    The black makes the purple pop as @Aidan63 said above, rather than the p/g being the standout feature, so black would be my choice.

    I've learnt plenty of songs for various bands that never saw a gig or only made it into the wild once. Sometimes things don't work. I've even learnt entire set lists for one off, dep gigs and never played the songs again. Yes, it can be irritating, but it's focussed practise that only serves to make you a better player. I have a gig with a new band coming up and I've learnt all the songs they sent me. Turns out that we didn't have enough songs for the initial gig and some numbers have been thrown in for padding, two of which will not be played by this band again as they are off genre (harrumph!). Add to that these two songs are by a band I have little or no interest in. Nonetheless, it has been good practising them as it has sharpened my ears and reminded me that online TABs are often wrong and really wrong.

    This is true ^^^. Another way to approach it is to record a bass line along to something and play with the compression settings to see how it affects your place in the mix. It was this that turned me into a compression pedal user. I was adding a bass part to a collaboration and sent a mix to good friend of mine who runs a sound reinforcement company and who also writes and records music. He suggested some compression setting for my bass track, which I tried and it made a subtle, but very pleasing difference. I went out, bought a compressor and use it at the end of my signal chain to mimic these same settings. I have posted this tale of my compressor conversion in other threads.

    WHAT? That's crazy! My preferred EB Cobalt flats aren't cheap, but they're 'only' £60 a set for a 5 string.

    Very much this ^^^. I'm having a couple of days off from my aids as they're being uncomfortable (I have small, sensitive ear canals). I've found that the tuning done to my NHS hearing aids is a bit loud and shrill (this is, of course, compared to what I've grow used to with my diminished hearing at the top end and overall) and overemphasises the sibilants in people's speech, especially on the TV. So I've come up with my own program, via the bluetooth app, that makes this more 'natural'. However, when I play the skinny stringed thing or listen to our small radio, I get feedback at certain frequencies, so I also have a 'guitar' program that cuts the top end even more. Both of these programs still improve my hearing, but in a way that's more pleasing to the official, default settings. I mentioned these shortcomings and custom alterations to my audiologist and she, very sensibly, said that it's my hearing and what works for me is right for me.

    They have a mute system in the bridge, which, of course, is a PITA to use quickly, so quite possibly.

    Very much this ^^^ It's a right of passage for playing a stringed instrument. Also @itu makes a very good point about material sensitivity. The D'Addarios you're using are pretty soft feeling by my reckoning, but are nickel plated, as are EB Slinkys (very similar strings IMO) and your issue may lay here (although I'd expect fretting hand issues too). After long, heavy playing sessions, I would often find my plucking fingers became sore, so would revert to a pick for the rest of that session and revert back to finger style next time around. However, when I changed to EB Cobalt flats, this was never an issue and the joy of these, price notwithstanding, is that they pretty much retain that roundwound sound and I never found them to be sticky, unlike other flatwounds I have used. Like others have said above, I would avoid Rotosounds as I too have found them to be very rough in comparison to others. The same for any stainless steel ones I have used (although I have not tried many). It may just be a case of playing more often, but for less time and building up your calluses.

    @Lowhead Congrats on your new acquisition, let the fun begin! The thing I seemed to spend a lot of time getting right was the height of the thing. Because of it being fixed on the tripod, there’s none of the pulling it towards you and cosying up to it like you would do with a DB (I tried it ‘floating’ for a bit, but have gone back to fixed) However, once I got it right for me (I suspect everyone will be different in this respect), it became easier to play and my intonation improved. Altering my fingering from where I would play mid neck on an EB, to more towards the nut on the WAV and incorporating more open strings has been another step forward. I was initially a bit disappointed with my progress, but I’m a lot happier now and think that the WAV (or at least the move to upright) is a keeper. I tend to play with the switch in the up position (which I believe is primarily for arco), having the tone control halfway and scooping the low mids on my amp. This gives me the sound I’m looking for and sounds more DB than fretless EB to my ears and produces a nice thump on the note.

    Feline Guitars are a custom builder based in Croydon, headed up by Jonathon Law. I had some dealings with them many years ago when I was local to them.
