1. I have one DB in repair at the moment so really didn't need to strip the endpin bolt on the other at a gig the other night. I thought I'd fixed it with a slightly larger bolt, but that turned out to not be the case. So, I need to but the circular sleeve and bolt. All I can find online are things like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...IT#ht_500wt_764 which I don't really want to get into as I will have to install a whole assembly that isn't needed. Essentially all I need is the brass sleeve and bolt/screw in the link above; any ideas as to where I can get one online and fast? C
 2. Come on guys, stop messing about, this is a major bargain. Jay's a top guy to deal with and I would be sorely tempted to go for this if it wasn't for my strong dislike of Jazz Basses generally! Having said that, if I was going to have a Jazz, this colour scheme would be the one; imagine what that baby looks like with shiny chrome PUP and bridge covers? You don't need to play it, you just hang it on the wall, or have it on a stand behind you on stage whilst you hold it all together with your Precision
 3.
Thanks for the advice guys, sadly the 4004's current price tag wouldn't be an option! Sorry to sound like a complete moron, but what would getting the pickups rewound do exactly. I don't quite understand what that would be, is it a job most guitar tech's can do, any idea how much it would cost. And any advice on an EQ setting for the bass, and amp to get the Ric sounding better? Thanks again.
A rewind is the last option as unless you really know what you're doing, you could end up liking the tone even less. I would play around with PUP height and EQ, and really listen hard and ask you band mates to do the same. It's hard to know what to suggest re EQ as your rig, your preferred sound and your ears will be different to everyone else's. Having said that, I had an old Precision that I never realised was, for whatever reason, really weak sounding on the A-string. I used to have to dig in on the A to get the tone the same. as the other strings This became so automatic that when I played other basses, note on the A-string were always punching through. The point I'm making is that a whole host of things can influence PUP-string balance other than the PUPs. Perhaps get it to a tech, or even another experienced player, and see what they think also. Good luck either way.
 4.
Any variance you hear are your ears playing tricks
Alex, you know your stuff and it's a brave man who challenges you ion this domain, but surely you're confusing physics and psychoacoustics there? When you say 'the ears playing tricks', are you not really talking of how the brain perceives and represents sound, in which case JT's points could be valid?
 5.
I love these threads too, you guys make me laugh. Even if you are right.

Americans like everything BIG, I think my thread will get a more positive response on TB

I posted on TalkBass and it's official... UTTER TOSH indeed. Hope everyone had a nice time venting. Yours, Phil. Maybe I should change my sig!
LOL, nicely taken on the chin mate. I must admit, I prefer heavy gear, but know so little about what makes gear good I simply leave it at that
 6. We've picked up a regular bar gig for which we're using DB, slide electric gtr, acoustic guitar and congas*. Although he's tried hard, our current drummer isn't really a percussion kinda guy, so we're looking for a percussionist to fill those gigs (all paying), and ideally to play alongside the drummer at bigger venues. Sound-wise we sit in an awkward place between Little Feet, Tom Waits and Neil Young, although we're hoping a good percussionist will take us more towards the former. We have our own percussion so own gear and transport aren't necessarily an issue (although you'd kinda hope a decent played would have his own gear, I guess we might find one who doesn't or tempt someone out of retirement)? Assuming the chances of me finding a percussionist on a bass forum are , can anyone recommend any good forums on which I could advertise the post also? Cheers C *PS congas really mess with the DB sound, anyone else found that?
 7.
I once worked a gig with a piano player who only played in C but changed the tuning on his keyboard for every song. Needless to say, I didn't play with him twice.
I had the same experience at a pickup gig a few years back. Horrible. He would also occasionally decide mid-song "OK, let's go up to B", which for him meant pressing one button once, but for me, playing fretless, meant all of my open tuning intonation checks had to be rethought on the hoof. Keyboard players eh! Re tuning generally, I don't use a tuner. Like Bilbo, I play DB or fretless. No point having them in tune, just shows up your bad intonation even more!
 8. Welcome Pete, good to bump into you the other night (I was the idiot who spent twenty minutes trying to parallel park in a space about the same length as my car outside the pub you were gigging in), and apologies for not making it back to your gig, for which you can blame football on tele! I suspect that our paths will cross at some stage as you live about 3 mins walk from me, but please keep me posted on your gigs Cheers Chris
 9.
I read this as FS/SX precision 3tsb £2500. Couldnt work out why it was so expensive. Nice bass.
LOL, yep, see what you mean, revised
 10.
Hi It's a standard Jazz so the neck is 1.5'' wide at the nut. The serial number is Z4167846. Also I've just weighed the bass and it's a touch over nine pounds. Cheers
Jay, that's a stupidly low price mate, behave, I've seen MIJ's fetch more!
 11.
