Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2020?
chris_b replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
I bought a BB2 last year, which was delivered in Feb, then bought the cover. Other than that, no bass purchases so far this year so far. No plans for anything, either. -
My goto bass is an MV5 and I'm on my 3rd set of D'Addario NYXL strings. They are full bodied with a nice crispness to them and they seem to be very Sadowsky preamp friendly.

Music for pleasure vs for music viz learning
chris_b replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I'd always suggest listening to everything. I can learn from stuff I don't like. It might be a challenge but if it improves your playing then it's a worthwhile exercise. In lockdown #1 I reacquainted myself with the sets I'd played in the previous 3 years, then I charted about 30 Stevie Wonder songs. They're good, I know them but have rarely played any. It was a great learning experience. Now we're in lockdown #2 I'm looking at Bobby Bland (the California Album era), going through the Daryl's House videos again and looking at Kylie Minogue's Glasto set. There are songs here that I know and like, some which are technically more demanding and some where I don't know the style at all. Learn from everything. -
Music for pleasure vs for music viz learning

I always analyse and play my favourite songs. You've got to know what makes your favourite music tick, but I'll never suggest them to the band because they'll never do them justice. In this house there is always music in the background. I don't listen to much music these days, unless I'm working on a set. When I'm on my own I prefer R4. -
Favourite one liner quotes about bass?
chris_b replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
In the interval I was having a pee and 2 guys came in and stood right next to me. They started discussing the band. One said to the other, "What do you think about the bass player?" The other replied, "Dunno, couldn't hear him!" I was going through the PA and the stage volume was rattling my fillings out!! -
The best 112’s I’ve owned have been Bergantino and Barefaced. My preference being BF. Vanderkley are local to you. I’ve seen many good reports about them.

Love it. Excellent playing and a great groove.

There is a special place in hell reserved for NME journalists. It’s in the section labelled “pretentious and irrelevant bollocks”.

Some VERY good news at last - live music back by the Spring?
chris_b replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
. . . . . . and then those pesky Danish mink come along and ruin the whole plan!! -
You can never underpower a cab. If you want a clean sound, less power into the cab gets you there.
-
I know someone who has Barts and a John East Pre in his Overwater Jazz. Don't know which models but the sound of that bass is the best I've heard.
-
Pedals don't interest me, but amps do. So far, the quality cab manufacturers (Vanderkley, Baer, Bergantino etc) who branched out into amp design and production have come up with some great amps, but have limited their sales by only focussing on "super" amps. These have all been way outside of my, and I suspect most people's, budget. Jim Bergantino seems to be the only guy who's making a commercial success of his amp project. I know Alex will come up with a stunning amp, I just hope there is an affordable version as well.
-
IMO you won't be disappointed. I'm jealous, I have played several and they are all top quality with a stunning tone. The reasons I don't own one right now - all the used basses I've seen have been too heavy, ie up in the 10, 11, 12lbs area, and sadly I can't afford a new one!

Illicit rehearsing.. UPDATED WITH MU GUIDANCE
chris_b replied to Jakester's topic in General Discussion
The "Cummings broke the law so I can too" defence didn't stand up in the first lockdown and I doubt similar positions won't will this time either. PS Edit to sort out bad grammar!!!! -
Sad news. KH was in a band called the Gods, featuring a very young Mick Taylor. He used to support many of the bands I used to see, Jeff Beck Group, John Mayall etc.

Illicit rehearsing.. UPDATED WITH MU GUIDANCE
chris_b replied to Jakester's topic in General Discussion
Our band leader came up with the logic that we were being paid for the gig so it was work and we could carry on rehearsing in his shed/studio. The rest of us weren't so sure. Since the gig's been cancelled we have opted for a lay-off until the end of lockdown. It'll be a great gig when it happens, and the rehearsals were fun, just not now. -
I would imagine the magic is in the pre and power amp.
-
First learn the song. The bass line should fall into place after that.
-
I'd be interested to look at the new Sadowsky basses when they appear. My real wish is for lots of gigs.
-
I just love listening to people who can sing.

Another acapella song, showcasing a great voice. . . . . . -
What gear do you use to get the best tone for your bass DI?
chris_b replied to violetelectric's topic in Recording
For my last recording project I DI'ed a TH500 into Logic. Two seconds to set up and the sound was much better than any of the preset tones the band suggested. My Lull PJ5 with flats and foam sounded the Dog's. Sadly "personalities" killed the project half way through the rhythm section stage!
