in the wrong section. We run 2 JBL EON subs, and two SRM 450 tops. The kick is mic'ed with a AKG D112, located just inside the port hole. Desk is a Soundcraft Spirit Folio F1 with 4 band EQ for each channel (low, mid, mid sweep, high). Wanted some advice on how best I should EQ the kick, as I'd like to take the guess work out of it! We don't always have the time to listen intently to each instrument when sound checking, and it's usually a case of close-enough, as we know once we start playing and the venue fills up the sound will change anyway, and the desk is always on stage, with no-one out front to 'fly the desk' and adjust as we go. The sound I want is a tight, in your chest thump, as our folky-rocky beer music drives along quite hard, and the kick is a big part of it. Something I've personally noticed, is that if I boost the low too much, the kick sounds bouncy, like a beach ball. The lowest adjustment on the mid sweep is 240hz, which I usually keep rolled right back, and keep the mid level quite high, however when experimenting recently it actually sounded better with the mid sweep all the way up? I know it's going to change with each venue, but looking for a rough guide if possible. If I have to buy a rack-mount EQ then so be it. PS:Our new drummer insists on using a pillow in his kick drum- good or bad?
However, in the real world the SWA1501 would just laugh at it. It is not a stadium filling box. It does what it does well, but that does not include 50Hz @ 140dB.
I wonder if we could run this alongside the SWA1501 though? With SRM450 tops. We're in need of another SWA really, but at this price I wonder if it could do a job for us?

Thanks for the help guys. Sounds like a sansamp pedal of some description could be worth looking at. With the barefaced, the OTB has lost some of it's 'fatness', so based on what you guys have said, I have dug out my old Hartke Bass Attack preamp/DI pedal to use with it. I've also replaced the Phillips ecc81's I'd put in with the original cheap 83's. This seems to have helped a lot, but I'm going to dry and demo some of the gear suggested with my cab when I get the chance, as there is still something about that Ampeg tone that is sooo right...
You want an Ampeg sound and your kit doesn't do it... but then you also say your kit says it does exactly what you want it to do...?? make up your mind..
Dude stop putting words in my mouth! I'm happy with my gear, it does do exactly what I want, but I've been bitten by the GAS monster after hearing the Ampeg tone! Have you never experienced GAS? Never played a Precision your whole life and suddenly fancied a Stingray after hearing one live? I'm not so committed to the idea that I'm going to sell everything and start again, but I may try and test out a head, say the PF500, like I mentioned, and see if I like it, based on people's opinions on here of course.
This is a muddle... none of the stuff seems to do what you want it to do... so you are fixing a fix. Sell it all and start again.
Eh? I don't know how you came to that conclusion. I love my current set up and it does exactly what I want it to do- sure the Compact has taken a bit of getting used to with the OTB, (If you think the EQ on an OTB doesn't do anything, try it with a Barefaced!), but it has opened up a definition I never had before. This is more about Ampeg GAS after hearing the Ampeg tone again, so am (possibly) looking for a head that can give me that in a small package, for a modest price. Having said that, maybe the cab is as crucial to achieving this as the head.
