  1. Why not continue with the TE legacy and go Ashdown?

  5. Trade in values are always going to be low, the shop will want to turn some profit on it (despite making a profit on the bass you’re buying) and then they have to pay VAT. Private sales are always the best way forward, as the shops will tell you. BC is a great place to sell, as you’re hitting your key demographic and is populated by a great bunch of folk. However, a third way is a commission sale through a shop, this way the onus for delivery is on the shop and you should see your bass on their website. I’ve used The Gallery in Camden for 3 items (15% commission) and can recommend them if you’re anywhere near them.

  8. The advantage with this suggestion is that you’re not limited only to companies that were producing in the ‘50s - ‘80s (I believe instruments from the ‘80s are becoming more in vogue; Elite P Bass anyone?), newer builders become a choice, which also widens the choice of designs too.

  11. Vintage instruments, provided they were built well in the first place, have a lovely feel to them and, if old enough, the magnets in the pickups may have degaussed somewhat, adding some tonal magic. These things are also able to be recreated with roadworn builds fitted with vintage voiced pickups. I’ve owned a ‘63 P Bass and 2 roadworn builds (a P and a Mustang) and the RWs hit the mark for me in terms of that feel and tone. However, real vintage instruments do have that caché, if you’re into the kind of thing and have deep pockets (Lady Ez encouraged me to buy the ‘63 as it was a good investment, long since realised).

  15. Without wanting to make @mcnach hurl even more 🤮, what about cream/aged pearloid, that’d go nicely with the maple.
  16. Gone Fishing - Bing Crosby
  17. Yet, you are not surprised and a little part of you is glad that some things can be relied on 😉.

  19. My new JMJ Mustang had a weird resonance on the open A and 12th fret harmonic. I went all over it trying to find the source. It turned out it was emanating from the nut slot. A quick pass with an nail Emery board fixed it.
  20. I’m a Tech21 fanboy, so I’d say the Behringer BDI 21 is a great place to start and will also cover recording duties. Then, if you like what it does, you could upgrade to a full on BDDI or VTDI.
  21. Cousin Dupree - Steely Dan
  22. To be honest, there’s nothing wrong with my Maruszczyk bag other than it being somewhat wide in the body. I think it’s a combination of liking a bag/case that hinges up to a big reveal (like my Protection Racket) and lockdown ennui.
  23. Seven Nation Army - White Stripes
  24. Move Closer - Phyllis Nelson
  25. Just revisiting this, the TGI Extreme from Bass Direct measures 106.5cm internally. Given the Mustang is only 1.5cm longer, you’d think it would fit with a bit forming at each end. Just £39 plus postage. I’m tempted.
