1.
I presume you're being ironic...but if you really want to post 'erection jokes'( and I'm struggling to find a link between bass playing and erections), maybe in Off Topic and in the Bad Jokes lounge?
My point was that an erection is a condition that only affects men. Therefore if we cannot make PMT related comments we should not be able to erection based comments either. There is a difference between a sexist joke/comment and one based on sex/gender. PS: I understand that PMT have opened their new store inside and erection in London (OK not funny, but hopefully you get my point))
 2.
I agree with Yorks5stringer, there's so much casual sexism on this forum and people refusing to believe they're being offensive even when told to their faces. You'll be telling us that the prisoners have taken over the jail next.
Fortunately in this world people are still allowed to make their own judgments and have their own opinions, even if people are trying to tell them something different 'to their face'. (otherwise we'd all vote for what the last person told us to) If I or someone else said 'Get over it' to your face I wouldn't expect you to instantly change your opinion.
 3.
At the risk of re-igniting things, may I suggest you re-read the comment on #17? Whilst the PMT thing reeks of stereotyping by smirky boys( actually do all women have mood swings?), 'the blood will be spilt' comment is an example of a man putting a negative spin on something that is out of the woman's control, yet essential to us all. I just don't feel cos woman have periods it should be used against them in cheap [s]jokes[/s] comments...... All it does IMHO is reinforce that this is a Boys Club and we that should be a lot more inclusive than we currently are.
Well yes that one is less tasteful, but surely it's still just a tie up between the initials and a fairly common expression. Personally I don't see that as making fun of women, or making a joke at their expense. Does this mean we can't make 'Erection' jokes anymore?
 4.
and of course men never have moods swings? Some cheap comments appearing on this thread. You'd think we have no women members.... Oh, before anyone says anything like, 'it was just a bit of fun',.... don't.
PMT, PMS whatever you call it, is an acknowledged medical condition that only affects women, and can reveal itself as mood swings. I don't see any problem with making a comment based on the shop having the same initials. I don't object to people calling other people a 'dickhead' just because only men have dicks.
 5.
you serious? being able to mix the mic levels WHILST ON STAGE SPEAKING THROUGH THEM doesn't seem a tad easier? get your levels from front of stage, left of stage, right of stage, centre of room, back of room in one go whilst walking with the ipad.....
As I say, I've not used one, but looking at some of the screen shots above you don't get much on one screen. With the old knob type you have instant access to to gain, tone controls (3-6 ), foldback mixes and main mix (& possibly pan). I.e. around 8 per channel on a basic mixer. ie 128 pots on a 16 channel mixer, + mute buttons etc), + master controls. All there infront of you for instant access. Perhaps I'm just an old stick in the mud.
 6. I haven't used one, but I can't see how it's going to be easier than a desk with knobs on.
 7. Have some of us missed the point here? The Amplug plugs straight into the bass without a cable, and the headphones plug straight into the amplug. You don't need anywhere to put extra bits & Pieces and can walk from one room to another if required. The other solutions suggested all involve a free standing additional unit of some kind. I use a Tascam GTR 1, which is great, but I have to find somewere to put the trainer and if I want to move to a different chair, change room, or just want to wander around it becomes a bit of a pain. I have no idea how good the Amplug is aurally or technically, and obviously it does a lot less than some of the other ideas meantions, but conceptually it seems a great idea.
 8.
I bet you didn't know you could use a banana as a gauge though. If you like root vegetables I'd suggest a prize-winning parsnip.
But those are so thing and pointy that they're sort of pointless.
 9. I bought a couple of K&M ones several months ago - the ones with the telescopic boom. Early days but they're brilliant so far. Everything fits nicely, no wobbly joints and they stay where you put them. Seem to remember they were around £30 each, but worth every penny in my book.
 10.
It's a good thing that Barefaced are so light ... it makes it easy to load them up with extra heavyweight features.
Is that the same as 'heft'?
 11. One way would be to put transformer in the cab. Constant secondary impedance to the speakers, switchable taps on the primary. ... Could get a bit heavy though!

 13.
Does he not have his own diary, like the rest of us? (I know he does, he told me that he is rubbish with his diary) I repeat, we don't have an online diary that is shared between us. We all have our own diaries. BUT, maybe we'll set one up for the future
In that case I apologise for my mistake, I obviously got the wrong end of the stick somewhere along the line. An online gigs listing is not quite the same, although I can still see why the drummer might have got the idea that it wasn't on. However it could have been a private gig that wouldn't make it to the Public gig listing anyway. Sounds like he wasn't too comitted anyway.
 14.
The rest of the band knew about this gig even though it wasnt on the calendar. The OP has also said the drummer is not very good at keeping tabs on things.
If you didn't have a band on-line diary then I'd totally agree with you. But as they did then surely the whole point is that that is what you work to. If it doesn't get put in the in the diary then it's not unreasonable to think it didn't come to anything. If you don't like this idea than don't have an online diary, and everyone will maintain their own.
I can see it was a genuine mistake on both parts, but the drummer decided to walk and i think that was the best result.
I'd agree with that - the drummer obviously wasn't very committed anyway.
