I'd never seen/heard Hodgkinson....just been watching this Cool as hell!
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jRUjH1zAcZA&...feature=related I play left handed and it freaks me out seeing other lefties, this is good.
  2.
Why do people want to buy instruments that make it look as though they don't give a f*** about them?
Because they get sucked into marketing machines..... sorry, no, because they have choices. Choices to be sheeeeeeeep.
  3.
Well, I've heard it's just a jump to the left, followed by a step to the right, and then with your hands on your hips, you bring your knees in tight...
You bastard, I've just woken the Missus up laughing, so you are on my list now.
  4.
Well, I've heard it's just a jump to the left, followed by a step to the right, and then with your hands on your hips, you bring your knees in tight...
People, you have just witnessed Basschat Gold.
  5.
Incognito, superb. been trying to nail "Colibri" from Tribes,Vibes & Scribes for about 50 years now. Got the notes, got the speed, got the groove. Just can't seem to keep it going for what feels like 20 minutes. Ha ha.
Vibe, weed, press play. I don't imbibe combustables anymore but this kind of music was a beautiful comedown to Plastik Man, Secret Knoweledge, Sabres of Paradise, Black Dog, Underworld, Ultramarine, Fluke, Derek May, I feel another thread coming on.
  6.
Sorry, you get the total package......Great player ,great f***ed up beliefs...Its like Lemmy,I dont want to be in a room with the guy.
Who would you like to be in a non threatening environment with? Would you just walk out when these people started to talk or would you try and connect with them in some kind of way? We all wear badges of some discription to show others who we think we are but we should all be cool with each other, I'm suprised you wouldn't want to meet Lemmy, or are you scared that he is too rock for you? My ex met him in Buckley once and asked him for his "Wartagraph", he went for her and I pushed him away, we got kicked out...True.
  7.
Peter Hook a total dickhead, looks and plays bass like a total t*at. Colin Hodgkinson has been setting high standards for many years, listen to some material from Back Door. The guy out of the Blockheads......awesome.
That's a bit harsh.... ....not knowing that Norman Watt-Roy is the bassist in the Blockheads.
  8. Hi ARGH I edited this post many times so as not to include his scientology beliefs but a lot of people believe in nothing much and don't hold life very dear. I personally don't want to air an opinion on such matters and would rather this thread be about his playing and music. PM me if you want. Steve.
  9. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=QCGKpAqSVgI&...feature=related I have watched this a few times and I like his honesty, integrity, his playing and he is such a humble man. I like his Niacin stuff but 9 Short Films, Compression and Cosmic Troubador show a dark a different side to his playing.
  10.
Ah, you've got to lock the bridge (use the allen key on the side lock) first....
Ned is an innovator par excellence, I have the same set up on my headless, what a great bridge he designed.
  11.
Reading this thread has made me feel so much better about my plastic card bill that has just come today with quite a bit of this years acquisitions on ... because my GAS is obviously well under control it seems. IN this year was... 1957 Gibson ES 225 1939 Gibson ES 150 'Charlie Christian' Late 1930s ('38 0r '39) Gibson EH 150 amp (still works fine!) OUT this year was... Nothing (my mantra is 'you buy instruments - you don't sell 'em!')
Pics, pics, please.
  12.
After a brief spell in bands in my late teens I only played bedroom bass for 20 years. I was rubbish. I have made leaps and bounds since joining a band three years ago. Its the only way to develop your musicality, timing and confidence IMHO. I still struggle with scales (apart from major, I mean whats the difference between melodic minor and minor????!) but doesn't really hold me back.
Do you mean the relative minor coming off the 6 th note of a major scale?
  13. Agreed.
  14. What's the difference between Relic and Road Worn?...about a grand probably. "This guitar has seen its share of smokey bars", total utter lies. You can have the guitar to go with your distressed jeans, all the hard work of actally living an interesting life where you sometimes take risks and get a little knock here and there has now been all taken care of for you. WoT, I don't want them to go out of business but how much longer will they carry on diluting the magic of the brand? It seems totally perverse that a guitar is finished to a good standard and then knocked about a little to simulate player wear, the owner should be responsible for any "player wear" and have the memories to go with each knock and scratch.
  15.
For me this sums it all up perfectly. I don't think the quantity of strings is an issue - the vast majority of guitarists have 6 strings, and therefore all have the same opportunity to create art or self-indulgent w*nkery as they see fit. For me the issue is distinguishing the concept of 'solo bass' from that of the 'bass solo'. I tend to regard 'solo bass' as a format through which bass players can create their own music without the need for other band members, which shifts their role into that of musician rather than 'just' bass player. I don't believe that solo bass playing has to necessarily be equated with a vast quantity of notes-per-second, although this is entirely dependent on the player. When I hear Michael Manring, I hear music, not chops: Conversely, when I hear Wooten or Adam Nitti, I hear technique, not music. My personal preference, regardless of the instrument, is to be intrigued by melody and harmony, not be intimidated by technique.
Check out the guy watching at 1 min 25 sec (I love you Michael, can I have your babies?). It is a very imaginative and skillfuly executed piece and it would be very intesting to see him play this through a massive PA at say Creamfields with maybe Underworld putting some elecrtonic textures in the background. "The young of the beaver stay with the mother until around 12 months, at which time they travel downstream to find a mate. Once a suitable mate has been found, a complex courtship begins with the male beaver saying "I've got two tickets for a Michael Manring solo performance, I was wandering if you would like to go?" Rejected, with severe injuries, the male beaver has to travel further downstream in search of a soul mate."
  16. The ABM cabs are made of birch ply and are not too heavy, the MAG cabs I think are MDF or partical board. I would recommend the ABM stuff but I haven't tried the MAG gear so I can't say if one sounds better than the other. I have used an ABM combo and an ABM cab and they were ok. When you go to PMT are you going to take your own combo to try with the cabs? When you mention the cab can handle 350 watts, that's all well and good, it is the sensitivity and frequency responses that you should pay some attention to but as thousands of people have said millions of times before, try with your ears. What you are doing seems to be spot on, good luck and I hope the MAG cabs work out, I'm sure they will.
  17. I thought her particular shackles belonged to the rhythm.
  18. Herbie Flowers?
  19. John Wilson who played with Heaven 17, anyone?

    Cables
Make your own, wayyyyy cheaper than anything else I make my own
Same here, get a load of angled jacks, some decent cable and have a night in of joyous fun.
  21. I have a Glockenklang Duo 2x12" cab with Volts and it sounds fantastic, very satisfying right through the frequency range and an amazing amount of tight bass from such a small cab.
  22.
So I got a good hunk of cash for christmas, and have been wanting to upgrade the pickups in my MIM Jazz for some time now. Right now, I play with the both pickups on full all the time, and i want a big, full, in your face kinda sound that cuts through the mix, and is possibly a little bit gritty (though i can get that with OD pedal). What would you guys recommend? Nothing crazy expensive, but I'm willing to drop a bit of cash if it'll improve the tone of my bass.
EMG's are quiet, powerful and full of tone.
  23. I put Status flats (40-100) on my P bass and was pleased with the quality of them, not too tight, really well made and they sound great.
  24. Hi AM you say that when you were younger you use to go to the library for sheet music, do you read music? If you can then you should be able to get a good idea of the basslines you are after by listening back to the tracks then writing out chord charts for each song, once you have the key of each song and the chord progressions, writing the bassline should be straight forward, that and a good bit of using your ear to check. Tab on the internet is notoriously bad and offers little in the way of being able to play a bassline correctly. Good luck.
  25. awwwww. Happy New Year, I hope you get a Kingbass Mk II.
