1.
They were everywhere about three years ago but do seem less common now. I assume Fender bring out new ranges & push those instead. Personally I'd always favour a used Standard MIA over the HWY1 but the owners do seem to like them. I could never get on with the finish personally
Aside from the personal preference there's a big old difference in £££.
  2.
I'm looking at a P bass to possibly satisfy my inner JJ Burnel! Been checking out a few, MIA, and then stumbled across the H1. Thing is, they seem in fairly short supply, even on E- bay. Looked in here too, and not many come up. Shops don't really seem to have them either. Are they just simply not a big seller? I've read quite a few strong arguments to simply plump for a used MIA, and get a case thrown in!
They are like buses, there were a good handful on ebay 2-3mths back.
  3.
It doesn't look like a bad bass (although the naff ashtray and pickup cover need binned) but careful about a purported value. After all, it doesn't look like a 70's to me and those pickups would appear to be a definite retrofit.
I think BB5's covered the fact that the pups are later additions but I would be interested to know what the shop value is on it! TBH if you are agonising over it then the price would be the clincher and at an inflated 70's price I'd be steering well clear but if it is bargain basement (and you can stand that weight) then go for it.
  4.
i'm now looking at the promethean p5210 combo wit the 2 ten inch speakers, only thing I can't work out is whether the stack is 4 ohm or 8 ohm!! Ibanez site isn't too clear but indicates to me that that particular model is 4ohm so I should get full power from the head, anyone know??
Don't get sidetracked now! Are you likely to use the Promethian on its own in which case the 4/8ohm is immaterial, if you are adding an ext cab then you need it to be 8ohm but you are back to that dilemma of transporting the ext cab as well! I've heard the Prom 1x10 and it's a fascinating bit of kit but I seriously doubt that you'd be putting that up against 2 guitars... however, with a 1x10 Prom and an ext cab you are looking at pretty damn small. If it were me I'd be looking around to see what is available used in your locality, then see if you can blag a trial. See if you can manage with just a sensitive 1x15/2x10 or whatever config.
  5. There must be someone off BC lives near enough to let you have a little play through a cab such as a Schroeder or a Barfaced! I have a Tech Soundsystems 2x12 cab (courtesy of LukeFRC) and it is the size of a 1x12 and is designed exactly the same as Schroeder (one speaker on an angled, recessed baffle that you can barely see) and I would happily gig that in my 6 piece rock band (twin guitars, keys etc. doing Skynyrd ZZ Top etc) HOWEVER (sound of the the 'Can of worms' being opened), I rely on my cab(s) as part of my sound (rarely put my bass through the PA so FOH is my rig sound) and I like the sound that I get from my pair of Aguilar DB12's more than the Tech cab... does that matter so much to you?
  6.
Yeah science wasn't one of my strong points lol!! But I do understand what your saying!! So you reckon an 8ohm 1x12 cab COULD be just as loud as both my MAG cabs at 4ohms, but maybe not project quite as well. i have a feeling the efficiency in my two MAG cabs isn't going to be as good as buying one high end cab.
Yes in theory BUT if you are talking about stacking a single 1x12 driver against a 1x15 and a 2x10 chances are (almost certainly) that the bigger stack would win by virtue of the multiple drivers and more importantly some of the drivers would be closer to your ears! However that wouldn't put me off looking at the options available and not getting to hung up on the biggest badest cab available!
  7. The $$ pups are passive but the MEC preamp is active... yes? Just trying to help out here but I'm confused!
  8. I've owned 2x10 cabs that with the same amp at the same volume/gain setting, have been demonstrably louder than some 4x10, 1x15, 2x15... not ALL 4x10, 1x15, 2x15 mind you because that is the whole point of cab efficiency they are all different! My particular example of a 2x10 was down to the efficiency of the cab (not 4ohm v 8ohm) and the design which meant that you got more out of what your amp delivered and the perceived sound was plenty loud. There's plenty science out there to confound the humble bassist trying to sort out a rig!
  9. Those Strat style control knobs are an 80's feature aren't they? As to value; whatever it's worth to the shop! I've no doubt we'll kick figures around from £750 to £1500 but ultimately it's going to be whatever the buyer and the seller can come to an agreement on... what does the price tag say?
  10. Reading your OP a few times it seems that weight isn't the main consideration because you've highlighted that it's the ability to get the cab into someone's car! I don't envisage that you are going to be taking whichever cab you get on public transport (not whilst carrying your bass and a MAG head), if you are then you should really be looking at one of the new uber compact combos; Promethian etc. However, if the cab choice is a reduced dimension to fit in a friends car then start looking at cabs that are small enough to use as a standalone without factoring in bringing a second cab. I'm not trying to correct your own post but simply trying to clarify some of the thinking. As others have said don't get hung up on 4/8ohm, the efficiency is probably more important and don't forget that the sound coming out of the cab will make itself heard on stage if it has a mid-bias, some mid scooped cabs sound great in isolation and in certain band settings but up against 2 guitarists the colouration/tone of the cab design may make a difference. I've now tried a couple of the Barefaced cabs and the Schroeders (or earlier Tech Soundsystem which are the same design) and they achieve a particular/different tonal slant by different means.