Its always a shock to see photos of the bed you've just got out of plastered all over the internet A great bass at a great price ! Cheers, Si
Thanks Si A nice PX deal is potentially on with this, but we've agreed to hold off a few days as I really should be looking for cash only given a few other non-bass things I have to spend it on. I have had temptation put in my way, and a cash buyer in the next few days would likely reduce my feeling of guilt and shame C
 12.
Assuming the bass has it's original bridge, I find it's right to 'bump' it up to the bridge itself and check it's centred.
I was just about to say Bass Doc will be along in a second!
 13.
+1 to that IMO, though having a low action is easier to play, the trade off is that the tone is better when the action is that bit higher.
Yep
 14. Thanks chaps. it's never good to be selling a nice old Precision, kinda goes against the grain really (like supporting Arsenal I guess). Needs must and all that. Jase, haven't been to see your inlaws in Faversham for a while have you mate. Perhaps it's about time you did....?
 15.
As he has placed the ad in way to get around fee's he has broken the contract with EBay anyway. I don't think you would get the guitar but he would loose his account if he persists. I think it will get pulled. Blademan
Yep, the sort of guy who lists like that doesn't accept losing the bass
 16. Up for sale is my August ‘65 Precision, late L-series (and still considered pre-CBS by most aficionados despite being several months after the change of ownership). It’s a reluctant sale blah blah blah, but I haven’t gigged electric bass for 11 months now, and having picked up a few things here and there on DB, that seems to be the way I’m going at present. My main electric at present is a Squier Modified Jaguar with which I'm surprisingly happy The bass is not all original, but still wearing its original finish on both neck and body, it has the potential to be un-modified back to an authentic (if not entirely original) ’65 if you have the time, the inclination and the cash to do so. Original parts Body Neck Bridge PUP cover Bridge cover Pickguard (not originally from this bass but an original Fender mid-60’s nitro model that is period correct) Neck plate Strap buttons String tree After-market parts PUP (SD Antiquity) Tuners (at present some very old potentially Fender stock period reverse tuners but I will replace these with Fender ’62 MIA RI reverse tuners unless the buyer specifically wants those currently on the bass). Harness/circuit I bought the bass from Simon Clifton last year. It met all my needs as a player and Fender obsessive; that is, the paintwork was original, meaning it both feels and looks (and smells) old and worn-in. The wear suggests it’s been played by the same player for some period of time (or for a short period of time by a guy with a very heavy right thumb). The board is a beautiful dark rosewood (one of the pics below compares it with my old LPB '64 which had the darkest board I've seen to date on a Precision). The neck is very fast for a classic C width; enough of the varnish on the back of the neck has worn away for it to feel smooth and easy without it feeling lumpy and sticky (Simon will confirm that I am a neck obsessive and spent some time fussing about this when playing my way through his pre-CBS collection). Anyway, I think £2500 is a fair price, and I guess this represents entry level into the pre-CBS Precision market. My original plan was to source a ’65 PUP, harness and tuners (total around £600 if you hunt around a bit on ebay.com), and put the bass back to stock, if not to all original, condition. For various reasons however I’ve decided not to. Recognising the current cash situation, I’ll also consider PX deals with a decent Fender (please don’t suggest Sadowskys, Celinders, EBs etc, all great basses but I’m not really interested at present). Pics are below. These are Simon’s originals which I’m sure he won’t mind my using. Please note that the pickguard in these was I believe a ’62 RI model. The bass is now wearing the original Fender ’60s nitro tort guard mentioned above, which to my eye looks far better but which is also not in quite such good condition (and has also shrunk slightly, but that’s true for about 90% of the guards from this era). I can’t post this I’m afraid, but I’m willing to drive some way to hand it over, or for you to collect from Canterbury. After a couple of not so pleasing experiences on BC with people who I didn’t know before I entered into the deal, if you’re not someone I’ve dealt with before or know by reputation, I’ll need a down payment by Paypal before setting out to deliver the bass. Please shout if you’d like further info, I can also take more pics if needs be. Please let me know if I've forgotten to mention anything above, I can honestly (and somewhat surprisingly) state that it's quite a long time since I sold a bass on here! 20.
For sale is a set of Lollar P/J (4 string) pickups. They're in superb condition but I am going back to Fralins. RWRP for hum-bucking operation when combined with the Neck pickup. Alnico 5 magnets. I've got a Wizard matched PJ set and cash; new ultra-rare nickel Badass II in wrapping & cash; Mrs Beedster, possibly with cash? C
 21.
What about a rental company chaps?
Funny you should say that...... One word, damage and theft. That's two words (rather Pythonesque "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition" though).
 22.
I suggested this for a few Kent faces. I still think the idea has legs..!!
Good idea, but I don't want all my gear coming back painted like a chess board JT
