1. Was always fascinated by that Ai No Corrida slap tone etc and u can hear it on the Mj tune above...brilliant player. who had a big influence on my slap playing. Used to play "The Dude" in a function band....amazing stuff too.
2. If nothing else they are certainly interesting and good of course. My 70s P bass wears an old dull thuddy set of flats which is great..another P wears a slightly newer set of flats which are as bright now seven yrs after I first fitted them which seems pretty unusual.
3. Ah basswood. My VM P is basswood and its great, light weight and sounds good too..BUT its soft as hell. When I changed the bridge I had to make sure to put slivers of wood taken from an old floorboard to give the screws some bite cause without it they just would not tighten up nicely...sfine now, and one of my fav basses of all time very resonant.
4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjw1aQ0M9WM I'm sure I've put this up for all the wrong reasons, Mods, take it down if it's deemed out of order...thks
5. Good luck with the audition. Just had another listen to the intro...so clean and crisp and analogue sounding..loads of warmth. I can play most styles but can I do that chukka thing, no way, its genius. Love the second half of Dance Dance Dance where it all kinda goes quiet and he's still pumping away...like a metronome...beautiful bass work.
6. I listen to music off my phone or ipod but only when Ive got my bass....I just love playing along to tunes whatever it is and find it quite hard just listen to a piece of music in isolation.
7. Spot on. Broom handle, fence post, piece of four b two! He could have played anything and it would sound like Bernard. The guy had incredible technique. I can play fast 16ths ala Rythmn Stick easily but I cant get anywhere near what Bernard did..amazing.
8. Dont sppose this'll ever get read its right at the end..anyhow, My take on Bernard?...it really was all in his amazing fingers and nothing else. I have yet to hear a bassist who can create that dry clicky thwack on Everybody Dance..listen carefully, the speed and timing are very natural and not forced at all, its just amazing what he does...and I bet nothing to do with strings or particular instrument. Fabulous bassist.
9. My lightweight VM PJ is a pretty good guitar and I own a vintage P as well but its the PJ I take to gigs. Recording is bridge PU only...not great on my PC but sounds crisper in reality. https://soundcloud.com/user-180920771/squire-vm-pj-1
10. Probably best to break each section down and learn each chunk separately. This sounds like a good version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNdlpnMKO-M
11. This is pretty intersting. My lovely partner even at a ripe old age is a fantastic dancer..she doesn't do much but her little moves and rythms are exquisite to watch....but can she tap time with her hand to a tune......not a chance!
12. I only ever heard the band from outside a venue once and boy were they thunderous. My ears are also on the way out now and Iuse industrial strength ear plugs every time, even for acoustic gigs, it actually makes the band sound better!
13.
It's all relative... I wouldn't expect my dad is much cop at aerospace engineering...
Ha.. he was only a lowly drone, and no pun indended. I guess playing an instrument is a funny thing and it doesn't appear to have a lot a lot to do with what we think we can do, some people can do it others cant I guess.

15. I envy you guys. My old dads a pretty bright guy....aerospace industry etc and likes music and showed an interest so I did exactly the same thing a few years ago with an acoustic. I showed him a few things, went away for a few months only to return with him unable to hold the thing let alone play it, pity really.
16. Im kinda with the OP. After 25 yrs of playing Mustang Sally and Roseanna to the 'crowd' I realised I could take it no more, so now Im sat at home studying Jazz..only wish I'd done it sooner. Very happy.
17. Pity, and looks like the rock star looks have left him too.
18. What an amazing piece of (expensive) history, though personaly I love to see them well worn etc. I owned a black early 1977 B No model thoughout the 80's...but it was a dog, heavy as hell and I could never get the classic gnarly tone out of it. Iconic basses though.
19. Only great thing about a Jazz for me is the bridge PU burp. Tried many different variations over the years but I cannot get past the body shape and skinny neck....though the RW one I had recently was wonderfully light and resonant but I couldn't keep it.
20. was blown away as a 14 yr old noob when it came out, fab tune..and she sings and plays it too..not easy.
21.
It's all poppycock, just play the damn bass
You know I think ur right and I really didn't want to believe it. Re my earlier post...my new Squire has got the hardest, toughest coating on it I've ever come across, its almost space age..yet the bass is lightweight and rings like a bell....said vintage P is heavy with a thinnish paint job and thuds like a sack full of lead weights..go figure.
22. My vintage P bass feels beautifully worn etc but doesn't sound that great..my new Squire sounds amazing but doesn't feel as nice as the old one.....0.2$
23. Played this brill stuff back in the day...tricky bassist to emulate.. he's very smooth, love it. Just got to thinking bout the production quality on a lot of these old tunes...clear, crisp instrumentation with amazing separation...why the heck does everything today sound like a dull mush..
24. Update I've just made the fatal error of trying to learn a brilliant jazz fusion piece which I found that is way too advanced for me...and now cause I cant quite get it I'm feeling kinda fed up to the point of loosing interest in the whole endeavour...again. Bad move. Must learn to work up gradually from the easy stuff first...ha
