In one sense, that's admirable. On the other hand, unless this is clearly marked as such, it could end up being sold as genuine. I've mentioned it several times on this thread, but two of my vintage basses sold with changed parts clearly mentioned to new buyers. Unfortunately, they have subsequently appeared for sale with all of those things not mentioned. The price was almost double (in one case, triple) what I'd sold the basses for. I know Limelight clearly mark their fakes, but Bravewood doesn't. I think I'm more supportive of the former approach than the latter.

Your focusing on the practical protection for doing this rather then the principle here. Tech companies (billionaires) are using media and content that has been provided for free on the internet to train its models and effectively replace humans in the generation of creative endeavours. And charge us to do so. It may not mean much to you, but for lots of people AI will be an existential threat. In my industry it already is. This stuff is funny, but it normalises what is effectively theft. 16,000 artists against it here: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/jan/21/we-need-to-come-together-british-artists-team-up-to-fight-ai-image-generating-software 1,000 here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwyd3r62kp5o.amp More here: https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2024/10/24/artists-statement-opposing-artificial-intelligence-content-scraping People against machines aren’t luddites looking to stop progress. AI (in its current forms) isn’t progress. It’s derivative rubbish.

Yes I read this. It’s also why all the Fenders are built using tools we’d all have access too.
-
It's also had a really nasty looking truss rod job as well.

I went inter-railing twenty odd years ago and one of our favourite things to do in Eastern Europe was to learn about the local saints and martyrs, and figure out what relics they had at the church (and hopefully get to see them). It wasn't a debauched trip, but that's the life I lead.

I agree. So many guitars also wood with some tenuous BS connection to a “star” as well. It’s a very odd marketplace indeed.
-
It is. I feel bad as I don’t want it to seem like I’m criticising the seller. It’s just that I can’t really tell what, if anything, is original. It seems like it’s just half a neck. But maybe I’m wrong.
-
I’m not trying to offend anyone. It was more I really couldn’t figure out what was original and what wasn’t.

Can you figure out what’s going on here? https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/product/fender-precision-bass-1962-sherwood-green-refinish-pre-owned/ From my reading it’s half a neck (fingerboard replaced) and some vintage tuners and that’s it.

(Thought this was an amp as well so listed it here!) This is a new, sealed and never used Bose S1+ Pro speaker. This was purchased by my business from Thomann before Christmas (you can see the slip case on the top!) This is the one with the built in rechargeable battery. It was bought for some events that never happened, and as a result remains completely sealed and brand new. Can’t return it as it’s been too long. Looking for £500 collected or can send for £15 with full insurance (and another box, obviously!)

If we’re happy to stand by while artists get ripped off, why should we care when it happens to musicians?

Interesting read this one! It’s a Bowie retrospective written by the music critic Charles Sharr Murray. It’s the size of a 12” record and is a cool coffee table book. I’ve enjoyed reading it but now I have, it’s for sale. £14 delivered for antiquarian goodness. There’s a slight split in the seam as the glue is old. Is what it is but I’ve pictured it.

Home taping is killing music! You can choose to take part in something or not. I’ve chosen the latter. I’ve not openly criticised anyone for doing so, but shared my opinion. Other opinions are available and lots of people have shared pictures of themselves, so happy days.

Absolutely. In my business we actively check all content for AI. Research is fine (and can be very helpful) and even basic tasks (like checking referencing, for example) but generating content is a complete no no. I actually did some no-code stuff with AI content generation and it’s impressive. It really could be incredible, but it’s fraught with dangers.

It’s not just images. It’s hoovering up all the content on the internet, including written content, music and images and regurgitating it. Plagiarism is, or should be, a moral outrage. We, as a society, are giving access of valuable material for free to tech companies who will then charge us to buy it back, repackaged and recontextualised. Mind you, this is the country where people will happily share their DNA with a company if they get some report that says they’re somehow related to a king etc. Anyone involved in the creative industries should hate and fear what AI is doing today - and could do in the future.

This stuff is all good fun but we’re ripping off the intellectual property of huge numbers of people doing this. ChatGPT aren’t paying to license this. Neither did they pay Studio Ghib for the manga stuff and a near limitless number of other things they’ve stolen. It’s fun and a I enjoy seeing the results, but ultimately, it’s theft, however the AI guys want to dress it up.

So many questions… Is the E rattling only on an open note or when you finger a note? What does the rattle sound like? A metallic rattle will be very different to a woody “buzz”. Everyone says the same thing that you need to work though the bass from top to bottom. Start with the tuners, nut, string action, bridge, any pickup(s), end pin and then the structure of the bass (seams, etc). Then pick it up and shake it to make sure nothing is rattling around inside. If you’re still experiencing a buzz, who knows!

I have never listened to a Fugazi record. Which is weird as I used to love this sort of stuff. The Beck thread has inspired me to listen to that. But what album would you recommend starting with?
