1. Not quite, mine has ended up with.....The Three Degrees and Gladys Knight. Fab music to play along to. Though I dont mind a bit of "Autumn Leaves"...or "Along Came Betty" now and again. Good too.
2. Squeeze, Another Nail In The Heart ....masterclass of musicality, not another solo like it anywhere in pop/rock history..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bTWF7eirJw
3. Just imagine if it had been Bernard at Glasto....unreal eh...
4. Lighten up, your digging in too much...and the bonus is your tone will tighten up too. Win Win.
5. .... those Sledge girls, mmmm. I actually think he looks really ill in that clip. Notice he does'nt move an inch and freeze it at 2.26, not looking good at all.
6. Will Lee above....damn, he even looks like a bassist ...brilliant. This whole thing is a bit crazy. Yes Bernard was my absolute bass hero back in the day but I doubt there is anyone here that ever saw him play live. Jerry Barnes is a terrific showman and what he does whilst nothing like Bernard is great, just what the crowd needs. Have to say though when ever I see Chic I always feel a bit sad. Nile and Bernard were Chic..its still not the same, never will be. The guy was an extraordinarily original musician.
7.
I think the 'loudness wars' have a lot to answer for here... For those of you unfamiliar with the term, it's the trend of using sometimes excessive audio compression to make a record as loud as possible - but removing much of the dynamic range. Apparently most folk automatically equate louder with better.
++++1 No matter how good the dig recording there is never the dynamic range and seperation that there is with studio tape to vinyl....it all sounds like crystal clear mush to me.
8.
A good quality vinyl LP played on a good quality turntable through a decent amp and speakers will sound superior to a compressed digital format. You can tell the difference but the playback device makes a massive difference. Is it enough to justify the price and convenience issues? Depends on the beholder and the situation. I don't see the point in 4k screens when we have HD but I have a mate who goes loopy about them. Each to their own.
Aren't you forgetting sumthing?...todays original recording will still be crappy compressed digital, or are studios now going over to four inch tape and Fostex to keep the whole thing "authentic", I doubt it somehow. I listen to some of my stuff from the 70's and late 60's and just know it's highly doubtful its ever going to be replicated...
9. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-40445192 Hope so...
10. Young players now are too far from the blues. The electric guitars heyday was playing blues style rock etc...all this current fast down strumming makes me cringe. Yes the guitar is doomed.
11.
There's something utterly joyous about watching older performers/bands, who must know their golden age is over, going out and not only winning over that massive crowd but absolutely slaying it. Best Glasto set I've watched this year.
Yep it's called talent .
12. Very nice....great to see Chrissie Hynde and good sound apart from the kick drum...ouch.
13. Oddly enough I cant remember the last time I saw a 70's Orange 120 head for sale...cant be that rare surely?
14.
A drummer that couldn't keep time and couldn't come out if fills at the right time!
Dealing with this problem at the moment. Trouble is the guy is such a nice bloke with a wicked dry wit ...very funny, good to be around etc..BUT!...and Ive never seen this before. He holds his sticks with his index fingers placed rigidly on the top of the sticks which means his wrists are stiff and the groove is suffering. Maybe I'll stay , maybe I'll go or maybe at my age I should stop worrying bout these things and just enjoy what we got. The upside is the keys is a cathedral organist. He's an amazing musician who can play and sound like anything at a drop of a hat.
15. Anyone see what bass rig he's playing?
16. Its the same at nearly every outdoor show I've worked at over the last few years (Im a photographer for my sins!). Can anyone explain the deal with those bloody great subs below the front of the stage....reckon I've yet to hear a nice balance anywhere in any field that I've stood in, and Ive seen some experienced session bassists playing who all end up sounding like boom and mud......hopeless.
17. Your in a confined room with no bodies to soak up the volume plus surely the idea is to interact and sort things out etc so 60 watts is plenty if the guitars do the right thing and max the pre's and lower their master vol's. Also this idea that you have to keep up with the "loud" drummer is a bit amateurish imo. Our drummer simply plays a bit quieter in rehearsal and he still sounds crisp and on the money. Your ears will thank you for it in 30 yrs time.
18. How about this then? Local (mature) band I'm doing a couple of outdoor events with this summer have a funny little habit of changing keys on the fly depending on how the singers voice is...eh? I cant understand it and even they dont seem to realise what they are up to...its very funny has me in stitches but they cant see why I'm laughing..has to be the weirdest thing I think I've ever done. Huge fun though.
19. Shoulda Loved Ya..Narada Michael Walden....and to think of it theres loads from the early 80's. How bout Dance To The Beat...brill line, cheesy disco sillyness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1H7P8XJZqE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3--gpcJlARA
20. 1975, Boz Burrell Bad Company....that sweet muted fretless thing he did...lovely. Now I like nothing more than to play along to a Gladys Knight Philly soul collection..bass heaven.
21. My heavy old 71 P was a dog so damn sick it could barely stay on its stand anymore. Over the board it sounded pretty lush but the open E string was so dead as to be inaudible, tried strings, neck bolts, bone nuts, bridges everything to bring it alive and figured that either the neck wood or body wood were causing some sort of cancellation...weird
22.
Honestly, JJ's actual P-basses are some of the very few star instruments I have any interest in. I mean, the bass that was played on THIS... c'mon! (And if anybody here's never seen this, it's well worth nine minutes of your life, especially with headphones on). http://www.youtube....h?v=2iDj1D2OimM
Is that a Fender Showman rig JJ is using that clip?..the cabs used a pair of JBL K140's....nice from what I can remember.
23.
scooped sound is lovely when playing on your own but live with the rest of the band it's a no no, I've got a Trace GP12 and I turn all the sliders down below 100Hz, and don't use the TE shape button, what you hear and what the crowd hears are 2 different things, generally you need to think you're not 'bassy' enough but you probably are especially if there's a bit of a crowd in, I've found that bass is particularly affected by bodies in the room
+++++++++1 in fact when your sounding thin and sh*tty on stage the audience are getting full, rich and round tone heaven in the mush pit.
24. If it could be proven beyond doubt that he recorded 'Darling Dear, 'Bernadette' etc etc on it then it could be argued that historically it's a pretty cool instrument but without the proof.....
