1. On a similar vein, does anyone know of any "General Band" type forums? I know most opics are touched on in the various bits of this forum, I was thinking more about the whole band dynamic, getting gigs, getting backdrops made, finding a producer / accountant / insurance, etc.?
2. What's the most common tuning people use on these then? E-E? or something silly starting in B?
3. I tried plugging into my laptop once, but my jack didn't fit... I use PC speakers for the backing track, and amp for me - I can barely hear it over the neighbours dog / teenage daughter
4. How long is this tour?! Could you take it as annual leave, and use you're office job to fund it?
5. Make the easy bits look hard, and the hard bits look easy....
6. I love my HA3500. My two anecdotes to prove the love: I wrote off an Audi A3 in a horrific crash with my HA3500 on board, it was pulled from the wreckage and was fine. The last gig I played was an outdoor tent, no mic or DI for me, just head and cab (Marshall 4x10 600w) and I got a noise complaint from some Police officers in Alconbury. Which I was quite proud of as the amp was in Sawtry
7. Fantastic advice above! The only tip I can even think of adding: Do one rehearsal where you're all set up in a typical "Stage" layout. You dont want to find out you always got a visual cues from a drummer that you now have your back to on stage! I found out I get very aggressive / clumsy with my headstock, so am now always positioned on the left where I can't hit anyone with it, especially on a little stage.
8. How do you even begin to compare Kurt, Jimmy, Keith, Gene, Jim, etc.? Answer: You cant. The only thing we can all agree on is that Kanye is a prick.
9. Might be my age, but I thought they were terrible. Looking at it from a "If I saw them up my local" point of view instead of a "I know they're rock royalty" point of view.... If I saw them play like that up my local, I'd go home early for a few tinnies - Just sloppy has-beens resting on their fame laurels Really disappointing after seeing some decent performances by them not too long ago (Superbowl etc.)
10. How was my gig last night? Awesome! We played the Summer Solstice event at Moonhenge. I’m a practicing pagan, so was really looking forward to the celebrations and seeing the venue anyway and it didn’t disappoint. It was quite an expensive ticket (£30) but around 400 people happily parted with their hard earned. There were three folk acts before us, so IP was a bit nervous about how we’d fit in (Marilyn Manson meets surf….). I was amazed when we launched into our first song how many camera phones went up and started flashing away, or stayed up their filming! The view of the henge from the stage was amazing, our set finished at 21:21 the exact time that the sun set through the centre of the henge. We were so appreciated by the crowd I had a permanent grin on my face for our whole set. OK… There were two glitches…. After our third song we received a noise complaint from the Police Station in the next town… we were quite proud that it was from a different district that we were playing, but we duly turned down. I didn’t really notice (due to the size of the site) but I heard afterwards that someone had lost their hand during our set…. There was a viking re-enactment thing earlier that day, and while the mead was freely flowing someone had an accident with a sword and lost their hand. So overall, yeah best gig ever (for me). The photos of us look a bit crappy as the stage was covered by a marquee thingy, so its always gonna look like a tent. Yours truly: The henge around 4 hours after we played (Not my photo)
11.
Saw this once at a comedy club, the comic held up his hands for quiet, looked straight at heckler and said "let's all wait for her to think up a really good heckle". Everyone looked at heckler who was so embarrassed she left
I would have gone with: "If you want my come back, you'll have to scrape it off your mums teeth first"
12. That face tho....
13. Hey Basschatters! We're playing the main stage at Moonhenge in Cambridgeshire for the Summer Solstice celebrations, this Saturday 20th June. We're on at 20:30. £30 a ticket, camping available. Details: http://www.paganfed.org/index.php/component/content/article?id=85
14.
bog roll definate. i wouldn't bother taking your camera, just use your phone given the space you are in it will more than do the job and just saves less space and faffing around
Gasp! Be gone with ye! That's my stripped down camera bag! Besides the studio is in a rough area, there's bound to be something derelict local!
15.
Don't put more effort into photographing the event than the event itself!
Lol, true! Although I was hoping that the documenting would fill some of my 'down time' A lot of emphasis on fruit and bog roll!
16.
Also take a couple of proper physical books to read. It's easier on the eyes than reading off a screen for hours.
I hadn't even considered that. Excellent advice!
Is it just recording by the way or are you going to come out of the session with a finished product?
I'll just be involved with the recording (Days 1-3) I'm entrusting the band to approve the production / mastering on days 4 & 5. I'll hopefully get emailed some Mp3s on the last day. Yeah the deal involves some physical products at the end, but I’m assuming they’ll take a while to produce (They will be coloured 12” vinyls, as well as CDs)
17.
Bass, Beer, Porn... job done
Lol, that was the exact rider we had for recording our first EP!
18. Yeah, lots of plans for if I get that call! I'm actually only 1Hr 20 from the hosp, so not that far from home really. I'm also putting £200 in an envelope for an emergency taxi in case I've had a drink! That said we'll have 5 cars between us, and the keyboard player is tee total! So fingers crossed the baby wont come on those 2.5 days! I will be the first in the band to have a kid, so yeah has been hard trying to keep August free of gigs! But in terms of bass, our band has a 'substitute' who can cover bass, drums, or guitar. Eek tho!
19.
Bottled water Rennies Fruit juice Toilet roll Hand Sanitizer A music stand (seriously - useful for the notepad, pens etc) Lots of patienc And details of the studio landline number, just in case the baby decides to make an appearance!!!
You've done this before! Yeah, I think bottled water and bog roll will deffo be added to the list...just in case!
20.
Straighteners? Really?
Lol, straightners picked up before make up?!
A good book. Always a lot of sitting around in that sort of situation. Probably worth a thread of its own as to which book...
I was thinking books / mags, but didn't know how anti-social that is! might have to bring something lighthearted & inspirational Cheers!
What's a leatherman ? Band uniform ?
Oh a Leatherman is like a multi-tool. Yeah we have a band uniform (Red and black stripes, ala Dennis The Menace - http://static.wixstatic.com/media/10121c_ba7a8a2e718857cf09d17f118ef0e8ff.jpg_512) Cheers everyone, keep the suggestions coming!
21. Was thinking of some fruit snack bars, but am generally planning on getting food locally. Oh and for the glaring omission of an amp, I'll be going straight into the tape recorder (or whatever they use now) using an amp simulator.
22. So: we've scored a record deal, and we've been invited to a studio to record for a week. I will only be going for 3 days as I'm struggling to get the time off work, and have a heavily pregnant wife I'm worried about being apart from. We'll be staying in a hotel close to the studio, so I'm treating it as a bit of a mini-break from life. 23. The patch on this one is to run the extension lead to the Kitchen. You're welcome.

25. I'm assuming in this situation they are envisaging each band to set up their vocal PA in roughly the same time it takes them to set up their amps? (It'd take me longer to set up a single speaker stand than it would my whole rig! )
