  1. Just observing that deposits aren't illegal as such. I can't offer a judgement on your situation as I'm mot an expert.
  2. My hand works on my fivers, it just doesn't feel as comfortable, and I have long fingers. Close spacing is an option, but too close can inhibit fingerstyle. Let's just say I have never found a fiver I can play like a four? Regardless of muting issues.
  3. Is a non-refundable deposit legal in the UK? The answer is: it depends. Generally, deposits are refundable unless there is a clear and agreed contract term stating they are non-refundable. Even if you have a non-refundable deposit clause, UK law requires the term to be fair, reasonable, and clearly communicated before the contract is made.
  4. For a moment there I thought you were takingvthis light-hearted topic all too seriously. I play fivers now and then. And I play with a plectrum sometimes too. Sometimes we do what we have to do, not what we want to do.
  5. I think they are. They demand a distinct right and left hand technique, especially with regard to muting, and a different mindset with regard to the scale patterns you use. No. There's an optimal number related to the size of a typical human hand. A typical five is too wide to allow thumb muting and left hand fingers access to all strings without a lot more wrist flexion.
  6. Five string basses are a completely different instrument. Musically they offer very little more at the expense of being considerably awkward to play in a way that's kind to your joints. They are fun to use and useful in lmited situations, but most people who 'need one as it's better playing across the neck' would be better off with a short scale or a baritone bass.
  7. Adjust your intonation using your normal fingering at the octave, using a tuner to compare the harmonic with the fretted note. Get it right for your normal finger placement and this will help across the neck. As you get your ear in, you will start to rely on the lines less... but with the long neck on an electric bass it's much harder to hit the right spot when jumping to a note without some yardstick to guide you). It can help to aim slightly flat, as it's easier and sounds better to roll your fingertip up to the correct pitch than to drop down. EDIT: Whoops sorry if that's egg-sucking stuff, I thought this was another thread...
  8. I just got a Ali Express rechargeable clip on fan, to blow air up the back of my shirt. £7. I wish I'd had it earlier in the summer!
  9. Decent rehearsal tonight. Cut a bit short as drummer is waiting for an mri on a rotator cuff injury. "Did you do it drumming?" "No I fell over when I was pïssed." Six new songs went well. Also jammed Midnight Specialn which I'm not familiar with. Just listened to it, and my line wasn't that far off. My new earplugs worked excellently. Used the Sire P10. Got told I was a bit quiet. Did a lot of subtle fiddling with eq to no great effect - eventually realised I was in passive mode with two songs to go...
  10. Sounds like Nightwish with a harmonic minor scale (not a criticism).
  11. You could add some water to the titebond if it's too thick to run into the crack, maybe a little "pumping" with the headstock to let the glue run into the crack. Edited 22 minutes ago by RonC Pretty much what these guys are saying. Personally, I would not use typical luthier adhesives (they are for joints you want to open up again in future). I would get hold of a top quality aliphatic adhesive like Super 'Phatic. This a super thin, super strong adhesive with excellent penetrating powers. Open up the crack as much as you can with safety and allow lots of Super 'Phatic in - it will wick right into the joint. Leave it for about a minute, then clamp the joint closed (have all your clamps and weights ready before you start). It's NOT a superglue so won't haze the finish and you can clean up with a damp cloth as soon as the crack is closed. The set adhesive is utterly waterproof - I have repaired ceramic plates with it, and they have survived years of use and even going through the dishwasher afterwards. https://deluxematerials.co.uk/products/super-phatic
  12. Jazz basses are innately lower output. I never have any problems as I adjust the gain to compensate almost without thinking.
  13. Safer than using AI:
  14. So many excellent takes on this Howlin' Wolf classic, but this is one of my favourites.
  15. Probably time for an electrician to get involved.
  16. Today I got a WhatsApp message: Myself and F---- had a good talk a few nights back when we were out and we came up with what we thought were some really nice ideas for some staging for the show on the 19th. It us relatively minor stuff but will give it a but of a coherent thread and will make us quite different to many other bands. I'm sure hw will run them by you on Wednesday for your thoughts and opinions. 😃 I await Wednesday with interest!
  17. This. I've tried explaining to my bandmates that when the audience recognise a song, they get a little rush of serotonin (like solving a crossword clue or getting a zero in pointless!) Waddling out the riff or introducing every song both underestimates the intelligence of your audience and throws away such an easy way to help build appreciation.
  18. Sadly I was only 13, only got into going to gigs at about 16/17 and not many 😞
  19. If it gets red and hot, see the doctor about serious antibiotics. That's what I needed.
  20. Is the fuse on the high side (i.e. mains side of the transformer) or between the PSU and the amp or speaker outputs?
  21. I finally (after ages!) tried out my M-vave Cube Baby. I put it through a small 8-inch HH powered speaker (no tone controls) to simulate a 'worst case' di situation. Switching in the IR cabs does change the sound to feel much bigger and more like bass amp. The compressor seems to do a decent job. The tuner is a bit clunky to use but works. Boost seems to add some gentle overdrive. The reverb/ modulation effects are a bit odd, some seem to lack a clean component (maybe bad choice of settings) so a few moments delay before getting an ethereal echo. For price/size it seems a good thing to have in a gig bag as emergency di or to let you use a monitor as a bass amp.
  22. So... you have some jazz chords too?
  23. I've seen tapered ones that look more usable - those look 'strum only'.
