1. I only recently came across a DVD of the Boomtown Rats live at Hammersmith Odeon in 1978. Whatever I may think of Bob Geldof and his often arrogant attitude, that band had some great tunes and were damn fine players.
2. I'd only recently heard of the Preston and Fabulous Thunderbirds, through a thread on here, I believe. Sad news.
3. Twice. 1985. Fender Telecaster bass with a sharp bridge saddle. Fixed that and since then, none.
4. A band that many in Ireland, myself included, at the time thought would beat U2 to the top was The Blades. Great songwriting, catchy tunes, but maybe a bit too idealistic to pander to the establishment to make it big. They do a yearly re-union in Dublin... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaC47ejWmdA
5. Reviewed...and looking forward to the TV series, movie, and sequel !
6. I got the Kindle version, and have finished it in only two sittings, it was that good ! There's certainly a fair few uncomfortably familiar moments in it for all the weekend warriors out there.
I especially loved Bill and his constant quest for 'The Sound' - I was quite worried you'd run out of guitars for him !
A great read, I'll be recommending it to all my musically-inclined friends.
7. Former semi-pro, combining roadie/sound tech job with gigging, currently a much happier hobbyist.
8.
An apostrophe
Also a question-mark. Back on topic, obviously what's necessary is the band playing stuff people want to hear...once the rig gets across the vocals and the basic sound of the song, it'll do. The question is then how much more than 'It'll do' is needed to make the musicians in the audience happy...
9. Well, you could always record your vocals or basslines beforehand, and mime... A guitarist/vocalist I used to play with had the same issue, and found his solution was a couple of shots of Jack Daniels just before showtime. I'm not recommending it, but it certainly worked for him. Sadly, the actual answer is practice.
10.
I think it means gross, disgusting or creepy. However, young master discreet (14) often greets me with 'what up, stank' first thing in the morning, when I'm not quite ready for it.
Sounds like young master Discreet needs a sharp clip round the ear,,,
11. Time, or rather not having enough free to devote to the project. Personality clashes, and the realisation that having to spend hours together in rehearsal rooms, tour buses, on stage will certainly result in serious bodily harm at some stage.
12. A fine example of nobody else in the band actually aware of what the bass player should be playing ! Although as pointed out above, there is one version where there is a change, if I remember rightly it's on the fade-out... It's always a danger when just saying look it up on YouTube so whenever it's needed I'd always send the link to the actual specific version I'm listening to. Bear in mind we're dealing with guitarists, singers and even, gods help us, drummers...
13. Don't use a pick much, but when I do it's either a Dunlop Big Stubby 1mm or a Felt one...depending on the tune.
14. If it's any help, I've a sister living in Florida and I'll be visiting her at the end of next month...
15. I'll add my thanks as I hadn't heard of them before either ! Very cool.
16. I have to admit to a fondness for Jimmy Buffet's happy holiday nonsense - comes from some good memories of the Florida Keys. If that makes me an asshole, so be it. In my defence, I agree with the rest of the list - although I'm not familiar with a couple, and don't care enough to check them out.
