hahaha... awesome... but he isn't!
He is. I gave him 7 the first time around, and later 10 for being persistent enough to try again with a different photo.

*cough* Compacts *cough* ? -
Unfortunately it didn't happen. Nothing to do with me (didn't even meet them in the end), but I'm very glad I started the thread as there's been a lot of informative posts and I'll be needing this info sooner or later (hopefully sooner).

Some really great posts coming in which I'm reading multiple times to try and learn the advice and strategies.
It might be worth contacting the guy in charge and getting a clue as to what you are jamming.
As far as I picked up, there would be a "band" meeting to meet everyone and discuss song choices etc. before any rehearsal was arranged. 51mon (v. funny post earlier) and Pirate have touched upon something I'm too scared to think about - what if the guitarist is going wrong. With such a short playing time under my belt I have no right to criticise anyone. I'm just worrying about the rhythm section and will cross my fingers on the rest.

Cheers guys - this is really helping. So they are human after all and can be treated as such!?!?
Watch the right foot - and make eye contact. Not like at a candle-lit meal - more 'what you going to play next?' glance.
LMAO.
Stand close to him/her, watch the kick drum pedal, and keep it sparse until you both find each other's groove.
Do you think I should make sure I learn the chord sequences (I'm pretty ok on my major/minor/7th arpeggios etc.) as well as just the riffs then? In asking the question, it seems an obvious thing to do but while I have the attention of experienced bassists I might as well cover my bases (yuk yuk yuk).
Hmm. This sounds like an extract from the problem page in a mucky book.
Getting dangerously close to that. lol.
You need to LISTEN.
Does it help to stare at them, or is that just going to freak the guy out? I try to listen to the drums when playing along to mp3s etc. but an mp3 doesn't go out of time, or throw in something unexpected... and can be restarted if you f**k up badly.

I should add it'd all be covers. So I guess I should be paying attention to the drum parts on the records too? Rather than just worrying about my own business?

I thought I saw a similar topic once, but couldn't find anything when I searched. There is a possibility I may have talked myself into a sort of casual jamming type situation with some more experienced musicians - it's not concrete yet, but could happen. I've been honest in saying how short a time I've been playing, how limited my abilities are etc. etc. but obviously the prospect of doing this thing is still a little daunting. I was thinking about it all this morning, and figured that there's not much I can do in a short time about my level; but it could make a big difference if I can somehow gel with the drummer asap if/when we start playing. Wondering if anyone has any tips for doing this? I'm sure there's no magic trick to it all, but this is an area of bass playing that I have no knowledge of and would rather not test their patience any more than necessary. Cheers.
It sounds like it should be the background music in a Pro Evolution Soccer game!
Or in the background for the Sky TV Guide thing. Nothing against the guy mind.

I've only gone and bought a Bootsy Signature Star Bass!
Eight replied to molan's topic in Bass Guitars
Do you have big enough maracas to play that thing out in public? I'd love to know the sales figures on those... -
Running C-F-Bb-Eb on my Warwick with no problems. Had to file the nut and raise the action (including the nut height - thank god for Just-A-Nut) to fit the B-E-A-D strings on but other than that I've had no issues.

I've got a few, but the only one I can be 100% sure of it's authenticity, is a Dimebag Darrell pick that I actually got hit by at a show. Damn near took my eye out.
Sounds like your speaking from experience.
Happy memories... lol Attention to detail is the way to get away with things. If you leave even so much as a scrap of parcel tape in the house, she'll find it. I hope she doesn't know your forum username btw.

Sales probably declined after this was released... The Avril Lavigne signature guitar. Ruined checks for everyone (unless you happen to like the little missy).
How much is the other Curbow up at? Don't remember a price being on it.
If memory serves, there was a price on it a while ago (which I won't post), but Crez then decided to take trades and offers so removed the asking price.
I reckon you should get it, you'll regret it later! Comes in a nice gig bag too.....
Hahaha. Please don't encourage me. I love my Curbow, but right now my money would be better spent on a cab than a sister for her.
what turned out to be sort of a joke is not funny, the seller refused to send anywhere but my address. Saying he;s got got more protection as a seller and if anything goes wrong then he's not covered through paypal. . Fairynuff.
Yeah that's pretty common. What you need to do is arrange a named day for delivery with the seller, and make it one when the missus isn't in. After delivery you take it (and all packaging) out to the car and transport it to your safe place.
The first half of the book is purely rhythm based and I've been playing a 'D' constantly for the last couple of weeks
Edit: Rubbish joke removed. To liven things up, next week play a B. Honestly, it'll be like a breath of fresh air.
Got to look around for an address to send it to now. the GAS inspector might not be amused.
You can send it to my house.

Sight reading or just being able to sit down and decipher it all in your own time? If the former, a great practice my bass teacher gave me (as opposed to my previous classical piano teachers) is to do sight reading exercises based around the notes (e.g. just a crotchett rhythm but different notes) separately from exercises based on rhythms (with just a single pitch). In reality, it's mainly sight reading rhythms people struggle with, and keeping them separate early on makes it easy for you to internalise the patterns of symbols so you're not counting, you just know what to do when your eyes scan over a marking. In the same way as you don't sit and read the letters e - a - s - y and construct the word easy. You see it one lump and just know what it says. Then combine the two with varying degrees of difficulty until it's all too easy for you. When you hit that point, learn classical piano so that you get to do two (often quite different) parts on two different clefs (e.g. the second line on one clef refers to a different note than the second line on the other) at the same time.
+1. But, why would you have your bass plugged in when you're not using it?
Maybe it's just me - but I frequently sit down intending to have e.g. a three hour practice session (I'm just a "bedroom" player). Maybe half way through I go to make a cup of tea... then maybe the phone goes... after that maybe I get distracted by something else I needed to do. Before I know it, it's been a few hours and I wander past and notice the amp etc. is still on (because it has a bloody big light indicating so), so I quickly turn it off and continue whatever it was I've ended up doing. Next day I return and realise the cable was still in the bass. Easily done - and frequent. I could put a sticker on the amp reminded me to unplug the bass, or the sodding bass could have a light on telling me it's draining the battery while it stands idle.
What exactly is that funky finish ?
I don't know exactly, but it kind of looks like a coloured broken ice type pattern (hence the name). I remember reading about how it was supposedly done, but unfortunately can't remember the actual details. Gorgeous though. And those ebanol fretboards are so nice...
