Which Basschatters bass would you most like to own? (and why?)
lemmywinks replied to EBS_freak's topic in Bass Guitars
Either Warwickhunt's Bolin or The Funk's Infinity. In fact if Jsixties hasn't sold his Infinity then that one too. I also love the mean green Pedulla that Shockwave did. -
I think it was mentioned (or rather hinted at) that it just sounds equally loud at 8ohms as it does at 4ohms, no switching or anything. I suspect a lot of amps are like this tbh, although comparing them with like for like cabs at different impedances is tricky. The extra volume that comes with going from 8ohms to 4ohms is pretty much always because someone has added an extra cab!
Seems more Bugera than Ibby.
It looks very much like the Promethean and nothing like a Bugera.

I've been intrigued by those amps for a while, you never hear much about them - the only person who I know has one is Paul up there /\ /\ /\ - but you'd think they'd sell loads, even just as backup amps. The 250w one was even cheaper too.
But if you could get this concept to work, the idea of an 8x10 "lego" cab which could easily fit in most cars would sell bloody quick IMHO. Especially if you could go out and buy 1 or 2 at a time relatively cheaply
Surely you're not saying someone should build two boxes, each with four of the aforementioned 10" speakers in which can then be stacked on top of each other? To be sold seperately? You're mad, it'll never catch on!

It would be handy on out of town gigs though, you could but your butties and a bottle of Fanta in the cab. plenty of room for some monster munch and a mini pork pie too, you could stash that behind the tweeter assembly.

Is it worth getting courier insurance on a £700 bass?
lemmywinks replied to CBbass's topic in Bass Guitars
Has anybody ever had a payout on a insured bass getting damaged/lost/stolen/delivered to wrong place/just plain disappeared?
I had a payout on a damaged EA cab shipped via Interparcel. Stupidly I'd stuck with the base £50 cover which wouldn't go anywhere near getting the custom driver fixed properly. Ended up getting the £50 + original fee back (£58 in total) which went some way towards replacing the driver with a suitable neo one so I didn't end up losing out in the end but the lesson is there - get the appropriate cover or risk being very disappointed. -
Trace made 2x10 cabs.....

lemmywinks replied to CBbass's topic in Bass Guitars
Definitely. If it gets damaged you want to be fully covered, although there are much cheaper companies. Usually insurance is £5 for every £250 increment with the companies I use. -
amp, amp amp, and then amp
Get four amps? I like your style! Oh I'd also budget for a setup and a new set of strings whatever bass you buy, unless it's new and from a local music shop, then they should set it up for free.

Don't be afraid to try a cheaper bass, there's plenty of us on here who play (and gig) really cheap basses like Vintage, Wesfield, Aria etc. I take my £45 Aria Jazz out alongside an expensive custom bass and they are both fun to play and sound great. Brand/model snobbery can often be counterproductive when trying to make the most out of a limited budget so just go with the bass that plays and sounds the best. If I were looking for a nice loud little practice outfit then I would seek out a Cube 100, Hartke A70 - A100 or a Line6 Lowdown 110 then see how much I had left for a bass. Also it's not daft to spend more on the amp than the bass, if you have a set budget that's the right thing to do.
The "uber talented Robin" knows his stuff eh.
-
Those Foundation 212s are actually quite compact....Hmmmm, might have to start a fund! Mr. Perry, do you do dual receipts? Ya know, one with the real price on and one I can show to the missus without losing a body part?

Not on Ebay but soooo cheap for Mansons!
lemmywinks replied to BigJim's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I wouldn't pay any more than that, they're the cheaper wooden Status' aren't they? Seem to go for £300-£350 -
To be fair I think the EAD cabs look better than anything else on the market. Me want!

I've been using GStrings since it came out, never really needed anything else. Works well with guitar and bass which is all I really need. Are there any other decent free ones? Everyone I know (and on here) seems to just use GStrings!
Interesting to apply the word 'boutique' to these cabs.. The Baer is about the only one that is getting there in terms of the pics and then they go and spoil it with the handles and footpads, IMO. I have to say that a few of the home-made BFM projects from guys on here look way better. Of course, no one will be fooled if the cab sounds awful but presentation is an important part as well. If it doesn't matter to you..it might matter to the person you are selling it to.
I'm more bothered about the structure and overall design than fancy trimmings. What does boutique mean to you? Cream tolex and matching leather handles? For me it means something designed from the ground up by a single engineer or a small team to fulfill a specific purpose. I would say that describes Barefaced, fEarful, and the others quite well. To me a cab is a well engineered box with speaker(s) in and not something to pose with, it has to be durable, I'm pretty much a carpet or textured paint guy. They need to stand up to the rigours of gigging more than any other piece of equipment I buy. I don't see anything that would put me off buying any of the brands pictured in this thread, they all look like they would last. I really like the look of the Baer and the Acme ones, particularly the Baer.

Aye funnily enough the cabs that I always look for in the FS section are the Barefaced, BFM, Acme etc. Different strokes I guess. I bloody wish they didn't hold their value well tbh, I'd own more cabs if that were true!
Ok, well remember that in the future when you like the rest of us decide to change your gear and suddenly find that no-one wants to buy whichever of these cabs you like because they have no name or reputation! I am sure that at that time you will give a monkey's !!!!! Agree that you should choose with your ears and not your eyes but it must be impossible to find may retailers that stock all of these cabs.
All the cabs in the pic that Alex posted before hold their value very well, although you may not be aware of it as they're more popular in the US. Acme cabs are the most common over here out of those and they get snapped up on this site. Just because it's not a brand you have heard of doesn't mean they don't hold their value, there's plenty of people who will pay for quality and know what brands to look for. That's the nature of boutique gear, those prepared to seek it out are also prepared to pay for it. I see you own a GB bass, should probably have just bought a Squier, after all not many bass players know what a GB is do they?

Gotta love that little Acme!

Get you drummer to buy some in ear monitors! It's amazing how quietly they play when they can hear everything. Won't sort out the bandana wearing guitarist with Marshall stacks but at least the crash cymbal won't be perforating your ear drums. I always found it funny how some drummers claim that they need the volume to get a good sound out of their kit yet they can manage to play quietly without knowing it when they have in ears!

Still £7+vat for a 110x45x20 box weighing 7kg and £10+vat for a 130x50x30 weighing 9kg. The magic figure for the sum of all the dimensions seems to be 210cm, just 1cm over that and the prices rocket.

The thing that annoyed me most about the 3 point bridge on my RD Artist was just how flimsy the whole assembly was when the bass wasn't strung up. Having to put a bit of work in to get it playing well isn't a big deal, after all most basses have bridges that are a compromise, it was the fact that the saddles had a habit of falling off if you broke a string and having to be really careful in case any of the bridge posts were accidentally adjusted that wound me up.

Keep an eye out for the old Ozark, Hohner, Alliance etc ones. They all look similar (same factory probably) and can set up quite well whilst keeping within budget. I would extend your budget a bit to include a setup though as acoustic basses can need a fair bit of work, also maybe some nylon coated strings although he'll get more volume from bronze or steel rounds. When i got mine it rattled like hell (poor fret job/badly cut fret slots) and the bridge and nut slots needed filing right down. It's a nice instrument though and I never had any problems playing it, it just requires a bit more effort and focus to get the desired sound out of it which I never saw as a bad thing at the learner stage. Certainly not painful to play like a bad acoustic guitar with cheeswire strings, just made me think a bit more about how i fretted a note. A friend of mine has a Samick AB which was pretty cheap and it's a dream to play, really well built with a low action straight from the factory. Lots more volume and low end acoustically than my Ozark too.
