1. Just looking at this from a punters perspective. Went to see a 'pub' band recently and in a word had to 'leave' cause it was literaly too loud. Jeez what is going on with bands now...and yesmost of that was the grinding lower mid bass tone. Guy had a powerful modern rig which felt like it was cutting me in half...was a far cry from the old Bassman 135 and 1 X 15 I used to use back in the day.
2. There are literaly hundreds of very good drummers out there......Was watching a Tube vid about cruise ship musos, the drummer was being filmed and boy was he crisp!...and he was reading every dot, amazing. But nail my colours to the mast? Buddy Rich for shear originality followed by Steve Gadd who has probably played every style possible in a live recorded environment..
3.
this is panty wetting phenomenal finger style from the master on a 5 string. his slap is obviously fantastic but i reckon his finger style is better. When he plays he really plays. He plays a stock Miller Fender 5 string on this record. he told me that when i met him. yes that is my claim to fame.
He's a great player but does he move me...no. Cant put my finger on it, it all sounds to frantic and not very musical. 0.2$
4.
I really like Me'Shell's feel and Zender too, I think Zender is really underrated actually, when he was younger in that Jamiroquai gig he was such a good fit, really shone. I know it's Jamerson but for me this is still the best recorded bass guitar part I've ever heard, there are parts of it where the harmony between him and Marvin are just achingly beautiful. When the bass and the vocal start up proper, around the 30s mark, the whole tune just blossoms. That's ****ing bass playing. And just his movement generally under the strings throughout really brings the whole thing to life. What a player. 5.
My current fave is Ready Freddie's playing on Steely Dan's tour Think fast in Cincinatti https://www.youtube....h?v=HeniR2wP6kg Consummate playing from a consummate sideman. Listen to it on a good sound system. Lovely tone from what I think is a 'boring' 70's P bass, superb pro and still no-one can play 'forget me nots' the way he does. The whole darn thing is as good as it gets.
6. For me its not the flash stuff that gets me but the subtle playing that often goes unnoticed but which inevitably supports the tune. eg the subtle sequence of ghost notes on the chorus on Andy Gibbs Everlasting Love....yeah Its ok I can hear the chortling from the back of the class but its terrific playing however cheesy the tune might be. or Bob Babbitts playing on the Gladys Knight and Diana Ross singles from the early 70's uber musical and spot on. 0.2$
7. My old granny apparently played piano in the pubs during the war but my mum is completely musically illiterate..but my brother and myself are pretty musical. Funny how that happens.
8. I know I'm gonna get slammed for this. He just did a solo live number which comprised strumming an amped guitar real hard and fast and shouting....beats me. Reckon my age has finally caught up with me....or has it? McCartneys son, I would never have guessed.
9. Funny thing is after 20 odd yrs I now find myself just using my index finger only with the second finger hitting the strings now and again when needed. It seems to work really well with a lighter touch and my playing's improved a heck of a lot.
10. I recently ended up like the OP and the way round it for me was to move away from the pop/rock genre and to learn to read and study jazz...two things which yrs ago I would have never thought remotely possible. (maybe its an age related thing) Anyway the house is now knee deep in music scores and I've never been happier.
11. His 'condition' is probably long term so there's nothing u can do about it. Get rid of him. I'm sure u can find another fiddle player who at the very least is a nice person and who can play a few of the right notes without all the grief.
12.
I thought 'trike' had been banned as it was nasty, remember it from years ago in my engineering apprentice days. Reckon I've had 15 cars, some done close to 200k miles and never had the need to clean the brakes! It must be one of those substances that advertisers like to sell us, completely unnecessary (like furniture polish, vaginal deodorent, toilet cleaner, snake oil.....)
Maybe not the brakes but it strips grease like nothing else and thats just the bloody fumes...which is how they prepare alloy bits for anodising etc.
13. Worked a Saturday job in the auto industry as a teen. Brake cleaner is a lovely 'carcenogenic' liquid commonly known as......trychoethylene and is used in the metal finishing industry as an aggressive degreasant. It's not corrosive but it is very nasty indeed. If you must use it do it outside and wear a mask/gloves etc... but yes better still give ur strings a plain wipe down or fit a new set instead.
14. I would give my eye teeth and a few other bits to play Gospel. Trouble is I'm a total non believer which kinda puts me at a bit of a disadvantage....but to be on a stage grooving with all those fantastic voices, it really moves me, gives me the shivers in a very good way Check this incredible stuff out and what an amazing bassist too. 15. Karen Carpenter Stevie Wonder Paul Rogers Janis Joplin Very difficult to pick just one....Oh and not forgetting Aretha, Gladys etc....impossible task I think.
16. Blimey! Im a Stones fan,OK..my comment was based on a positive affectionate observation....you guys need to lighten up big time OK!
17.

Not really a groovy dancer but Oh! that production sound, strings and what not ...... 70's were the best days by far for studio tone.
18.
It seems very fashionable to take the piss out of the Stones, but I hope I'm still gigging at their age
Its Ok. I grew up with them and I've got all their records. Have a nice day.
19. Funny thing is I reckon I've gone to seed a bit (at least Im honest! ha) but, have never felt the need to practise so much in my whole life..at least an hr everyday day and I love it even though I will probably never play live again...
20.
No-one mentions KC and the Sunshine Band That's The Way I Like It. Odd but infectious bass line And a host of other biggies from the mid-late 70s.
Oh yes...75 I think. Spent the summer on the beach as a teen and this brilliant tune takes me there every time I hear it. And yeah that bassline. That's the sound of a talented bassist who's thought about the best line for the job...don't hear much of that nowadays.
21. Boy you have to know ur chops to do what he did on that Night Rythms vid....sizzly and high in the mix.... fantastic player....I've practised pretty well every day for 30 yrs and I still cant play with that kind of authority. Amazing. Great band too..love the drummer, very crisp.
22. And then there's Darling Dear...drop dead beauty in the busiest musical bass line ever written. https://www.youtube....h?v=076hAabSqN0 Genius.
23.
Many mixes (and re-recordings) of this out there but this one really shows that killer bass line.. Flares are compulsory!
Is that played with a pick?...admire anyone who can play that fast with a pick..fingers no probs.
24. I must have been the only lad in our school that loved disco and Philly type soul music , and I still love it and in the circles I move in now as a fifty something I still have to keep it underwraps....weird I know. I love it all, even those sickly little Tina Charles numbers etc...but shh dont tell anyone!
25. Great pictures. http://news.sky.com/story/1666704/hola-havana-rolling-stones-fly-into-cuba As old as the hills and they look it but,...they've still got it albeit in a kinda dicrepit sort of way...and love the way Charlie watts always looks like he doesn't really wanna be there....ha Love em.
