  1. I liked it back in the day when just a handful of great players did it......Mark King, Freddie Washington, the Wham guy and the American TV talent guy, forget his name, et al.....now it seems the goal is to play a million notes a second.......no thks.
  2. And the one single case which totally dispels the case for autotune? 'BOY GEORGE'.. Haha the most out of tune singer ever recorded but doesn't he sound great.....full of individual character.
  3. Look at Maggie May by Rod Stewart, loose and full of little hiccups....its so organic as to be unreal....feels live, sounds as fresh today as it did back in 71
  4. I dont think that argument works anymore. My dear old mum hated pop music and thght that Glenn Miller was the biz....but she was never part of the "pop" generation...she was pre-war, completely different cultural makeup. I on the other hand grew up with 70's pop, heavy metal, reggae , The Damned and Johnny Rotten..... So I am of the stuff it in there faces pop generation......but what Im hearing now?.....do me a favour?.....its so acceptable and lame I reckon my dear old mum would actually like it....and that sadly is saying something.
  5. Really? R4 playing some young artist right now. For the life of me I can't discern any instruments just sounds like a wall of grey mush....maybe some vibes...ok got that bit...and of course the obligatory vocal pitch warbling thing making the poor youngun sound like a demented robot. TV ads are full of session played hits from the 70's, have been for years....Wonder if this processed drone I'm listening to this morning will be flogging soap in years to come?...doubt it.
  6. I have every single version of Agadoo....you mean there are other genres available?
  7. I could play along to "One Love" on a loop all day on my P bass with decades old Chromes fitted........Not sure the neighbours would agree tho. It's just the most perfect rolling bass line.
  8. Saw the Bob Marley Sky Arts thing last night which gave me the unstoppable urge to flick the power switch and kill all the the treble knobs......Oh my indeed. Just spent the last couple hours today jamming to his greatest hits......beautiful bass playing...mmm
  9. But does she really dance live on stage without a ton of vocal backup...thats what Waterman was eluding too....that she cannot possible act on stage and sing in tune....so her live shows are wait for it synched.....
  10. Can u imagine if theyd used PCor on Boy George?.....Its his off key tone that makes him so darn unique and brilliant.
  11. For what its worth yes I think the thick 70's P necks do add some heft to the tone....dont know about J necks.
  12. Im sure this has already been said but pretty sure LB's arent long enough for a Stingray...hence the probs?
  13. Famous quote from Pete Waterman....as if I care, but hey. " I dont need Kylie to sing she just has to get up there and look good" I rest my case.
  14. Absolutely, or how about this for a crazy radical idea. Maybe sign artists that have talent and who can actually sing....I know way out huh? Still it may catch on...well see.
  15. A rant. Pitch correction has nothing to do with what makes great music....sorry but it really is BS. I mean what does it mean exactly if ur voice sounds like a micro managed robot? Did Motown, Philly Soul or any of the other greats from yesteryear use this nonsense?....
  16. I think genius is a bit over done but I hugely admire any bassist who can sing over busy bass lines AND has to front the band....it's a hell of a talent and Geddy is the master. However I dont include Sting in my admiration but I do do very much include Dave Peacock of Chas & Dave fame. I think he is one of the cleverest bassist/singers ever....Try playing some of those grooves and then sing the part.....he's equal too or better than Geddy.
  17. This and Ive played with some pretty fine musicians over the decades...however the vast majority wouldn't know a bass guitar from a pair of marracas! Real musicians dont care and dont wanna know cause all they care about is how well you play and if you cant hit that low Eb that everyone is waiting for then you may have to get a cheapo Fiver. But other than that.......
  18. I would utter the foulest the English language can deliver and run for the door.....
  19. Not totally sure what the title is getting at but I would say just about 50% of all 70's chart hits. From Tina Charles to ABBA, to Gilbert O'Sullivan to Pilot.........and musically I absolutely love em all. All of them are tightly written with massive melodies and very tasty bass patterns......If u wanna become a very good all rounder you gotta be able to play the 70's chart hits.
  20. I did quite a few years ago and I just could not do it...Playing two beat felt like I was strangling myself, I could feel myself wanting to funk it up a bit, hopeless......Really admire those with the discipline to do it.
  21. Oh my that 57 sounds like a light one too....raspy....beautiful and Suzi is the real deal....legend. Love her.
  22. Blimey I think the last Reggae tune I played was One In Ten back in 81.....not exactly roots reggae but fun times if I recall.
  23. Even now 40 years later I still go weak at the knees if I come across an original Orange 120 valve head or a Hiwatt 100 head or Ampeg V4B....used all three in the 70's with a P bass.......a glorious racket did they make!
  24. My listening tends to mean playing along to and at the mo its a delve back into ABBA's greatest hits..... What a brilliant bassilicious workout....show stuff, groove, jet fuelled 12 bar...its got it all....
  25. Depends on what u call great. Someone who comes up with totally new stuff or someone who can play everything on the fly. Used to watch a band at my local holiday bar in the 70's. Guitarist played a tele and could slay any tune thrown at him....Beatles, 60's, 70's pop and he did it with gusto, his sweeping chords on the bridge PU were mesmerising and sooo musical....so in my mind... a truly superb guitarist...but then so is Jeff Beck and and Pat Travers and totaly different. U pays ur money etc.
