hi just a quick question.now my band have sorted the onstage volume issues i was wondering if any of you lot just run direct into the desk and not bother with a bass amp.our gig on saturday is up four lots of stairs and to be honest im not looking forward to carrying my amp up them.
It really depends on how hot the output from your bass is; if you have to crank it on the desk to get sufficient level then you are in jeopardy of adding extra noise. Also does your desk have decent EQ and monitoring? How many aux does your desk have and will you get your own monitor mix, the last thing most singers want is the bass blasting through the monitors when they are trying to pitch themselves. If your desk has sufficient power to do you justice and you are confident that you'd be able to hear yourself then I would at least suggest a DI box or some form of preamp (in the past I've used a BBE acoustic preamp intended for acoustic guitar which worked equally well on bass).

After reading that thread I was all set to email the guy and order a virtually identical bass... luckily a quick walk with the dog and a cup of tea and I've managed to suppress (I stress 'suppress' not stop) my immediate GAS. If indeed his attention to detail is the same for every build (not sure how much of the stuff about selecting the blank is rooted in fact/science), then he is a master craftsman ; actually he's patently that anyway, but I'd love to get my hands on one of his basses and see if they step up to the mark. However, a ball-park figure of several thousand is a bit of a leap of faith so I'll wait and see if anyone else who read that thread pulls the trigger.
WoT, Import duty twice....? Sorry but that cannot do that - You only pay VAT and import duty on an item ONCE - You may have to pay for the service rendered, but repairs and returned goods are not subject of further levies (providing that you canof course prove that you have paid it the first time which of course I can!)
Obviously you'll be able to prove that you sent the neck out Bob... or at least that you sent out a tube which you say contained a neck! I'm just pointing out here that HMCE may well view the delivery of your neck back into the UK as a purchase and charge you the various duty fees, when you point out that you have a receipt of you posting out your neck to the USA for repair they may not immediately take your word for it because as we all know there are some who will pull such tricks to get stuff through without paying appropriate duties. I'd be prepared for the worst and expect them to try and get you to pay VAT and Import.
Here is a thread about a luthier making a 6.5 pound Jazz. My parcel eventually arrived (Glasgow to Newcastle) several days later than agreed, which was also Interparcel/UPS. Oddly enough I sent a complaint email and I've just got one back saying they apologise for not having picked it up, did I want to cancel... but it's sitting in front of me! Not sure you can blame IP/UPS as I think all couriers are shafted at the moment; I'm still waiting 3 days later for Royal Fail to deliver an effects pedal posted 'guaranteed' next day delivery!
Thank you for all your comment! haha Warwickhunt, you are quite correct, i did double it all the way through, dunno why........Of course this is the live version, the studio one is very tame compared, but you r right i did go a little busy.!
Phew, thought it was pretty shifting along! Nice mind.

Hmmmm, I've owned LOTS of Warwicks ([s]mostly[/s] all old ones) and not once had this problem, in fact I've had some of my Warwicks 15-20 years and not once have any of them ever needed any attention to the tuners. As Mart says the Warwick forum is a good place to look.
-
Crickey was the bassline that busy (doubled) all of the way through the song? I must have heard that song 100's of times and didn't realise it was so busy, though I can imagine the lift at the end being doubled like that.
I have 3 and play 2 of them all the time... so I will probably sell the 3rd in the NY..but I have been saying that for 18 months now. IF I get the right price for it, then it will go, I am pretty sure...but I'll not give it away.
Stop teasing and tell what the 'NY Sale' bass is then!

