The baffle is definitely glued. I’m going to glue in the bracing and a strip to block the slot port after I’ve cut the various holes and sanded the existing paint off, because there’s no point sanding the bits that I’m going to cut out anyway! Good point about rear porting - space for the port on the baffle isn’t an issue but it would mean I could stop worrying about whether to try and paint the port tube. I guess it would also improve the rigidity of the baffle? It wouldn’t have the grille to keep lost objects and mice out though.

That's neat but I'd want to check what the current draw actually is - what counts as 'very low power consumption' might be a bit different between a model boat that runs for a few hours on a rechargeable pack and a bass that you expect to last for months on a PP3. Genius! With the added bonus that it would also cut out if you started pulling any of that neck-in-the-air rock star posturing 😄

Right… My first task has been to scrape, dissolve and sand off enough of the bituminised felt gunk from the rear panel to bare wood so that I can glue a couple of braces there. If I get my hands on the idiot who read somewhere to use that stuff and thought it was a good idea… oh. Meanwhile I've got all the bits now, and looking at where they'll go on the front panel it's going to be pretty tight for the horn: I don't want to fit it and then find that I've got a problem with how to fix a grille on the front - I'm thinking I may even need to cut the front of the horn down a bit along the two sides parallel to the long axis of the ellipse. So I'm going to get a grille made before I start cutting any holes. Unfortunately the front recess isn't deep enough to use a flat grille like the Basschat design, so instead Mark at speakergrills.co.uk has quoted me to make one with folded edges (in powder coated steel - he doesn't powder coat to order for small quantities any more, due to cost, but says he's got a pre-coated offcut he can use and will touch up any cracks along the folds) which is not super cheap but I think it's the right solution to both protect the speaker and look decent. I'm thinking I'll add 'ears' to the cab at each corner to effectively extend the recess and protect the grille corners, and I've got some oversize plastic corner protectors which I'm hoping will make the thing look reasonably professional. So next stop is to await the grille, make final decisions about positions and then (gulp) get sawing…

That’s obviously the right answer. Although I don’t fancy 48 volts on the end of a jack plug.

Nifty! I was thinking one could fit that in a small box with the plug bit sticking out, and secured with a nut of the same thread size as the jack plug cover. Unfortunately you can’t add a ‘power on’ LED to this design because when the bass is powered on there’s no voltage available to run the LED. The real answer to this would be a circuit in the bass that put the electronics into an ultra-low-power mode if you didn’t play anything for more than an hour or something like that. I’m sure that’s feasible but it would need to be pretty titchy, so probably a surface mount design not something one could knock up on some stripboard (unless there’s more space in an active bass than I realise)

Thing is, if you get a switch to solve the problem of forgetting to unplug the bass whats to say you won’t forget to switch the switch off? (I hasten to add, I know I would!)

The battery negative is connected to the ring contact of the jack, and the circuit ground to the sleeve. When you insert a mono plug it shorts ring to sleeve thereby connecting power to the circuit. It's certainly possible there are other ways of doing it such as an isolated switch, but I think the above method is fairly standard

Well I thought I was listening to 6 Music via the iPod thingy, and it was playing a series of good solid 6 Music type tracks… in fact I was amused to note that I probably had most of them in my own collection. Even a bit of Les Claypool in there, nice. Why is nobody talking between tracks though? Isn't it usually Shaun Keaveney now? Has someone died? 😮 Obviously, it was actually that the iPod thingy had somehow gone on to a shuffle of my library instead. -
It ought to be possible to hack something together from a standard jack plug and a little diecast box or something. Maybe someone who makes custom cables could knock up a prototype.

Interesting replies, thanks! I’m especially grateful to everyone who held back from pointing out that six string basses are available 😁 I’m not sure that I’d get on with cello tuning though. I don’t have a 5, and have no immediate plans to go shopping… but I think I may have admitted to myself that I might be 5-curious.

So standard 5-string tuning is BEADG, obviously, providing an extra fourth of range below a 4-string bass. If you’re a pretentious jazz noodler, on the other hand, you can string your 5 EADGC, giving you access to an extra fourth of top-end pretentious jazz noodling. Here’s the thing though: I do sometimes want a D below my low E string, but I don’t actually like the really low end of a 5-string in a lot of contexts: it just seems to bring a different, somehow more synthetic character to the bass sound that doesn’t fit for me. On the other hand, I am (or try to be) a pretentious jazz noodler who could definitely stretch out on an extra high string from time to time. So why not get a 5-string and tune it, say, DGCFBb - or even (ulp) C#F#BEA - apart from the fact that it’s self-evidently weird and wrong and likely to cause havoc on swapping to a normally tuned instrument? Does anyone do this?

According to the spreadsheet that this guy has compiled, the only guest to choose a bass guitar was Linton Kwesi Johnson, while Gerald Moore and Mark Rylance asked for double basses. I think I'd choose an instrument I couldn't play well, so I could use the time to learn it. (Security, please eject the heckler at the back who said 'so a bass guitar then') -
Removed from the cab I’m now refurbing, I have a Fane C12-85 speaker with paper edged cone, so ideal for guitar but less so for bass, in 16 ohm impedance. It’s in OK nick and hasn’t been grossly abused as far as I know, with just a tiny dent in the cone edge. Free to a good home, can be collected from Heaton Mersey, Stockport (SK4 postcode).

Seeing as I’ve started participating in a few threads round here - and in particular have gained some invaluable knowledge and help on speaker cabinet construction in the Amps and Cabs forum - I should probably say hello. I’ve been playing bass on and off for nearly thirty years, having played piano and classical guitar before that. I’ve dabbled in jazz-funk, folk and blues but my main thing has always been jazz - it was Steve Swallow’s Duets album with Carla Bley that hooked me on bass and Swallow’s style and sound is probably still what I aspire to. I’ll listen to pretty much anything although let’s say I don’t often put thrash metal on for fun. I started listing bass and non-bass favourites but it took too long so for now I’ll namecheck Me’shell Ndegéocello and leave it at that. Scandalously, I’ve only ever owned two basses - a cheap Precision copy I started out on and the American Standard Fender Jazz I upgraded to. I’m pretty sure the Jazz suits me but I really ought to try out alternatives sometime. I’ve also scraped by with practice combos (currently a Marshall MBB15) and borrowed bigger amps as needed, but am now working on sorting out a decent rig as documented on my cab refurb thread. Oh and I recently acquired a Bass Pod XT which feels like cheating but makes some brilliant noises. Other instruments I own but can’t really play include congas, accordion, Turkish baglama, mandolin and theremin 😎

Way back when they first came out, I saw a picture of an Ibanez AFR in a magazine and was intrigued. I've never seen one for real much less played one, what with them making hen's teeth look commonplace. I now see that they've been reissued and even come up secondhand from time to time, so it's conceivable I might actually meet one one day. If so, I'm fully prepared to find it actually does nothing for me. -

The crossover for the Beyma is a few posts up on this thread I believe this is technically the Mark 2 version of the cab, while Mark 3 is the one with the Faital Pro LF and a more expensive Celestion HF driver. Stevie has just sorted me out with the components for this crossover at a very reasonable price so if you want to build one too I would highly recommend asking him. The thing you may have an issue with is getting hold of the PH-170 horn - nobody in the UK has them in stock before September...

That's my current approach - the PA power amp being an Inter-M R300 which is linear and fanless and is rated for 2 x 150 W into 4 ohms or 300 W into 8 ohms bridged. I don't know if you can get them new any more but they come up on eBay for a hundred quid or less. There's also an R150 and R500 with 150 and 500 W respectively, I think. Admittedly I haven't battle-tested this yet.
