  1. I have had this problem occasionally, I just say to the drummer "I'm not good enough to play this song at this speed" usually does the trick. But adrenaline kicks in and a lot of bands play faster live, listen to live albums, they do play faster than studio versions of the same songs
  2. I've got an the same TE amp, and following a recent discussion about High Pass Filters I have the 30 and 40 Hz sliders at at -15db, cleans up the sound, gets rid of low end grunge, and instead of boosting what you want have you tried cutting what you don't? doesn't look far off one the TE preshapes the way you've got it set
  3. thought so, you're right they don't pay the full whack, might not work at the moment though, the open mic is so popular they can't get all the acts on sometimes and a full band stteing up causes chaos
  4. just in case anybody's not seen the Fender thread https://shop.fender.com/en-GB/electric-basses/precision-bass/player-precision-bass-left-handed/0149822506.html#start=1 at last a MIM lefty precision
  5. bloody hell, maple fingerboard too, very tempting, decent range of colours too, for leftie's
  6. where's that Kev, the Hop Pole?
  7. I know what you mean, but my main gripe with TOTP was the miming, no attempt to even make a decent fist of it, there are a few clips of bands playing live (Bowie doing the Jean Genie is absolute gold) but in the main it was total miming, if we were lucky the singer had to sing live to the backing tape
  8. debatable, depends on the drummer I suppose, but what is not debatable is the fact that a drum machine is a lot less trouble, what's the joke, something about only having to punch it in once? 😃
  9. I really must get round to watching the last two episodes, I'm really glad it's not like the good old days though, when I had to sit though the whole of the Old Grey Whistle in the hope of seeing the odd good act, at least we've got fast forward buttons now, count your blessing you youngsters
  10. that's fine if it's a band that's been going a while and built up a reputation but if it's a new band with not many gigs under their belt it may be worthwhile
  11. of course there's probably just as many bad bass players about as there are drummers, guitarist and singers, the advantage we've got is "who notices the bass player" 😊
  12. one of the best guitar sounds I ever heard was a Glam rock band, the guitarist had a little practice amp cranked right up going through the PA, sounded awesome
  13. I've seen finger players try it without distortion and it sounds awful, you need a lot of distortion and a pick, slow the intro right down with audacity or something like that to get the rhythm, once you've done that it's fairly straight forward apart from the guitar solo, never could figure that out so I just do what sounds right
  14. lots of lefties play right handed because of the availability of guitars, they usually borrow one to start with and it's right handed, more unusual the other way round, I would say try and learn right handed, your predominant hand is your strongest, you may have problems playing fast down the line if you play left handed, and of course, right handed basses are cheaper and more readily available, btw, I'm a leftie that plays left handed
  15. I didn't day he couldn't play quieter I said he didn't want to, pardon, pass the ear plugs, decent drummer though
  16. I've asked our drummer if he could play quieter, he said "yes but it wouldn't be so much fun", well we all want to enjoy ourselves
  17. I'm not giving them chance to find out I might not like the result 😎 as @SpondonBassed says just Drums Bass and Guitar should give enough room for everybody in the sound, I've no wish to play with two guitars, but a good front man who hasn't got the restriction of playing an instrument is worth his/her weight in gold, I know ours works really hard at putting on an entertaining show
  18. just come in from seeing the Ramonas, both the guitarist and Bass player played down strokes all night, I couldn't do it, but it captured the essence of the Ramones
  19. I've seen the Glitter Band twice in about the last ten years, they've gone down a storm when they play GG songs. I think you're missing trick not playing any, just ask the crowd first
  20. I too switched to bass because it seemed an easier way to get into a band, but I first became aware of the what the bass could do listening to Alan Lancaster on the Status Quo albums Hello and Quo, nothing complicated but it made the band rock
  21. I have seen fast fingerstyle players but I can't do it, but I've never tried hard enough, playing in a Punk band there's no incentive, like some others I suspect, I moved over from the darkside so it seemed obvious to me to play with a pick, and all my bass playing heroes play with a pick. As a general rule pick players do cut through the mix better, but not always
  22. I'm eternally grateful to prog, without that self indulgent tedium (IMO of course) we wouldn't have had the perfect antidote, Punk
  23. I'm with Cato on this one, just teach him how to play the songs he likes, trying to teach theory early on is a turn off, it's not until you've learnt some songs that you understand the relevance of it
  24. I suspect he escaped by the skin of his teeth, if the story had come out post Savile he'd have been toast, pre Savile stuff like this was mostly brushed under the carpet, even if it did go to court some kindly judge made sure the verdict was the 'right' one, anyone watch a very English Scandal?