Bolin Basses... the shortest thread ever! ;0)
warwickhunt replied to warwickhunt's topic in Gear Gallery
So Mr Hunt, if I was to wander into the Fat Ox on Friday night, would I hear the Bolin in action?
I'd even buy you a pint to influence your view! I'm defo taking the Bolin, just torn between the PRS or my Streamer for the other... not taking all three as there's a silly amount of bliddy instruments knocking about on stage as it is. -
I owned a 'silly' amount of Warwick basses a few years back (anybody remember my sell off? ). It was very liberating when I went down to a couple of basses and despite buying and selling a few since then I've realised that I could very easily have the 'one' bass but for as long as I can afford a couple of basses that do different stuff then why shouldn't I. I do have to go with you Chris, there is something liberating about having one bass.
The part that bugs me the most was that they knew they could not delivery it but still took the booking made no mention of it being impossible to deliver. They have got the weather to blame so the insurance is void for the next day delivery. If however the bass has been damaged while kicking about their warehouse that should be different. I am hoping all will be well with the bass but if not I will be perusing a claim for any damage done while in their care.
That's what bugs me; I've organised a courier (UPS through Interparcel) to collect a cab and sent a couple of Leatherman tools via Royal Mail and BOTH parties accepted enhanced payment for next day delivery yet knew fine well they couldn't fulfil their obligation! The worst part is that Interparcel couldn't even collect on the agreed date despite no new snow or change in weather conditions for days. Grrrrr
Hence seriously concerned and bl**dy annoyed with Interparcel and UPS.
Ditto, on the 7th Dec I booked a parcel to be collected from Glasgow on Friday 10th (plenty of warning for Interparcel/UPS to organise collection), unfortunately they couldn't collect Friday 10th but could do it today (13th), so have they... apparently not according to the tracking details!
Id suggest a claim against the parcel company. Im not sure whether they will say the weather is something you cant complain against, but they should at least give you a discount.
The devil is in the detail and just as Royal Mail have managed to sidestep guaranteed delivery (despite the barstewards RM taking my money for the service) by quoting the weather as a factor beyond their control (Durgh the weather is beyond their control but taking money for a guaranteed delivery which can't happen IS within their control), so couriers are able to do the same; it'll be in the small print! Rant off and as a fellow sufferer of incompetence, I feel for you Dave.

Bolin Basses... the shortest thread ever! ;0)
warwickhunt replied to warwickhunt's topic in Gear Gallery
I can contribute to this thread by saying, one of the local music shops in nottingham had/has a Bolin... however, I never played it.... That is all!
If it's the same one it was in that shop a couple of years ago, I called up about it when on the hunt for one. IIRC it's a 5 string and despite it being there for at least a year when I called, they wouldn't budge on their price of about £2k -
I had a 2x10 cab years ago, the Trace, without the horn- never saw one with a 5" installed.
It was actually a pair of 10's and a pair of 5's. TE ran big ads with Mark King promoting them.

Spangly BFB Compact in da house!

Will you still have this on Friday? Totally unscientific but I wondered how it'd perform at The Fat Ox gig swapped with my Aggies! -

A very rare Squier JV Series Precision on eBay
warwickhunt replied to Grand Wazoo's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The eventual winner was "pushed on" by a 1 feedback bidder
Dismissing the 'potential' shill bidder it'd still be £700 which (IMHO) just before Christmas is less than I think it'd have made mid-Summer... a lot more than I'd be wanting to pay but that's the thing about 'Supply and Demand'! -
I'm talking in frequency bands though. Ported or sealed, I don't think there is much difference below 200hz (unless the sealed is seriously tiny and already rolling off by then). The cab material stuff, with flexing and suchlike is when it is acting as a pressure device, so is losing energy where that matters, which is low, but the stuff above that, aside from the out of phase reflection from a smooth surface, are down to the speakers own properties. This is what I am trying to confirm, with someone who actually knows. Maybe rephrase; 'what about a speaker enclosure affects the frequency response above 200hz, aside from internal reflections that are avoidable through lining?'.
I see what you mean but surely the effect that a cab has on what you are hearing is inextricably linked to all of the factors and that must surely include those below 200hz (BTW I've no qualification in acoustics so I have no idea if the 200hz you quoted is an accurate figure ) However, (just thinking out loud) before we get embroiled in the effect of cab design on the tone of a given speaker... going back to the question of the difference between a 10" and a 12" speaker. Surely there are far too many variables between speaker manufacturers products to even worry about the affect on the 'low end' of extraneous factors such as cabs and their design. Not all 12" speakers are able to accurately reproduce a given sound never mind a 10" v 12" debate. Yes/No?
Can one of the experts confirm/disprove this?: the effect of the design of the box generally (unles you get horn loaded and suchlike) mostly affects 200hz and below, the mids are affected to an extend by the lining of the box and how reflective it is, but most of the upper stuff is down to the speaker's own properties. Which is why guitar speakers have their own sound since that low stuff isn't very relevant, but a bass cabinet is down to the box design relating to the speakers.
Not sure what you mean! You've asked if it be confirmed/disproved that design of a cab affects the sound but then you've gone on to say that the design generally affects frequencies below 200hz, that the mids may be affected by lining materials and finally "a bass cabinet is down to the box design relating to the speakers"... surely all of those things are exactly what is being discussed or am I misunderstanding something? Aside from what you've confirmed can/does affect the sound coming from a speaker that is housed in an enclosure, all you've got to do is consider what happens if you take the same driver and fit it into a completely different enclosure. Even the materials that the cab is made from affect the sound, added to which if you don't brace a cab effectively that alters the tone; I'd think that design of a cab and its affect on tone would be apparent by comparing a ported and a sealed enclosure.
