How a bass string moves... interesting viewing!
Not even the first on this forum link The thread does explain that it doesn't actually move like that and why it appears to
Ah ha! -
I don't profess to have discovered this but I came across this on another local forum but I found it fascinating and interesting viewing! How a (bass) string oscillates... http://www.vimeo.com/4041788
... obviously its very unlikely to be a '59 jazz body (unless its a very early prototype )
IIRC didn't the earliest prototype Jazz have a pair of large, 4 pole piece, pups almost in the style of Nordy big single soapbars?

Don't know if it is a member's bass or not but the additions to the Ibanez listing are just crying out for the eBay police to pull it! -
I think your next port of call is to dis his work on all bass forums. Talkbass, Uglybass & any others you can find to let all bassists know of how rubbish his service is. I'd also frequently post on his website to ask "I've been waiting for a year now, can I have my money back" so that any visitors to his site can see he provides a poor service.
I'm not saying you shouldn't think of going down this route BUT be careful how you approach it. Once you have started dissing this guy on public forums he may well think 'f*ck it!' and then you have NO chance! Honest, non-judgmental postings are fine and asking for views/opinions may be fine, all I'm saying is don't back him into a corner and leave him with no options. It's far easier and better if you come across as a caring individual who is concerned about his health/business and not as a wronged customer, hell bent on revenge... unless of course he is a scumbag, who has fleeced you of your money in which case start ranting.
I can't say how chuffed I am that you've clicked the bass AND got your refund but I have to say from my extensive experience with eBay and PayPal I'd be quite frankly stunned if you have scored in this way whilst the guy gets to keep his money! I would seriously have thought that PayPal/eBay would have taken the funds back from the seller but if it has worked out the way you say then that does mean a massive shift in PayPal/eBay policy. Right... off to sell some tat on eBay!
Just as an aside/update on ebay/paypal resolutions... I purchased an album (yellow vinyl Cheap Trick @ Budokan as it happens ) on ebay several weeks ago and initiated a dispute for non-delivery which the seller then subsequently delivered following almost immediate contact after I started the dispute; any ways... the vinyl was scratched and NOT as described so I let the dispute run and the result is that paypal have found in my favour, refunded me and have made no mention whatsoever of me returning the album! I can only assume that this is the new ebay/paypal policy.

Set-up problem - New Strings = Buzz Heaven
warwickhunt replied to JackLondon's topic in Repairs and Technical
Why not slacken the truss rod (anti-clockwise) 1/4 of a turn OR (and) take your saddles up 1/2 a turn and see what happens. I'm sure one or both of those operations will sort it, if it is no better then you can consider paying to have it set up. -
I shouldn't think that the minimal changes in your new string gauges would affect the bass that adversely, unless you had/have a particularly dodgy neck! Problems can also arise if you change strings by taking them all off, then putting the new set on. You should change strings one by one to keep as much tension on the neck as possible! Without knowing the specific problem, I'd take it to a shop/luthier to be set up properly! Hope this helps, good luck for your gig! Si p.s. also gonna move this over to Repairs
Why should problems arise if you remove all of the strings at once? I do this and have done for the last 30 years with not a single issue... in fact most everyone (inc' reputed builders/luthiers) I know does it that way; it's the only way I know that you can give the fingerboard a clean whilst doing regular services/string changes. Even though your string gauges are very similar, there 'is' a difference in string tension which can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, this will have caused your set-up change. I would summise that the fact you say that your neck/fingerboard is flat means that you have very little relief in it so the smallest change in tension will require a tweak of the truss rod to get the action sorted and buzz free. -
I don't think the fact that the cabs have different drivers is important when comparing them. A speaker cab either does the job you need or it doesn't. We need to stop looking at the numbers in the specs and use our ears instead. The more speakers I try I find that the actual size and number of drivers in a cab is becoming less and less relevant. What matters is: 1. Do you like the tone? 2. Is it loud enough? 3. Is the weight manageable? 4. Do they fit in your chosen mode of transport? 5. Can you afford it? That's what's important.
Never a truer word said. I meant to add to my observation above, that the other aspect of me owning any gear is that for a live rig it has to fit criteria as you've described; transportability (will it fit in my car along with 1/3 of my bands PA without dropping the seats), portability (can I walk through a doorway without turning sideways/struggling or smacking my knuckles), audibility (can me/the band/the audience hear what they are meant to hear in a variety of circumstances), smileability (does it make me happy owning it... which includes tone and cost). To a greater or lesser degree many cabs would meet my requirements but as it stands the Aggies do it best 'on the whole'.

