1. Fantastic. Seriously though, the search function is your friend
 2. Ok so I went on the internet and ordered an SM-audio M-patch 2 which is basically the same as that other analogue volume controller but with a headphone preamp built in which is what I wanted. Also I ordered a pair of iso-pads for the speakers to sit on.
 3.
Hmm not sure. I can think of loads of songs that are in D that sound great. Its not like the bass player has got to play the root note - in D he can use the D on his 5th fret 3rd string then use the 4th string upwards to complete a bass line. James Browns band did it a lot. You gotta love the dusty Eb on the 11th fret of the 4th string too. OK, you might have a bit more hand movement on a 4 string but people will come up to you after the gig and think you are brilliant. Its just being lazy on a 5 string with your hand stuck in one place
Well it might be good to do for effect every now and again but I don't think it is ideal. Having a 5 string just gives you the option of using the root note, doesn't mean you have to use it every time.
 4.
And that is why your earlier comment holds no water.
Alright mate, don't get your knickers in a twist
 5. Strictly speaking, you're endorsing a company's product for a special deal or if you're lucky, free stuff.
 6. The guitarist's new hair: If only I could grow hair like that- we could be in a steel panther tribute band
 7. TBH, I think that is pretty much what the recording forum is for.
 8.
The depressing thing is that the very medium which allows small bands like Dick Venom to be totally in control of our music is also the one that is making it even harder than before to be in a situation where it is possible to make a living out of creating, recording and playing music without having an alternative source of income.
Well that's just the way it goes; can't have your cake and eat it. If being a big name in the music biz was that easy, I think half of us lot on this forum would be rockstars by now...
 9.
And BTW if you'd read the whole of the original article in the OP you'd have seen that while getting the actual music files themselves doesn't actually cost you any money, in order for you to have access to those files, you've paid for a computer/phone and your internet connection/data plan, so as the author says, by doing this you are actually supporting "The Man" and sticking it to the small artists.
You mean by paying for the internet that we would use anyway? I mean, you're clearly using the internet right now to write on this forum, so on that basis, you are propping up "the man" just as much as any of us lot.
No offense Nigel but that makes you sound like a pretentious twat.
Nigel? Surely not!
 10.
But to sustain a career in music is not then easily possible is it. To make the best music you can make and really represent yourself at your best, you need to dedicate a lot of time to it, practising, writing, refining, learning, touring, promotion .. giving yourself the best chance at a sustainable career. You can't do all this and have a day job to pay the rent and eat and fund the next musical project.
You certainly can't. I would like to think if people listened to your music enough, they would pay good money to see you at a show, buy your merch, hell maybe even buy the odd CD or 2 Don't forget you also get paid for youtube views if you get a certain number as well.
 11.
If i was popular enough to have stuff stolen/downloaded/pirated i wouldn't care.
Speak for yourself- I've had my song downloaded 4 times off soundcloud
 12.
You only have to look at the forum software changeover how people around here don't like change
Bring back version 1 I say. I've pretty much given up on the idea of everyone actually paying for my music who wants to listen to it. As far as I'm concerned, if I ever get around to making a website and sh*t I'm going to give people the option to donate if they like our songs. The fact is the tide has turned and no matter how much these corporate dinosaurs try, they are not going to get back to the heyday of making everyone have to pay for an LP to listen to it (not that you couldn't copy LPs of course; in the soviet union they used to make bootleg western music LPs out of old x-rays!) IMO the biggest thefts are on the part of the record companies who take 90% and expenses on top from bands.
 13. I think the local PC world might have one, but they're called "Knowhow" or something like that these days anyway only joking. I don't think you would be able to get both jobs done in the big smoke for that kind of money. If you want something done right as they say, do it yourself. But make sure you keep away from any capacitors. That sh*t is dangerous.
 14. 1. alembic 2. Ibanez 3. Peavey 4 - 8. No idea 9. MusicMan 10. Warwick
 15.
Got till Monday to decide whether I want to keep it. I love it but I'm not sure I can justify it.
On the other hand, how are you going to justify keeping it with that big dent at the bottom? lol jk
 16.
At least it's better than Lil' waynes attempts at guitar.
He is obviously not a real guitarist, because he doesn't use a pick!
 17.
Yeah I'm pretty sure that he's being covered by a bass player not quite on camera - I thought I saw a bassist over to the right at some point.
Are you sure that is not just someone holding a broadcast mic?
 18. It sounds as if the bassline was being doubled by a synth during the verse but he looked to be playing it during the chorus. I quite like that song actually.
 19. I have been known to do it on occasion...
 20. Not too bad. My criticisms would be that you can't really hear the vocals all that well. Also, the drums aren't really doing it for me. I like the sound of the guitars and everything, they seem to fit the music quite well.
 21.
I like that something that was new and controversial in the 1950s is now venerable enough to be 'traditional'. I wonder if old rockers who say 'slap is not proper bass playing' see the irony?
That is it, exactly! Hence the quotation marks around "traditional" and everything like that.
 22.
Apologies Coilte, not singling you out on purpose to make that point. Wouldn't be the first time my sense of humour didn't come across well. My genuine opinion is that playing any instrument in any way is valid as long as it makes the sound that's desired. As for who is more important in a band- every role is important and should be respected as such. My feeling is that folks who think bass should have four strings and be played with fingers in a subordinant role are missing the point of music in general. Music (and instruments) are in a constant state of evolution. To have the progress of that evolution stop at a certain point seems redundant to me and shows up a particular characteristic about someone that I really don't like. Like Frank Zappa said - a mind is like a parachute. It only works if it's open.
I agree, absolutely. I think some people worry that "traditional" music is under threat from these new fangled 12 string basses or whatever. I couldn't agree less with that myself; you still have people playing concertos from 1756 in their orchestras. There is no reason you can't choose to play bass in the "traditional" way (IE the 1950s sort of way) but equally, there are going to be people who want to push the boundaries.
 23. I'm not sure starting your auction off at the price you want to sell it for is the best idea. Better either having it as a buy it now or putting it at a lower starting price to increase interest.
 24.
Shut up Wooks
Yeah Wooks, why don't you go actually talk to someone who isn't interested in basses (Cheryl Cole)
 25. You can have your status mate; I'm not into these new-fangled "string basses" anyway...
