  1. The Phil Jones Briefcase is battery powered and compact. Not cheap, but great amp.
  2. I have three crumbling vertebrae and a herniated disc, so a 2kg amp and two 7kg cabs are great for me. 20 years ago I had a Mesa 400w valve head and two Road Ready cabs. Silly me.
  3. I'm with Discreet. The One10 cannot be compared to any other 1x10. Most every 1x10 I've tried (I work in the industry, so I get to try lots of stuff) has sounded boxy or lacking in heft. I use the One10 on its own for many gigs, adding a second when needed (hardly ever) To be honest, one cab sounds better than most 2x10s I've used One of the best features is the dispersion, and consequently the ability to hear yourself, even when standing right over the cab.
  4. The Zac Victor pickup from Duece Bass Co is a fraction of the price of a BassMax, and is a better pickup in every way. No preamp needed.
  5. I have serial numbers 0057 and 0096 (I think, I'm at work), and power them with a GK MB800 or a GK MB200. I have played an outdoor gig to 2000 people and the sound guy asked me to turn down so he could put me in the front of house mix! Bwahahahaha! I love it! In fact, it's all so good I might sell the MB800, as I also have a CAE line booster pedal if the MB200 doesn't quite cut a gig power-wise. I mostly play double bass these days, but my P with flats rocks it too. Best rig I've had in 35+ years of gigging, during which I've had Mesa, Trace, Ampeg, SWR, Peavey, Ashdown and other forgettable brands.
  6. I have a GK MB800 head and two of these One10 cabs. They are ridiculous! I play upright bass, and one cab is more than sufficient even with a drummer. I have played an outdoor gig to 1500 - 2000 people, no sweat. There is so much bottom end I run my bass knob at 9 or 10 o'clock. I find no need for a tilt-back. Even if I'm standing over the cab, it disperses so well that I can hear myself easily. I purchased the second cab more for pushing air to get a huge room-filling sound, rather than needing it for volume. The only cab I have ever played through that matches the Barefaced for upright bass is a Greenboy 12/6 which weighed 17kg, but at 7 kg each, my damaged back is loving the One10s.
  7. A Golden Slap E string is not bad, but not good either. Same will apply to any of the gut or synthetic strings. The only way to get great definition is with a steel string, or a composite like Velvet Garbo. The best ever definition and tops come from Greenboy speaker cabs that have the 6" mid driver. The 6" and it's relevant crossover give the best high mids and sweetest highs I've ever heard.
  8. I have a GK MB800 amp, and in the continuing quest for the perfect tone (Bwahahahaha!!!) I have A/B'd it against a MarkBass LM and Nano heads, an Ampeg PF500 head, and the GK always wins due to the clarity of sound. I have TecAmp Puma on my mind, but these are not sold where I live, so looking to see if anyone here has A/B'd a Puma against the GK? If so, what was the conclusion? I mainly play a double bass, and have two Barefaced One10 cabs. Thanks.
  9. Poor dispersion and running out of lows at volume are not something that equates with Barefaced. I have two One10 cabs which I am putting 800 watts (clean) into. Although I can't be a***d with rock music any longer, I could play any rock gig with this. I can only guess the 4x10 will be a total monster.
  10. Taken me 35 years to get it right. No more GAS. Upright German carved bass, Deuce bridge, > cable > GK MB800 head > 2 x Barefaced One10 cabs. Sometimes a P with TI Flats into same rig. No effects, no compression.
  11. I met him 2005 at NAMM. Lovely man. Saw him way before that with James Taylor. Played very simple and tasty...... until JT gave him a solo. He burned! I mean HE BURNED!!
  12. A point to consider.... although an amp might be rated to 2 ohms, running a full length gig at high volume is asking a lot from an amp at 2 ohms, and will generate a LOT of heat. I would not consider it. Seems to me a phone call to Alex Claber is the first thing to do.
  13. There's been a few on here wondering how two One10 cabs would go. I'm here to say..... amazing! A big increase in everything: heft, presence, clarity and of course.. bottom. I no longer play in loud rock bands but these puppies would do it easy. Hope this helps anyone contemplating running two of them.
  14. I've been asked to turn my BF One10 down too. These cabs totally contradict the size of them. And I've just got another! Not sure why.... LOL! As well as amazing bass response and sweet tops, they have great dispersion characteristics. I'll never have to buy another speaker cab again. I'm running a GK MB800 which is overkill, the MB500 would be perfectly adequate.

  16. Has anyone used one of these yet? I'm contemplating picking one up as a backup, they're so small and light.
  17. My second Barefaced One10 just arrived. I'm like a kid in a sandpit! With my GK MB800 head, and Deuce D2 bridge and Zac Victor pickup on my upright, I'm winding back the low bass knob to 9 o'clock with just one cab.... the bass response is just phenominal. With two cabs will be insane. Darn, I don't have a gig now for a couple of weeks, how am I going to hold out?
  18. Unless your bass was set up properly before purchase, it is likely that it came with "shipping" strings, which are typically only suitable for building a fence. This is a standard procedure for Chinese basses, and most any stringed instrument.
  19. Don't cheap out on the drivers. Dave Greenboy chose the Kappalites for a reason, and he designed the cab specifically to suit those drivers. Any other driver will not give the same results. Also, use only the crossover from Speaker Hardware that is specified. These crossovers have been designed to handle a lot of power and give a very smooth transition. I built a fEARful 12/6 exactly to spec, and it's the most amazing sounding cab I have ever played through, and I've been through a LOT of cabs. If you cheap out, you will regret it.
  20. I want to give a big heads-up to Deuce Bridges. For years I put up with uneven string performance, regardless of what strings I used. Tried the soundpost in all sorts of positions, and I had adjusters so I tried all manner of string heights. I fitted a D2 Deuce Bridge, and voila! There it was... strings totally even both in tension and volume! Then I noticed that acoustically it was louder and punchier. My main band rehearses acoustically, and my band mates all commented how much clearer and easier to hear it was. I guess it wont suit purists because of its appearance, but I reckon it's the best thing since way before sliced bread!
  21. I've had a Trace rig in the past. My current D class GK MB800 runs rings around it for power and tone.
  22. A few players have mentioned clarity. This One10 cab is the first cab I've ever owned in 35+ years of playing that I can sit on the floor and hear myself perfectly (kind of important for a double bass player! ). I just played an outdoor gig with it, several hundred punters, and the soundman told me to turn down so he could put me in FOH. I was running the gain at 9 o'clock and master at 11 o'clock.... just coasting really. And that with one 10" speaker!
  23. Great to see the love for Barefaced. I can't comprehend the old "I can't afford it" wail though. I live in New Zealand, so I not only have hefty freight, but also Goods and Service Tax, customs entry tax, various other little charges, and the GST on all of those too. However, the benefits of the Barefaced are worth every bit of it. I can't wait to get my second one! Incidentally, the cab I sold to finance the second one was a Greenboy fEARful 12/6, a wonderous cab, but the weight was a bit much for my crumbling vertebrae.
  24. Just wanted to give a shout out for Barefaced cabs. I mostly play double bass, and run a GK MB800 head into a high quality "other brand" cab. The damage to my back means light weight is my catch cry , so I bought a Barefaced One10 cab. Perfect! Light, well built, loud, great tone, can hear myself on stage easily. So good in fact I sold my other cab and have ordered another One10 to give me a modular rig. How much money would I have saved over the decades if I'd had this gear back then?