Thought I'd add a couple of pics as this bass has come up for observation of late... It is more of a mushroom creamy white than the stark white it appears in these pics.
c) Love the vintage look of the DB's but prefer a slightly bigger cab...must hear their 1x12 paired up though... Bergs) .. what was the thinking of 10's against the 15's...not really a like for like, but ok as a general comparison of what was to be had... Having said that, this could be the way for me to go having had an old SWR Goliath which was rear ported and had IMMENSE bass response but never boomy.. A total back-breaker tho, so 2 2x10's might work nowadays for me... As a general rule on big stages, I prefer a 2x10 and a 15 for the bottom. On smaller stages do you want the bass to be very toppy ..knowing it will blossom a few mtrs away...or go for bass right in front of it.. If this is stage monitoring only, then you can take your choice.. if it is the only bass sound in the room, then this needs to be considered more, IMV
Some of your observations that I can respond to. A pair of DB1x12's is IMHO more than the sum of the parts. I was mightily impressed with the Barefaced cab, though I won't be changing. To elaborate; this wasn't a scientific or even staged test, it was a bunch of locals getting a bunch of cabs together to see 'what if'. As such I established that as expected the pair of 2x15 cabs appeared to put out more bottom end than my Aggie 12's which leads me to the conclusion that as I have loads of bottom end with my Aggies when playing with my bands, in the venues that I do, the 2x15's would be 'too much' bottom end. As has been observed the Aggies have plenty of mids/highs/presence when compared to the other cabs which means I am on a win/win staying with the Aggies; "for my needs, in my live situation". re. the Berg 10's v 15's. As above we just got the gear together that 4 bassists use and did a bit of A/B/C/D comparison.
Did you get it from Sadowsky direct? Im just shocked and also pondering why they are cheaper than there normal metro basses. Is it due to it being a new model?
I got the Sadowsky by way of a 3 way deal with Chris 'Beedster'. I'm not so sure that it is cheaper than their 'normal' Metro basses; last time I saw one advertised new (and they aren't easy to source) it was only slightly less than the UV which was the most expensive Metro and more expensive than the MV/RV/RS.
-
BTW. was the Sadowsky used a NYC or a Metro? IMO the NYCs I've played sound plenty good enough on their own without needing any help from the pre-amp.
Metro; the preamp had a midge's nadger of bass and treble boost only because that's how I like it set and that's how it was when it was handed to WoT.

Hmmm... I guess the action on the Sadowsky may not come as a surprise considering comments in another thread but here goes; Sadowsky Metro 'PJ', (I 'think') Sadowsky blues .040, .060, .080, .110: 0.8mm, 1.5mm, 1.5mm Ahem... Low Zon Sonus, DR Sunbeams .045, .065, .085, .105: 0.7mm, 1.5mm, 1.6mm Low Bolin NS4, DR Sunbeams .045, .065, .085, .105: 0.8mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm Low Warwick Streamer Stage I (Owld Red), DR Sunbeams .045, .065, .085, .105: 1.0mm, 2.0mm, 2.0mm Medium Warwick Streamer Stage II, DR Sunbeams .045, .065, .085, .105: 1.0mm, 1.6mm, 1.6mm Low I have an engineering mate who loaned me some kit to take the measurements so I'm fairly confident in the accuracy. <edit> Just looked back at other actions on this thread... I'll stop trying to get mine lower I think! -
Corrected that for you. This is the Barefaced forum after all! Alex
Any chance you could photoshop some of those tatty old Fender basses out of your 'Barefaced' thread... you'd think bass hadn't moved on in the last 50/60 years!

Not wishing to derail this thread but are HK anything to do with Hughes and Kettner? It isn't just the initials that has me asking; they are both German based and HK literature mentions 'Dynaclip' (tm) limiting which I thought was trademarked to H&K! <edit> A ha! Just noted HK are based in St Wendel in Germany which IIRC is where H&K are based... may have answered my own question.
