Besides taking the dog for a walk before Ragnarök I have worked with the timing and accentuation of some disco bass lines and I spent some good time seeing "Closer The The Edge" while my loved significant other is at work. Due to the working schedule we will have our new years dinner tomorrow. "Closer To The Edge" has nothing to do with Yes or U2 but is about IoM TT. Nice view if you are into those kinds of things 🙂. Happy New Year.

I have the 5 string Mikro (GSRM25) as well. I like it. I would like to try other strings. Not many 5 string sets around for this scale.

A lightweight instrument body adds to the tendency to neck dive. My SS Jaguar does not dive but it weighs some 4.2kg. -
If You always travel to the same destination you could also just have a bass of your preferred model stationary there.

I have a short scale Jaguar. It is soundwise very P-bass (on the P pickup, that is) so maybe not very different. It is not super light, though, and weight costs if you are travelling by plane. Especially if you travel as your username indicates. If I were in the situation You describe I would consider a Traveler ultra light bass. I have not tried it myself but from the reviews at Thomann's the sound seems to be their weakest point - if you can live with the ergonomics. If sound is important a preamp/signal conditioner is probably needed - or you can upgrade it with a conventional magnetic pickup.

I have no real good tool for measuring. I set the height using a calibrated match that I have ground to appr. 2mm and then increase/lower depending on buzzyness with a slight relief of the neck. The E-string of my basses (all 4 string) will at 17th position normally be 2-3 mm. Highest on the 30" scale bass. If I get carried away when playing, plucking the string will be accompanied by a small single "clack" from the frets which is mostly audible with full open tone control if. To my ears a too low action is not good for slap. So I am probably mainstream. I like low action but when I play I don't think that I would really bother that much if the string height was 3mm on all my basses. What matters most is that the string height at 1st fret is right.

I tried many types. Today I use molded plugs with the ER filters. I switch between 15dB and 25dB. These are overall best. Among the budget plugs, I find Planet Waves (PWPEP1Pacato Hearing Protection) best. The filter on these is good and the plug fit the ear canal reasonably well. Many budget types seem to be designed for smaller ear canal widths.

I am in a(n amateur)band where the keyboard player records our rehearsals on a simple recorder. Occasionally he burns a CD to the band members and I listen to it when it happens. Simply because this - to me at least - is necessary to improve my playing in a way that supports the song the right way. Not that I am nerdy about playing the exact same lines every time but the [b]musical expression and character[/b] of playing has to be right. This can be difficult to judge unbiased in the moment you play.

Some youtube videos with Tal Wilkenfield, John Mayer. Even if they seem to play music of the past they are themselves very present. And when he is ready maybe some Boney M and some Vulfpeck just to demonstrate that the bass often carries the whole thing through. On a second thought - maybe you shouldn't show him a video with Bony M. -

Congrats. CP 50s are very nice. Especially for clean sounds and light dirt. Mine was very (VERY!) noisy when not touching the strings until I painted the cavities with conductive paint. Very worth the effort.

I wanted to try a short scale so I got a Squier VM Jaguar SS. It is very comfortable to play for a number of reasons. Compared to my other basses especially the E-string might appear to have less definition. But that might be due to other causes than scale itself (strings brand and gauge, pickups brand and configuration, slimmer neck, different materials etc. etc. etc.). But it has a thump or Oomph! not surpassed by any other bass that I have. Many choices available at reasonable prices so give it a try.
