1. It's a bit hard to say really, it looks in proportion to the neck. I don't like the '5 in row' headstock. It'd look a lot better with a '4 and 1'.
2. My only 'niggle' is the fact that they don't do a straight ahead jazz bass.
3. Yeah, I've been looking at them recently. I need a 4 string bass for teaching, one of these is high on my list.
4. D'Addario or maybe Overwater, Status do some nice ones too. I use Overwater nickels on my 6 string basses, they're about £22 per set, which is very reasonable, and they're very nice strings. What's the point in putting on something really cheap when they sound awful and/or die quickly. I think you need to be a bit careful with strings. You can buy cheap and end up with something rubbish, but spend a couple of pounds more and get something 20 times better.
5.
Er yeah, Vic is quite a short guy but he's built like the proverbial outdoor latrine - I found this cool pic ages ago that demonstrates just how strong he is - no Photoshop involved here: He's still one of my fave players, if not my overall fave bass player of all time... been listening to him for 20 years and I still love all that he does.
I've seen that photo before, how does he do that ?
6. A luthier . I'm very attached to my fingers.
7. I have never heard of Little Tommy Tucker (didn't he stand in the corner doing something with his thumb ?). I have never heard of Justin Beiber either though, as mentioned in another thread .
8.
I play music to play live, if I had to play sh*te then I'd rather do that than work in a supermarket.
So very true . Music is music at the end of the day.
9.
I have to confess, I've never heard of Scott Surine! Lol... A quick google search shows I've been missing out! Bump.
There was a rather cool looking Surine advertised on here a few years ago. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...8&hl=surine
10. I just had to google Justin Beiber to find out who he is. I've never heard of him before. Just goes to show I should get out more, and maybe listen to the radio lol.
11. I play for the money, it's my job Who's Justin Bieber ? I think you're missing the point though. My Dad's always said that my job is the same as a golfer or footballer, without the riches mind you. I get paid for doing what I love to do, which is to play music. I don't really care whether that's country and western, 70's funk or trad jazz, it's all music. Every genre of music had its soul, it's down to you to find it.
12.
Hypothetically, how would one get the dimensions tailored for yourself if you don't know anything about neck dimensions? I've always wondered that! Off the peg stuff is easiest for me, as i can't travel far and know nuthin' 'bout nuthin' of techy stuff and i'd be all silly about body shapes haha I've played a 7 string, custom made (not sure who by, i think the guy may have made it him self) and it felt comfertable enough to me and i'donly be able to describe it as far as "thin" haha I have a feeling a custom 7 string Shuker would run past £2k or atleast mine probably would haha!
Basically they'd just give you a couple of basses to try, you'd be able to say if you like the neck shape etc. They'd be able to adjust the shape that you do like, making it wider, narrower etc. I'd try Robbie at RIM basses. I think his basses look amazing, he's definitely top of my list for my next bass. I think his prices are a bit more competitive than other builders too. Another builder to consider is Overwater. Their prices are more than the others mentioned though, but I can really recommend the build quality, the basses just ooze class. Most builders are accessible by train or coach.
13. You always seem to have some really beautiful and unusual basses for sale. I'd love this one .
14. That's really interesting, thanks . I'm going to have a bit of fun experimenting, they're pretty cheap so I'll get a couple of each type. I'm really rubbish at soldering though, thanks for the tips ! I got it all over the place yesterday, and burned the floor in two places too.
15. I love the grain on the top, and how it shows through the beautiful sunburst. I'm possibly going to be after a Jazz bass later in the year. An Overwater would be very nice !
16. As an extended range bass player (6 string is my main bass). I strongly recommend approaching someone like Robbie at RIM basses, or Jon Shuker. Their instruments are great, and very reasonably priced. I played a Conklin GT 7 string bass a couple of years ago. It was very nice, but not as comfortable to play as it could have been. You need the neck profile and dimensions to be good for you. If it isn't then you'll very quickly run into problems playing it. By going to someone like Robbie or Jon, you'd be able to tailor the bass to how you want it. You'd be involved with the build.
17. Bump.
18. Following on from my earlier thread - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=132709 I bought a couple of these here - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...p;hl=capacitors I went for the green ones. I've kind of fitted them as instructed by the very helpful Silent Fly, I've soldered one each between the two wires from the pickups. I will get them properly soldered next week by someone who knows what they're doing, I'm really rubbish at soldering. The result is quite pleasing, and has removed a lot of the harsh brightness that I disliked. It's certainly 'warmed' up the sound. I was wondering what difference fitting other capacitors would make ? There are these here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...T#ht_2802wt_759 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-x-047uF-400v-SPRAG...a#ht_2802wt_759
19. I've never had a problem with ordering from them. Maybe it's the actual postal service ?
20.
What band was it ? we were on the bill too.
Cajun Moon, we were first on. I watched your set from the side of the stage sat next to the sound man.
21.
Thanks bud. They are utterly stunning. One of best fretless basses I've played, with a very even tone. They are a little odd though and so many people would pass them up. maybe this should be in the bass rather than EUB section... After all it's a 34" scale fretless, but cam be played upright style...
It was the 'oddness' that attracted me to it. The sound is amazing too though .
22. I'm not a great fan, though I do like Emmy Lou Harris, her album with Mark Knopfler is excellent. I did some gigs with a Country band last year. It was actually really good fun. The gigs are generally really well attended, and the audience dance all the way through, you get some slightly odd people there though. I did a big festival up in Yorkshire with them, that was really good. http://www.copperkettlefestival.co.uk/
23. I played one of these a few years ago at the Gallery. Fantastic basses !
24. Some photographs.
