I'm right handed for bass. I first played on stage with a perspex bodied, lefty strung guitar with a 2+2 wood grained headstock. I can't remember who made it, it belonged to a mate. I also used his combo, also nameless (sorry) which was solid state and DI'd to the house system. It was Dublin's city centre. It was 1986. I was stuck in a rut at work. Having done a four year apprenticeship and qualified with additional engineering licences Aer Lingus had put me into a workshop that only handled aircraft wheels and brakes. Because of an ancient union arrangement with the company there would be no prospect of getting out of the shop they put you in and working on aircraft themselves for about seven years. I looked towards coming home to England and going freelance. It was a good move in retrospect. It paid for one of my houses. Thirty years on; I am semi-retired. I have come out of a long period during which my sole occupation had been to care for my mother in her last years. Now I want to spend a lot more time with music. Although I did not make a bad decision all those years ago when I gave up the band I have a need to see where it might have gone now that I have the choice. So thirty years later I got a second start. A couple of weeks ago I set foot on stage with a Steinberger fiver plugged into a portable house rig in Derby's Horse and Groom pub. Fellow BCer PaulWarning (guitar and vox) and Wendy (drums) had kindly invited me to join them as bassist. We did three numbers that Paul had clips of himself and Wendy performing. A brief practice with those clips during the preceding week and we were good to go. In addition, Paul and I had a tune in common that we had each learned independently. We did that without rehearsal. No-one was injured in the rush to go to the bar... Good times. I'm looking forward to more.
This is from late 2015, when we presented our CD. I came into the band after they were finished recording so the album has no compositions of mine nor it's me playing the bass... but it's me on stage! I really like how the sound turn out. damn you, youtube link!
I got that saved no problem. The band, as a whole, looks okay man. As the clip is a medley I can't say I got much chance to "get my ear in" but then it isn't my first choice for personal listening.

Aw. I can't do FB. Any chance you can get it on YT please Blue?
I like playing bass in a 'real' band, but anyone who says producing electronic music is in some way 'easier' or 'unreal' is talking out of their arse.
I'd like to point out that talking out of one's arse is not yet recognised as a valid way of creating speech. Do not despair. I am quite sure that words formed by educated anuses will become more widely recognised as a valid and worthy part of today's culture and that the Oxford English dictionary will happily include them on next years revision of their scratch and sniff dictionary (Chav edition).
So, no controversy here. Epic fail on the spleen-venting front. We really must try harder
http://patient.info/health/the-spleen Who's going to mop up after a serious vent with blood and yukky stuff? I'm going out right away to buy some galoshes.

Have I understood the issue correctly? The band has a new manager. Previously the guitarist was the band leader. The band wants to do a gig 350km away for a crowd of about five? You don't want to do it. A discussion after everyone has had time to cool down and think has been suggested by your new manager. Did the band leader (guitarist) agree? Unless I have missed something I'd agree with your new manager. The issue of commitment should be be discussed in less stressful circumstances after everyone has had time to give the proposal due consideration. You need to decide how strongly you feel about staying with the band if the band is to move forward. I hope I have not misunderstood and that you can all move forward in a workman like way. If this is the first time that you have made your feelings known to the band - good. Hopefully discussion can continue with input from ALL members under the guidance of your new manager. I wish you all success. Can you put a link here to your clip please? The band sounds interesting. Nice to hear that there are Goths in Vienna still. Cheers my friend. That's nice of you to say. -
Cheers for that. It 's not completely out of reach then. Something to ponder and dream about... Sorry for the thread hijack Spondon.
No apology required. Thank you anyway. I don't think mine will be a composite based one but it doesn't hurt to look at what's possible. There was a carbon Steinberger that looked similar to my wooden one. I saw a YT clip of a lad reviewing it and it looked kinda tempting. As a matter of fact that has just given me a lucid moment - first one of the New Year. I should see if I can get a go on a Steiny carbon because I own the wooden version. It should be easier to appreciate the differences in materials. I could then list the pros and cons of each material for a body shape that I am familiar with. I'll look out for the NBD post I hope you'll put up if you get yours.
Thanks for all of the above. It's a gig we've done for ten years, just a pub with music, BUT with a new landlady. Cheers Graham
Is she a control freak? -
yup, sounds like arse covering going on..
"Arse covering" - is that like wallpapering a buttock or is the landlord expecting a cover of "Arse", that classic tune from Geddy and the Glutes? -
is a common whinge among many music fans on Internet forums viz techno, hip hop, House etc. Personally I don't care how music is made just as long as it sounds good to my ears and feet. But I've come across many posters who can get quite worked up about 'electronica' and the use of laptops sequencers, samplers etc saying these genres aren't proper music. That said a lot of so-called dance/electronica combos do use real instruments live and sometimes in the studio. Just wondrin' what basschatters think. Feel free to vent your spleen if the mood takes you
I try to avoid getting into ruts caused by conventional thinking. Sometimes however it is a comfortable option. I'm with you in that I don't care too much. If it makes my feet tap and my head sing, it's good. Bowie's Space Oddity would be compromised without the stylophone bit for example. er... er... oops

Composite technology is something that I have never felt comfortable with. I think that is an impression that I was left with from getting poor lay-ups where voids and splits were bound to occur over time. My thinking is so last century. I'd have to spend a good hour with a composite guitar to help improve. Anyone got a loaner within taxi distance?
Got asked for this for the first time after playing for over fifty years. Is this a new thing? Anybody else experience this? I declare all my band income on my tax return, but I don't want to get involved in other band members' tax affairs.
Who asked you for that? I'd be wary. -
I see what you did there... Alas, flat-arse syndrome is very common in my family... a bit like having a "two pack" on the wrong side of your body.
...and now we're doing Buttchat! TMI. I recently did an Open Mic at Derby's Horse and Groom with a few friendly people to dip my toe in the water, so to speak. I'd now like to take a little swim. I am offering to learn tunes for people based in or very close to Spondon or Derby city who need a bassist for minor events such as Open Mic with a view to gaining experience. You might have a specific date to aim for or perhaps you just want to jam and see where it goes from there. I am willing to share costs for rehearsal room fees. I am available during week days too. Ultimately I would like to find myself in a modest little band that can practice within range of my wallet since I have to use taxis when I can't get my mate to drive me. The aim would be to play local venues and eventually break even on costs. Ta
I bypassed the issue by going solo. Then basically got head hunted for my vurrent gig.
As a singing bassist? That is something I may have to work on for myself.
