Legend of the highest order.

I once let an Australian band use my bass at a gig in London. The guitar somehow ended up in their dressing room as they were preparing to leave. While I was very slight in those days, our roadie was not and managed to grab the bass back and advise the chap what he was planning was a bad idea. Sold the bass after that, as it was cursed.

It’s a good suggestion, however the only amps I have are all using AC power (kettle lead). Perhaps a rechargeable battery pack would do, but would it last long enough? might be worth a try, I guess.

The Aluminium/Aluminum Double Bass **Mega Thread** :)

I prefer the rat look! The singer has a 1930s resonator which has been played in, so they match well. -
The Aluminium/Aluminum Double Bass **Mega Thread** :)

Redirecting this thread. Did the first gig with mine… Went for Golden Slaps and a K&K pickup, and it sounded great. Lots of admiring looks and plenty loud enough for a bit of busking. I still can’t play much, but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we got paid. -
My ‘Only 1 Bass for 3 Months’ Challenge

I have done this. I have one Fender (an FSR jazz bass) that I use for playing and all gigs (1 or 2 a week). The rest (err, 3 other passive jazz basses) are all in cases. I hardly see it as a privation… -
I just want s simple solution. I’ve got festival mates who build stuff but I’d prefer a single box, covered by a manufacturers warranty.

I have started playing some outdoor gigs with double bass (you could call it busking, I guess) and I need a battery powered amp. I’ve used the Roland cubes which are fine, but necessitate a lot of batteries, so I’d prefer one with an internal battery. Any recommendations?

The economic reality of music is that we make a loss. Wouldn’t have it any other way… :/)

That’s exactly the model used in Bristol. The fit outs are cheap and the studios are effectively custodians of the place to stop them falling into disrepair, be looted or damaged. I had considered investing in a studios once but the reality is that it would never make little cash.

I shudder to ask how much, but whatever it was, it was worth it! -
To be fair, auction houses have large overheads. Nobody is earning millions.

Hiwatt B300 15 combo… information and advice needed
Burns-bass replied to Mike Bungo's topic in Amps and Cabs
They’re Chinese made combos that use absolutely super heavyweight marine ply. They have literally nothing in common with the original hand-wired, point to point valve Hiwatt from the 60s, but if it sounds good to you, then that’s all that matters! I had a Chinese made Hiwatt valve combo which was wonderful. -
Yeah that’s right. When you go to the sale room you’ll often see people with a calculator (that’s what I did when I used to bid).
-
I think he means that the seller has to pay a premium to the auction house for selling their bass (which they do). This means (when combined with the buyers premium) auction houses pull in about 50% of the sale price of every item.
-
It’s VAT on top of the auctioneers commission.

I wanted that one! It looks amazing, congrats.

Excellent advice. Isolate the melody and try and work some ideas from that. Lead stuff high up doesn’t sound great in the bass, which is why Hooky and those guys used a lot of root notes. If it’s not in a E,A, D or G, you can use a capo so you can still get that root note to bounce off. Also, if you have effects might be a great time to use them! Sounds like a lot of fun. Be great to hear it.

Status I suppose. People often believe having something valuable confers status on them (cars, clothes, etc.) but 99.9% of people don’t care. If I told my dad how much my music instruments were worth he’d be shocked and probably a little appalled. In the end, I sold all the expensive basses and now use a £1500 one which is the only instrument I’ve ever bought new and is the best I’ve ever played.

A lot of viewing pleasure there… -
Yeah lots of people do it now. Check out FRFR. I was recommended doing it with double bass and it’s been a revelation.

Is a new mass-produced bass ever worth more than £1500
Burns-bass replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
The reason you’ve probably had a hard life is that you’ve not been paid fairly for your labour. You can perpetuate that or break the cycle. Who would spend £3k on a Stingray? Madness.
