1. I had these bad boys, they came in a little see through, plastic case. 2. When I was playing only guitar, I used to find bridge 'buckers way too honky, but Strat/Tele bridge pickups too shrill. Enter the mighty P90 . To be fair, there are so many pickups out there which are voiced differently, you can produce pretty much anything tonewise with different magnets and coils. Case in point, the pickups on my Tele are standard Tele size, hum cancelling (humbuckers), but voiced like P90s.
  3.
Oh how very considerate of you.
I like to be the voice of reason
  4. The OP then asked for some guidance, "Anyone got any suggestions that may change my mind?" which I feel shows his openness to being swayed in his initial take on JP's playing. That sounds pretty open minded to me and the point of the thread, which has been met (numerous suggestions having been offered). Maybe we should now wait and see if, after subsequent listening, the OP thinks any differently.
  5. I remember pitch pipes, unfortunately! Who thought that they were a good idea? A tuning fork for one string and then tune to that was the smart way to go, not that anyone told me at the time. I must've gone onto tuning to records pretty quickly (it's a long time ago). The first electronic tuner was truly a 'Concorde' moment. Haven't looked back since, although I still tune to recordings if they're off, for learning purposes.

  7. It almost seems that having that to use your phone is the main selling point, whilst I see it as an unnecessary interface. Why not just have the whole thing in one unit?
  8. I've never read anything but total love for Bobby Vega on these and other pages. A guy with a unique voice, whether using pick, fingers or thumb. I do love it when he starts chugging with a pick and his legs join in - the epitome of groove.
  9. There were many suggestions of Jaco's playing with various others rather than just solo or with Weather Report for the OP to sample. From that, he'll be able to view his original take on JP's playing in a new light and see if his opinion is changed by the new exposure. Pretty much what I thought he was after. Watch this space I guess.
  10.
I'm looking at an Ibanez Baritone, maybe next year some time. They can be had for less than that, around £450 anyway: http://www.andertons.co.uk/solid-body-electric-guitars/pid31907/cid671/ibanez-rgib6-iron-label-baritone-electric-guitar-in-black.asp
I just did a basic search for some baritones to see if such things existed at that budget. It seems they do. I didn't mean to imply the OP's rhythm player should buy from either of the two establishments I linked to.
  11.
Maybe there's a kind Rick player near you, who would offer you a try of theirs?
Great idea, I'd be open for a visit to try my 4003s
  12. There has been a wrist slapping, can we appear to be less smug please, lest we feel Ped's displeasure also?
  13.
Good luck in your search. Let us know how you get on. And ignore comments from those who hate them It's your money, it's your choice
Very much the above. Either way, it'll be an interesting voyage of discovery.

  15. Stability problems with FRs can be minimised by flat loading them, so only down bend is possible and fitting all 5 springs. However, if it isn't going to used much, I wouldn't buy something where part of the cost is eaten up by a mostly redundant piece of hardware. I like the suggestion of a baritone guitar. There is a Fender Tele http://www.guitarsound.co.uk/fender-blacktop-telecaster-baritone-rosewood-classic-copper-for-sale?gclid=COCY-sT2zskCFUoUwwodoDwNcw and an Ibanez http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/electric_guitars_detail.asp?stock=13120714083658 that fall within the budget and would do the job well.

  19.
No arm chamfer = Pain when you're use to Basses that have them (they're there for a reason!). Also some songs were played with a pick and I kept catching my pick on the pickup surround which is MASSIVE and stands proud of the body.
The joy of the S version; smooth edges. I don't find the surround a nuisance, but I did find that, with the cover removed, I'd occasionally catch my fingers on the exposed edges, sometimes so much I thought I'd cut myself. Fortunately, Rickysounds sell a bezel which prevents this, it isn't cheap though But you can ditch the whole thing completely with a flat, chrome plate that I saw a while back, it might've come from Retrovibe.
  20.
Some say he's a guitar god, others think a lot of his work borders on unlistenable.
Like many here, I'm a guitarist turned bass player and my opinion on Hendrix that he was a mix of both extremes presented above. I wasn't a fan at the time (I was a Clapton devotee) but I know who I'd prefer to listen to now; well at least the listenable stuff . If you're not a rock fan, Hendrix' contribution might not be evident, in the same way as Jaco if you're not into that genre of jazz (a genre within a genre?). But, as I've said before, the general consensus among the great and the good is that these two were revolutionary and 'changed everything' (for a value of everything), therefore they must have something. The key thing is, you don't have like that something. I'm not a Jaco fan, but I do like players who cite him as a huge influence (Pino and Norman Watt-Roy) so I maybe I like Jaco secondhand. The thing here is to listen and make your own mind up. Not liking someone who is regarded as genius does not make you a bad player or person. Maybe that difference will make that person into the 'next big thing', I wouldn't betting JH and JP disliked some of their era's heroes, which inspired them to be different. And there is the key word - different. No one would ever say that weren't different. Now returning to the squabbling that seems to be prevalent in some threads..... Best tuner pedal

Another Pitch Black user here, I've has mine from when they were first released, never a day's aggro: clear display, accurate (low B included), mutes. To be honest, there probably isn't much between the popular models, you pick the one you like the look of best and has the features you like.
  22.
it's a shame you feel the need to respond in the aggressive and self-righteous manner that you have, it's people like you that tarnish forums for others. Before I even said anything I stated that music is subjective, ergo, this is purely my opinion. I've been completely honest about my opinion and then as you can see, I've asked for suggestions that might change my mind because I'm always open to a fresh perspective. I figured this was the best platform to express my current point of view in the hopes that it might be changed, not for people like you to say I shouldn't be playing bass or that I'm deeply ignorant because I'm not currently a fan of one specific player.
Because some folks don't read the instructions on the tin http://basschat.co.uk/topic/3178-forum-guidelines/
  23. With so many of the great and good of bass world (beyond the walls of BC) hailing Jaco, it is hard to pretend his impact wasn't huge. However, for me, his playing doesn't do it for me because of the genre. Yes his work with Joni was nice enough, but for my tastes (which seem to coincide with CamdenRob's in this regard) the whole thing leaves me a bit cold.
I couldn't really pick out a melody or groove. Guess I'm just conditioned to cycles of riffs etc... I am a man of simple tastes
Which is why, I guess, I prefer Stanley Clarke, to me, it's just more accessible, given my musical sensibilities. http://www.youtube....h?v=hrnI7TQ44U0 And now with the marvellous Jeff Beck http://www.youtube....h?v=cOaAZlrt6II EDIT: I don't understand why the videos only show as links?
  24. Rush - Gold is a pretty good 'best of' that will take you up to Hold Your Fire, IIRC.
