1. Loud, reliable, compact, flexible - that covers it for me. Can't see me changing my GK700RB 1x15 & Hartke 2.5XL setup anytime soon. Jon.
2.
Exactly what i wanted to know. Thank you mr Twit.
Certainly is - in a 99p, no reserve auction this would fetch about £150. Very nice basses but not worth any £250 - which is doubtless why this one keeps coming back. J.
3. I thought £141 was a bit high for that tbh - looks like the seller probably did too, considering the lower BIN. J.
4. 1mm Dunlop black nylons again - just flexible enough for a bit of feel but stiff enough to dig in hard when necessary. Which is most of the time for me. Jon.
5. That's the first Ritter that's made me smile rather than wince, so that's a start. Futurama version, please. Jon.
6. It's a pity & a wasted opportunity, but it seems to be common for "re-issues" of some of the more idiosyncratic vintage designs to cop out & use generic hardware & components, while simply apeing the style of the real thing. The Epiphone Ripper with its P/J pickups, the Aria Diamond Mosrite lookalike (Eastwood do a version of this too) with J pups & bent tin bridge - even the Yamaha SBV is really just a funny-shaped Jazz & only retains the look of the 60s SB series. I suppose though, these are all fairly budget basses & reproducing original hardware & electronics would probably make them prohibitively expensive - particularly for a target market that is likely a lot more interested in the visual style than authentic detail. Jon.
7. Stupendous bargain for £75! These are probably my favourite Roadstars, love the bound body & Rick-influenced horns. I always though Schecter had these in mind when they came up with this. Jon.
8. This auction is, in my opinion, excellent in every way. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/160559216667 Read the whole listing plus the additional stuff - bloody marvellous! Jon.
9. I have a Korg AX3000B multi-effects, I basically have a "straight" clean sound I use most of the time, little bit of overdrive & compression but nothing obvious. I also have a chorused version of the same sound which I think sounds good on more mellow passages, and a huge distorted, flangy racket sound which is used very briefly on two songs. There are also some nice red lights on the Korg, which I like - and apart from those, that's it. Jon.
10.
do i recognise the headstock shape on this??? http://www.preloved.co.uk/fuseaction-adver...6/5dd19660.html
You might, if you saw this thread. People & facts, always a problem, innit? J.
11. So, what does "L@@K" mean? I've always wondered. J.
12.
Free bump from a Big Country and Stuart Adamson fan.
Ditto - if this was transparent green I'd have a hard time not breaking into my New Bike Fund! Jon.
13.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Satellite-70s-Jazz-b...=item4aa99e2367 I'm guessing that the claim to be MIJ is incorrect, and that this is Korean. Correct?
Yep - I had one, ply body, fairly dodgy fretwork, plastic-button tuners - very basic cheapo J copy. The suggestion that these are "better than a Columbus or Squier" is really quite laughable. J.
14. Broadly - no. JJ Burnel was my first influence but I never hankered after a Precision & haven't really got on with the few I've owned. I was a huge Motorhead fan as a kid, would have loved a Rick at the time but could never have afforded one, when I did get my first "proper" bass (a Washburn B20 Stage) it was because I thought it looked cool as f@ck, and not really any more sensible reason. No-one else played one, and when Pete Way out of UFO started using them it actually put me off a bit, despite the fact I quite liked the band. I do like maple/blocks Jazzes, I'd like to think despite the fact they're associated with Geddy Lee & Dennis Dunaway, who are probably my two biggest influences! I wouldn't play a Geddy Jazz (the black with white plate look is dull & the neck's too skinny) - but would I play a Dunaway sig, if such a thing existed? I might well. Jon.
15.
You misunderstood Jon,im saying exactly that....i got what i consider more than £280 and his looks a better example AND its cased.....trust me i couldnt have been happier with the deal and as ive said a few times here your 100% and would deal with you anytime
Cheers Dougie, just me grabbing the wrong end of the stick! The T-40's a great bass (sitting down!) and I've been more than chuffed with the deal! J.
16. I'm a little bit concerned about what people who find this in their search results were looking for in the first place... Jon.
17.
Understatement much?
Quite so. They still come up from time to time, I still miss 'em... J.
18.
Esp since its hardcased, the deal i done with my T-40 here worked out well in excess of £280....
In all fairness Dougie, your T was in a bit of a state when we did the deal for the Ibanez SR800. Selector switch was snapped off, the bridge pickup wasn't working, tuners were bent, it needed fret-dressing & a setup - as well as a bloody good clean! If you paid a tech to do the work you wouldn't get change out of £100. Worth mentioning that I sold my other SR800 (fretless) here a few years ago for £250 - so I felt the deal we did was more than reasonable. Really hope you don't feel ripped-off, mate. If I moved my T-40 on (which I'm considering, because it's spine-crushingly heavy & I can't gig it) the price would be around £280 - which definitely makes this much more unusual example a bargain in my view - if I hadn't got Dougie's old one I'd be very interested. Jon.
19.
The only id on the bass is the logo on the neck plate which is the same as the VP logo inside the soundhole of this VP acoustic Maybe the plate is the only bit from a VP but it's all there is to go on in the pictures. Got to admit it does look rather nice though.
You're right - same logo. Case closed! Very tidy for a modern cheapy. J.
20.
Doubt it's Japanese - VP are sub £100 far east copies. Can't see a jazz but here's a 6 string on amazon:- vp guitar
I saw this, wouldn't necessarily assume they're related. J.
21. From the same origin as the Peavey Zephyr/Grind ranges I'd say - I have a Zephyr C5 & the body/neck shape & laminations are pretty much identical, really only the headstock's different. Here's one - see what you think: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=63842 Age-wise it'll be 90s/early 00s and probably Korean-made. Jon.
22.
The neck. Everything else can be reasonably easily fixed. Any neck issues - walk away.
+1. Walk - no, run - away from a twisted neck or stuck/unadjustable/overtightened truss rod. Likewise fretboard splits or delaminating skunk stripes, unless the bass is dirt-cheap & you're up for a bit of DIY bodging/experimenting. A bit of fretwear's not a huge problem but badly-worn frets will mean expensive work, nuts are pretty easy/inexpensive to replace. Like Neepheid says, usually everything else is easy-to-fix/replace wood & wire. Jon.
23. Very nice-looking Jazz, unfortunately the VP logo isn't ringing any bells for me. As a first impression I'd doubt it was MIJ, mostly because this is too recent to be a 70s-era copy, and because most Japanese brands (apart from a few exceptions like Fernandes & Tokai) moved away from making copies from around the end of the 70s. It's possible the hardware & electronics may offer some clues to its origin, but with any luck someone here will recognise the neckplate logo. Jon.
24. Made in Japan - built by Fujigen Gakki. Crafted In Japan - built by Dyna Gakki or Tokai Gakki. I have read that basses from Tokai are domestic-market only but don't know if this is the case for certain. Either way, quality standards from Japanese factories are uniformly high so neither's "better" than the other. Jon.
25.
Are you positive this bass is very old? The only reason I ask is that kind of bridge/bridge positioning has appeared on some of the recent/more modern 'Fakers. Some of the old ones (like mine) are pretty much accurate copies, some of the newer ones are more "variation on a theme". Karl.
I am. It's 70s, early 80s at the latest. Tomb - be patient, keep bumping the thread - stuff seldom sells overnight on here, particularly Fakers. And remember a lot of people are pretty skint at the moment! J.
