I recently bought a mint EBS neoline 2 x 10 at a bargain price. The reason being the previous owner had taken out the EBS speakers to fit in another cab and fitted a pair of oldish Fanes 10 inch 'bass speakers' which are so heavy it makes the total weight of the cab close to 30kg I have intended to remove the Fanes and then replace them with a pair of new Celestion neo 10 300 watters making a standalone 4ohm 600 watt cab but when i started playing through these speakers with an old sound city valve amp they sounded pretty good I am tempted to leave them in for a while but I do not know their power handling. Neither did the previous owner. The speakers have thick cast metal frames big flat magnets with a sticker saying Fane Loudspeakers made in Batley Yorkshire Rectangular spring loaded wire clamps with impedance stuck on them on a little yellow sticker (16ohm) there are two codes on the frame 104143 that is on both speakers and then 834/89 and 843/89 on the two one cone has the number 100 in white across the cone is the word ACOUSTECH any advice would be helpful skez
Usually means you are maxing out the input gain. Are you using an effects pedal in front of it? Or are you using an active bass or some other bass with a very high output? Other than that, Deepbass5's comments above about a small amp's general capabilities are relevant. No pedals

Make sure you aren't clipping the input. Turn the bass down and the amp up. If the amp has a master volume run that high and the input gain low for maximum headroom.

If there is no input gain level knob on the amp, then use the bass volume knob. Do this. Turn the amp volume knob up all the way, then plug in the bass with the volume knob(s) turned all the way down. Then, gradually turn the volume knobs on the amp up until it gets to the "farting thing", then turn the volume knob(s) down just down below that level. Yes that seems to work cheers skez There you go.
I have tried to us the new multiquote button (respond to two or more quotes in 1 posting) I cannot make it work and just get single quotes. Can anyone give me some simple instructions on how to do it. skez

  19.
I own, have owned and have played through in no particular order: Trace Elliot, Ashdown, MarkBass, Crate and Ohm, Marshall, Peavey, Ampeg, Behringer and probably several amps. I have never had any trouble getting a good sound as long as I start with everything flat, and then either tweak what needs tweaking or leave it alone. However I have also see people twiddling the same amp and getting a crap sound by not setting input & output volume correctly, pressing pre-shape buttons & adjusting the graphic eq into smiley face.
I agree start with all amp and guitar controls flat.

I do not use pedals but the bass is active. Im glad to find out it is probably the amp as I was just going to spend £50 on a new speaker. skez