Ive been in the OP's shoes where you try and keep it all going, only to have band members causing more issues for the gig booker, and if you are doing this as a side line then sometimes it just comes to a head and something needs doing about it.
The OP took the gig but didn't put it in the band on-line diary, thus defeating the object of the on-line diary.
 15.
or you could ask if anything came of that date, as i didn't write anything down, because its not my job to, regarding an enquiry and i have something else come up if we arent doing it? I would expect any sensible person to at least pencil something in on a date that has been enquired about.
Hopefully I can say without upsetting the OP. "We all make mistakes, butI would expect any sensible person to update the band diary when the date is confirmed".
 16. As with some others here I'm afraid my sympathies are with the drummer. If you're going to have a central band diary then that should be the master. If someone asked 6 months ago if I was OK for something, but nothing appeared in the band diary then I'd assume it wasn't on.
 17. You're all missing the point here. The darkglass cabs obviously contain significantly more snake oil than other brands.
 18.
That's why some amps have multiple taps. Nonetheless you won't get more power from a tube amp by using a lower impedance load the way you do with SS.
Yes I see what you mean (I think). The maximum power output from the tubes remains the same, but getting the right impedance match means you lose less of it in the transformer/speaker interface.
 19.
With an SS amp the power is delivered by the output transistors to the speakers. The lower the speaker impedance the higher the current draw and therefore the higher the power. Valves deliver their power into the output transformer. Since it presents a constant impedance load current, and therefore power, is also constant.
For the primary side of output transformer I agree, but the power transfer efficiency from the secondary to the speaker is best when the two impendences are the same, and falls off if mismatched either way, so the right impedance match is still going to give you more vaolume than a poor match. (There was a time when I used to be able to do the sums to prove this - and the same sort of sums for an exponential horn - but that was a long time ago!)
 20. We use some 15" Full range Shermann cabs driven by a QSC something or other, and put everything through it when we need to, and its sounds very good. Mind you they are pretty heavy and a definite two man lift to get them on stands. Never quite understood the need for subs. My idea of a good PA is that you don't know it's there (apart from the volume of course) and that's what we get from these cabs .
 21.
There is a switch on the back of the Orange Terror Bass 500 watt amplifier that's switches between 4 & 8 ohm. Orange claim the speaker will get 500 watts in either setting. I wonder how that works ?
I guess that it would change the tapping on the output transformer between 4 and 8 ohm tappings.
 22. About 35 years ago my girlfriend, now wife, lived in a bedsit in Crouch End (London) and the bass player from Bad Manners was living in the same house. (I never met him and I wasn't even playing bass in those days).
 23.
I keep seeing posts about the concerns with speaker cab ohms ratings, and although with more efficient speakers and higher powered amps this is mainly irrelevant these days it got me thinking. With the old valve amps I believe you could plug a dummy resister in to simulate having a speaker plugged in so as not to damage the amp if powering up with no cab connected. Could a variable resister to used in cabs to allow you to alter the ohms rating of a cab, allowing for greater versatility and mixing and optimal matching of cabs? Like I say, probably redundant these days with the more efficient equipment easily available but I was just wondering. Waddya think
Are you thinking of the Power dump resistors you used to get, so you could run your valve amp flat out to get the sound, but at a much reduced volume level? I think Marshall used to do them. Just checked - Marshall did one called a Power Brake, but it seems there were also many others available.
 24.
How about a hotone thunder bass amp. It isnt a combo, but they are tiny and get decent reviews. Never used one myself, but always tempted. The cab is small too.
Bit late now - see above. Watched a demo anyway and I love the tone. However it seems a bit pointless if they're making a point of it's size and then demo it through a 4x10! Their own little cab is tiny, I'd love to see a demo of that. The prices look bloody good as well. Anyone here tried one out?
 25.
So let's assume that you like to play bass and you like to gig. Say I go to your gig and I think you are rubbish. Would you prefer it if I shouted offensive, obnoxious and possibly even threatening abuse at you to the effect that you are rubbish, or would you prefer I kept my own council? I'm sure most folk would prefer the latter. Doesn't mean you shouldn't gig. Doesn't mean I shouldn't think you're crap. But I should show a level of respect towards you as a fellow human being. If I fail to do that then I should be pulled up for it. What's different about female dancers?
Of course I would prefer you not to shout it out (perhaps slip me a card with the number of a good teacher). I'm saying that if I regularly got abuse saying I was crap and if it upset me enough then yes, I might well decide to not play that sort of gig again, or give up altogether. If I am a crap player (actually I'm really really average) but want to really carry on playing then I'd have to accept that I was going to get some abuse for being crap. It would be pointless carrying on doing it and then whinging that I was getting abuse. I'd either have to: A: Get better B: Accept the abuse and just get on with it C: Stop doing it. I repeat again, please take note everybody. I've said it several times already in the thread, but no one seems to have noticed: I AM NOT SAYING THIS SORT OF BEHAVIOUR IS ACCEPTABLE, but it happens in the real world. By all means try to change it, but in the mean time make your decisions based on how the world is, not how you'd like it to be. Re the dancers: I have (I think) deliberately avoided mentioning the gender of the performer. One of the worse examples I have seen was a documentary about a certain type of club on "Ladies Night", and I didn't notice anyone trying to stop them shouting out their base desires.
