1.
Perfect for all your gigging needs if you like the Ashdown sound. Any decent cab with around 400 watts at 8 ohms will be fine.
Cheers. Noticed Andertons are selling a Peavey 210, rated at 400w with 8ohms for £229 but can not find much info regarding them being any good. Failing that theres a TC 210 on here with the same wattage and ohms.
 2.
pretty much any cab.. theres a nice cheap aquilar 2x12 in cheltenham on here for £350 which would do the job luvverly..
Also theres a Genz 210 combo and 210 extension cab for £350 that tempts me very much.
 3. Theres a 500w Ashdown ABM in the classifieds for £200 that Im tempted by, but unsure of a cab that would suit RE wattage, ohms, etc. As i say, Im lacking any clue as to what Im doing.
 4.
Excellent - how much money do you have to spend on the amp ?
As much as it takes and not a penny more. Probably looking at second hand gear up to the price of £500. If thats even enough.
 5.
You'll get a lot of suggestions for the first two (might be an idea to let us know about the band a bit as they might change folks' amp suggestions), and for the third... ...well, we all blag it a bit now and then
Indie styley band with a few punk numbers in there for good measure
 6. As the title says. Just joined my first band in well over a year and it just occurred to me Im missing some essential stuff. 1) a gigworthy bass amp 2) a decent bass case 3) any idea of what im doing. Bass amp and case Im sure the good people here will be able to advise on. The bit about not having a clue maybe not. But hey, we play bass, no one hears us anyway right?
 7.
Now you see my ulterior motive for doing a deal on the veneering. A guy has to get thread followers somehow!
Its what we in the industry call clickbaiting.
 8. Id start by changing strings and, while theyre off, scrubbing the fretboard with some sort of treatment. All old dead cells and old sweat are in there. Failing that, dop it in a wheelie bin full of Dettol. Should do the trick.
 9. Add me and the mystery bass to the list.
 10.
I think the red is gorgeous. Having seen some of the other outcomes I think this will be another killer.
Ive barked a lot of orders at Andy so far but I know for sure this will turn out gorgeous. Its going to look like a completely new bass from what Ive seen so far.
 11. If i wasnt following this keenly before, I definitely am now. Looking good, I must say.
 12. I quite like hip hop but I feel the general quality of it has taken a nosedive since the days of Dr Dre and maybe Kanye.
 13.
The veneer has no real structural strength at all. If you chambered from the top, you would need to cover it - a bit like a control chamber cover - and then veneer over that. It is probably how we will tackle this one. I'll be doing a thread on the progress so you'll be able to see how it all pans out. Quite often, on projects like this, decisions need to be made on the hoof, so it will be interesting how close the final method is to the present thoughts.
A full build diary just for me? I feel all VIP
 14. Sorted. Mr Andyjr1515 is taking it to be lightened and veneered. Have a feeling its going to look superb.
 15.
You could bring your newly-veneered Harley Benton!
my thoughts exactly
 16. Im going to make a serious effort to be there this year, seeing as i can now drive and all. Exciting ...
 17.
To be honest, the veneer would add a few ounces at the most - it's only 0.6mm thick. Wow, though, 11.5 lb is VERY heavy. Is it a visible all-round natural finish? ie, can you actually see that it's solid wood at the sides? The good news is that if the wood, ply ash or solid ash, is that heavy, then a decent amount of weight comes out with each chamber cut.
Yeah its solid natural all over, couldnt say how many pieces make up the body but probably a fair few. Ive sent you a PM btw.
 18.
Hi, Harry Guitar and bass builds and mods is my hobby and I like doing veneer jobs because of the sheer transformation you can get for not much outlay. I'm presently doing some trials with different varnishes, etc so more than happy to quote you on a veneer job if you are happy to be a 'guinea pig'. If you are OK with some of the veneers I have in the loft, we can probably do a deal that gets close to your budget. Ref the weight, I suspect the body is plywood - it tends to be very heavy! Very feasible to get some wood out of it - and the tone is not likely to be affected at all (there are a lot of myths around on the topic). Drop me a PM if that's of any interest. Andy p.s. - these are a few of the veneer jobs I've done: This recent one is plywood (there's a thread in the Build Diaries)...nothing wrong with plywood: ...and this is also plywood (but probably couldn't do a deal on this type of thing ): This is my own Squier VM bass:
I believe the body is ash (according to Thomann listing) but it is heavy as anything. Weighed today to be about 11.5lbs, which in my opinion is heavy.
 19. I personally like the look of it.
 20. If it was more local Id be all over this.
 21.
Strip the finish, thin the body, refinish in oil?
I will have a look into this actually. Sand down, try and bring in all the edges by a quarter of an inch or so (or as much as i can get away with), maybe make it a bit thinner front to back, and refinish. I had looked into chambering and capping but that seems like far too much effort and i didnt want to lose too much sustain.
 22.
Something to consider is if the whole bass is weighty, if you get a new light weight body, will the heavy neck give it neck dive? FWIW my take would be to grin and bear it while you save up for a better bass. Cheap basses are a,good starter but they are cheap for a reason. Good luck with the search and the sale.
True. For now I'll probably stick to it. Maybe treat meself to a specced out J bass when I turn a certain age later in the year. Maybe my first real Fender or that Sandberg PMT Birmingham have that i promised Id buy myself one day...
 23.
If you are looking to spend up to a ton, I would just buy a new Harley Benton and sell the old one !
Very tempted at the minute but the weight of them is a real killer