  11.
Thanks CK but at my age it's unlikely. A year and a half before the pension kicks in so I have to live off a treasured bass (or maybe two!).
I'll have #2 off you... what a bunch of chuffin vultures we are! LOL You know I [s]mean it[/s] don't mean it Howie.
  12.
MB1. 48 Years Old. Do you know anything of its previous history? BUMP!
Yes, he's a cantankerous old drunken letch and he's bliddy older than 48... Oh sorry you mean the bass!
  13.
If it weighs 6.5lb, balances perfectly and still has the lovely resonance of a vintage jazz then it's got to be worth it for someone with back issues. All the best sounding jazzes I've tried have been heavy b*****s
Believe me, it was a whole heap of restraint to not contact the guy about a commission but I'm not going down the route of a custom order for anything that isn't my one and only bass... and that would be a tall order!

    MB1 Feedback

Just did a trade/deal with Martin for a couple of straps and an EBS pedal and he's a top fella! Despite RM trying to ruin it for both deliveries we got there in the end. All the best MB.
  15.
MB1. Sorry! Cheers John All The Best to you and yours! Martin.
Cheers Martin, Christmas and Royal Mail are not happy bedfellows!
  16.
Apologies for the slight murkiness of the photos - I had to rely on natural light, and we haven't seen the sun here since September
Ah yes I remember that day (sighs wistfully)... iirc we also had a sunny day in August but memory might be playing tricks on me it could have been July! I'd have had a pop at this but my OCD would have had me cleaning this bass to the point where I'd have halved the value.
  17. You're all thinking the same things as me and as for manufacturers 'guesstimates' which from personal experience can be as much as a lb or two either way; my Lakland Skyline JO was a classic case. Now if we can find someone who actually owns one...
  18. Just wondered if anyone has one and looking for thoughts, opinions and info... anybody know how they balance?
  19.
So, it matters if you have a back or shoulder problem, no surprise there, and for others a pound or two matters not. I'm very fortunate in that I don't suffer from any physical problems and I sympathise with those that do, but very pleased they carry on with suitable equipment. So does this mean those who immediately ask 'how heavy' as soon as an old P comes up for sale have a back problem? If so, it explains all. I note that our late hero in Detroit used a tall stool (sounds rather smelly!) to play for his long, daily sessions, but seemed to have a strap on too.
Yep, you've about summed it up and yes if I'm interested in a bass the very first question is "how heavy?". A tall stool (heck a comfy arm-chair would be the ultimate but it'd have to be a neo chair so that I could carry it) would be fabulous but at the moment I can manage with a lightweight bass; ultimately one day an X brace strap and a bar stool may be necessary!
  20.
Lets just say, without going into all the detials, i have a 2099 euro cardboard box
What's the craic?
  21.
Here's Happy Jack, Warwickhunt and I jamming at a recent BassBash
Can I be the dude in the hat?
  22.
The amp doesn't have an additional speaker out (internal speaker is hardwired into amp )and according to the spec's its 4 ohms minimum. Its one of those D class power amps, so I'm not going to push it 'cause knowing my luck! Looking forward to the next gig and seeing the the guitarists faces. I'm up against 2 100w Marshall half stacks, should be fun!
Gotcha! I wasn't sure how it was configured.
  23.
Weight matters to my body a great deal more than it seems to matter to the tone or feel of the bass (and I do realise that not everyone will agree with that statement). I've had 11lb basses which sounded great, which sounded OK, and which sounded pretty rubbish frankly. I've had 7lb basses which sounded great, which sounded OK, and which sounded pretty rubbish frankly. Given that High weight does NOT equal Great tone, I can't think of any reason to buy a heavy bass. I can play a 7lb bass all evening, sleep well, and wake up with no aches or pains. An 11lb bass will have me in pain within an hour, and in agony after two. As the young people of today keep telling me, "Simples".
+1 However, those who don't have any form of discomfort from playing a heavy bass will have little sympathy and that's fine... till they are my age and then (death notwithstanding) we'll have the last laugh!
  24.
Hi there, I'll probably replace the speaker as I want to hook up my peavey 115 and that would make the impedance too low for the amp to handle. The Data bass's speaker is only 300W 4 ohm and the amps capable of 450W @ 4ohm. I agree the Black Window's are good speakers, we use a Peavey PA system and have only blown one speaker in 16 years!! which I reconed. Cheers Cammie
I can appreciate that if you are wanting to run an additional cab it's worth replacing the driver BUT if the amp section has an additional output can you not connect up an additional cab? I know many Peavey amps can run at 2ohms... I don't know for sure, just thinking out loud.
  25. Speaking personally, I have a recurring shoulder injury (age creeps up on us all) and I can't gig a bass weighing more than about 9lb; I've set my limit below that just in case I have to do extend spots or 3 sets. This matter has been raised on here in the recent past and to a great many people the weight of a bass isn't an issue as much as the balance is (mine is pretty much purely weight). There's loads of good advice about wide straps, X brace straps etc. but for some it is plain and simple, an issue that matters when purchasing an instrument!
