  1. I’ve used Tru Oil (ie Gunstock oil) for many years. David Dykes Luthiers Supplies in East Sussex put me onto it, the idea came from an acoustic guitar builder in Sussex who had developed a technique for using it to gain a thin oil finish on acoustic guitar tops. It penetrates just a little into the wood surface and then subsequent coats build up (after drying) on top of each coat. It employs micro mesh for end finishing the wood and for ‘cutting back’ between each oil coat. (There is a Tru oil filler that could be applied first but I’ve generally gone straight to the oil application using this technique). Micro mesh is now readily available on EBay in packs of something like 1200 to 8000…it isn’t a sandpaper that cuts the wood back but more of a fine ‘polisher’, the body wood will appear to have an almost light coat of oil on before Tru oil is applied and you will see any scratches or missed sanded arear before applying oil.

As a long term Markbass user of amps and speakers, I've had heaps of positive comments ( from bass players to guitarists and drummers) and no negatives about my sound (usually playing fretless bass). to the degree that many other bassists have actually gone and bought Markbass rigs. Now whether they were hoping to sound like me is another (flattering) matter because that also comes down to the bass, the strings, the actual player's style on fingers or pick playing. I have only tried Barefaced 12" cabs and I think they are great, very clean, almost too 'clean' bottom end and I couldn't quite get the 'bite' of the strings but great for straight ahead P bass sounds but like many manufacturers, they are pricing high to cover costs of being a smaller manufacturer and they can't compete with larger companies production rates. On cost alone Markbass is winning. I haven't tried any of the latest MB cabs and it’s a shame there isn't a proper MB type of sound lounge somewhere to hear the three different types of 12" cabs they now make.

A little history of Walter and these great amps.....back in the 1980's I bought one from Walter Woods direct from the USA, they were expensive for the time but... double bass player Rufus Reid was playing one at Ronnie Scotts with the mighty saxophonist Dexter Gordon. I asked during a break what 'that little red box was' that was powering two Bose cabinets, (the ones used in PA systems). It was a WW 100 watt amp. He convinced me, a budding double bass player, to get one. I called Walter to order and asked how he made such a small amplifier and he explained that when the USA government started releasing previously held information from the public, he went to the N.A.S.A. info 'pages' to find out how a space craft could send a coherent voice signal from the moon to Earth and he nabbed the technology for his amps and so made possibly the first digital commercial amplifiers.. Good luck with the sale robbuu, the amp looks to be in great shape.

To add to the fact that apart from being a really good bass, (I’ve owned one since new), it is a Passive bass but there are a lot of various tones to be had from the pickups and wiring, much more than a standard bass. It is also a superb recording bass. I believe the pickups may have been designed by Bill Lawrence (RIP) for this Fender bass. Made for Roscoe Beck who is a great player who recorded and toured for many years with USA guitarist Robben Ford and the Blue Line. Check out Roscoe’s inventive lines on those albums and you will probably be hearing both his four and five string playing.

  9. I play with rock blues bands and it does well to hold its own with them. I'm not talking big stages/outdoor festival stuff, just indoor music clubs etc gigs. Depends how loud your bands are?

  13. Selling one of my impressive Barefaced 12” cabs, maybe to get a 2x12 at some stage. These cabs have a big sound especially when paired up to another cab, love the single cab for smaller gigs and tiny stages. It’s super lightweight and can go loud with an impressive clear low end. I’ve only gigged it a few times, there were a few small minor knocks on the thin front side edges, probably the one drawback of having these lightweight cabs and no cover. Don’t know postage rates, collection welcome or meet up A3/M25 or A3 south coast area is okay for me.
  14. Now SOLD I have these four pots to move on. I’ve more than likely taken them from old (like 1970’s old) Fender basses that the owners wanted new stuff put in and they’ve been stored in a sealed box for many years. They all turn without any hindrances internally. I’ve tried to price via looking at online sites which has been difficult, ranging from £18 to £35 each….so I’m putting them out there at a ‘medium’ price of £60 for all of them to include postage… .A) I hope someone would need them and B) that the price suits….let me know if you are interested please.

  16. Asking £35 (not £42 ….can’t seem to change that particular part of script?) I've got a set of these in that 'spares' box and apart from a few very minor surface marking, they look virtually unused, maybe I tried them on a new bass but preferred the usual black ones that I often use . Basically as new...All the parts and chrome securing screws are present but not the original box. The link below should show the specs/sizes, I think it shows that they weight around 60g per tuner. I've used this Gotoh tuner model on a lot of new made basses and found them to be excellent and they have a smooth turn action.   17. I had one back in 2000/2001 sometime, couldn’t find any serial numbers on it….but they are good basses.
  18. A most excellent dealing with Laurence for a Dunlop Super Potentiometer….plenty of messages and very promptly posted, in time to install and use on a gig two days later, top man.
  19. My original fretless was a conversion P bas, carried out by a double bass repairer and the nut slot depth was almost imperceptible above the fingerboard, this made for a more fretless (Mwah!) sound although it can be overcome by picking strings nearer the bridge area. Otherwise have the nut slots clearing the f’board and whenever a more ‘mwah’ (🤔) sound is required, pluck the strings further along the neck.
