1. The title of this thread makes me wonder what some one will post if they happen to break a nut... 😉
  2. I clicked on this thread thinking somebody had shipped a Status bass packaged only in string... How very dissapointed I am!
  3. I dont know any bass players off the top of my head that play MTD. Which is strange given that their top level instruments are rather pricey. I would have absolutely no idea what an MTD is supposed to sound like. Compare that to say Fodera, Warwick, Fender, Sadowsky, Pedulla, Rickenbacker etc. and you see where I am going with this...
  4.
The business card does the job, but i like to use several tools when doing my setups I use feeler gauges, understring Radius Gauges, and astring action ruler
I was half expecting a joke about G Strings and feelers in there, very dissapointed....
  5.
You may be thinking of feeler gauges; a set of very thin metal 'shims' of various thicknesses which slide between the string and the fretboard. Here's a pic...
These can be had cheaply from screwfix or ebay and I think they are vital to getting your bass setup as well as possible. I also live by this guys guide to setting up your bass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te44eWXd9pc&t=24s
  6. I really love the look of it and it certainly seems to have had plenty of time and effort put in to the build as well as qualty materials, hardware etc. When you look at the price some of the exotic/boutique bases change hands for these days I dont think the price is too unrealistic except that it is missing the name like Fodera or Ritter.
  7.
Finally bit the bullet and got around the stripping my bass and sanding down the body. Luckily the blemishes were only in the lacquer which were removed after sanding down with a 1500 and 2000 grit sandpaper. I used Dartford's satin clear lacquer which created the desired finish. I also upgraded the hardware to gold as an homage to an FNA Jazzman i once saw. I'm still contemplating whether the nut upgrade is worth it though. Also, any sources for gold neck screws and pickup switches would be greatly appreciated! And advice on the control knob fitments, currently they are not sitting flush, is it a simple ase of useing a narrower nut to secure the pot?
Drop me a PM, I can almost certainly help with the gold screws - they are from Warwick btw! I might also be able to loan you a brass just-a-nut as well for you to try.
  8.
I messaged the seller,to point out that I thought it was an Encore, having owned a few over the years. He said he had had the guitar over 10 years, paid about 300 for it and ''had never been sure'' thats why he had not listed it as a Fender. Went on to say it had been in a couple of shops over the years for set ups and they have never questioned it. Certainly plays and sounds like a Fender. ...Well,as I said,I owned a few of these made in India guitars. To be honest, they are good enough and sound fine. Well built,a bit heavy. I thought after giving him the info,he would have seen that the guitar is worth £40 to about £100 not over £400 that the current bid was.I was hoping he might have altered the listing at least, but no.....Reported it to ebay. Seeing as how he started the bid at £450 and wasn't sure about it being a Fender just seems bull sh*t!
He is definitely lying. No way it's been near a shop for a setup and come back with the intonation like that!
  9.
Cant get my head around why someone so successful and talented, who obviously has a loving family would take their own life at 52. Its very sad, and confusing.
That's mental health issues in a nutshell. too most people they are so hard to grasp that those suffering from them feel even more isolated and misunderstood.
  10. And what is it covering??? What is going on with the back of the body?
  11. Yet another example of intonation being an unknown to most....
  12.
Smart meters automatically send the reading back to the energy supplier. No need for a guy to actually come to your house to read the numbers. S.P.
Are you sure about that? My understanding is they can be read remotely but only by a person coming round to your property. The idea being that the person doesn't need to enter the property. But a bit like blutooth or Wi-Fi you need to within a certain proximity of the device to read the data from the device. I just can't see how else they would work without piggy backing into the homeowners Wi-Fi but that would be a real can of worms.
  13.
Take comfort from the fact he'll be out of a job soon, when everyone has smart meters.
yeah, because smart meters read themselves!
  14. wtf is you not saying something the moment he walks towards your basses? take some ownership here. obviously his behaviour is out of line but the moment he crosses that line say 'excuse me but those are mine and I dont want you touching them, epsecially if you are going to treat them like that'. I would report him to whomever provides your gas or electric.
  15.
Good point. Maybe those here with no documents should create a set of documentary evidence for identifying our collection of "keepers" and get a friendly solicitor, policemen or similar to sign as a witness that on x-date you are/were the owner of this bass(es).
A sensible practice would be too scan copies of these documents to yourself at both your personal and work email address. that way, if someone breaks in to your house and steals your basses and your PC then you can still access the details when you login to either email account.
  16. I get a sense looking at this and many other used basses for sale on ebay, and even some here on BC, that not many bass players seem to know what intonation is...
  17.
This guy doesn't have a background in advertising, does he?
To be fair, they are that ugly that even if he didnt it would still be a hard sell!
  18. It has actually happened on my old Warwick Streamer, slighly radiused fretboard but the frets now have zero radius so are "sprouting" at either end. Need to get it across to my local luthier so he can bash them back in to shape.
  19.
I think Danish oil is ok as long as it is based on tung oil (which this is). Is tapping frets something I should be able to do (if I'm careful)? It certainly sounds preferable to explaining to Mrs T why I'm taking my new bass into the bathroom with me!!
Getting a pro to sort your frets would be a very worthwhile investment. Don't risk causing permanent damage by attempting it yourself.
