  1. https://www.stewmac.com/How-To/Online_Resources/Learn_About_Guitar_Pickups_and_Electronics_and_Wiring/Single-coil_Pickup_Kits.html Scroll down to "Charge the magnets". There is a limit to how much "charge" an Alnico magnet can take - or any magnet in fact. See magnetic hysteresis.
  2. Joking aside, we do not hide anything either. I find it useful to talk things through before committing more funds to the bottomless pit. I have my second double bass and she knows it is a good investment, as well as being a musical instrument of far better quality than I might have hoped for.
  3. I am happy with my iMac but that decision is driven by software. As you have been using Windows I would stay with it and look at the offerings from the likes of Inta Audio who have been building "Pro audio PCs" for some time now. Scan is another company with a fair amount of experience in this field. Apart from one or two proprietary chips, Apple uses bought-in components so reliability should be similar, although worse in the case of the 21.5" iMac which does not seem to have been designed for intensive use (anecdotal evidence from a website developer). Effective cooling is important for long component life and a well-designed PC workstation should last for years.
  4. Buying a double bass is a serious investment and trust is required. My feedback is that you can trust Roger 100%. He is extremely knowledgeable and I could happily have spent the rest of day chatting to him. Thank you for a great bass. Edit: I realise the regulars here know all this, but I wanted to say something positive after an amazing transaction.
  5. Well... that might work with a hard case. 😉
  6. An interesting solution. I will bear this in mind if I ever hit any problems. Thank you.
  7. P.S. No problem with my bridge. I have been careful not to stress the wires when removing it.
  8. Setup. The adjustable neck angle is a clever idea although mine needs to be almost flat in the pocket to get reasonable string height. Strings. I fitted the suggested upgrade Thomastik Spirocore Weich strings and they are excellent for a more traditional sound. Playing. This where it wins over something like the otherwise excellent NSX EUB when reading. The neck has the reference points that you have on a double bass. Transporability. In our hatchback the Allegro just needs the wider side of the split rear seat folded down and it fits comfortably behind the driver's seat.. It will also fit in over the passenger seat when it is moved fully back. Please ask any questions that you might have. As always, the above is all just my personal experience.
  9. Laying it down. It will not balance on its side; it tips over on its back. I use a cello stand for gigs. BSX does offer a tripod stand as an extra but Bass Direct did not have one in when I bought mine. Output. Mine has quite a low output. I checked the internal pots and they are all set to pencilled calibration marks. I decided to leave it all alone and just turn up my preamp gain. I have not noticed any additional noise through gh my Genzler 350. Gig bag. The shoulder strap is not up to the job; use the handles. One of my band mates dropped the Allegro when, unasked, he decided to help me carry my gear to car. It landed on the tailpiece and this pulled the screws out. It is in for checking at the moment. As far as I know no other damage was sustained. They are built to take a few knocks.
  10. Argh. Just lost most of my reply. I will do this in installments. I have been using a 4 string Allegro for a few years. It is a very transportable solution and I don't regret buying mine, but there are a few practical issues. To highlight these is not to condemn the bass as the overall package is a good one. Also, these are all "in my experience". Balance. It does not balance against the body like a double bass. Initially I could only play mine sat down. I can now balance it standing, preferably with the side extension attached. Like any instrument, familiarity helps.
  11. Always! Have you seen how much they cost? Perversley, on-line banking helps. With no more paper statements she never remembers how much we have in our savings account. As long as the answer is "enough" all is well.
  12. I am still trying to figure out how to smuggle in a second double bass. ☹️
  13. Where abouts are you based? I have a couple of G&Ls, one USA MJ-4 and one Tribute JB-2. The Tributes are terrific value. They are currently imported by Blackstar. P.S. I live in Rutland.
  14. Under use? I don't entirely agree. The interaction with the floor helps the low end. So you get a good spatial and frequency spread which perhaps matters a bit more with a big band where I can be stuck behind a few band members. If you are thinking of buying this cab, do it!
  15. They are great little cabs. An advantage of a second cab is getting part of the array off the floor and nearer ear level. That is what I keep telling myself as I do not want to go through seller's remorse. Again.
  16. No, although it is usually written "Bass Array 10-2". The handle at centre rear, and the bolt holes for the amp cradle remove any doubt - it is the 10" cab. They are superb little cabs. I normally just use one with our big band and it is loud enough as noted.
  17. Speakons are used for good reason. They handle the power and there is no risk of short circuits on removal or insertion.
  18. The Great British Bass Lounge has one in. The pictures on the Facebook page show more of the fingerboard than those on the website (at the time of posting).
  19. Daisy chaining is no problem so long as you do not drop below 4 Ohms. "Only 2 Speakons"! Do you know a small head with more? The Magellans will drive 2.67 Ohms - which in practice means 3 x 8 Ohm cabs. The Magellans are terrific little amps, and the 800 has a convincing drive channel. I stupidly sold mine because the 350 is powerful enough for our jazz big band. The 350 is actually perfect for my needs, but even so it was a daft decision.
  20. I gigged with one for a few years and it was 100% reliable. It was a hifi amp though. If you want grit you might want to look at the Streamline amps if you want a Genz Benz.
  21. Thank you for this discussion. It has prompted me to take a look at the Helix offerings and they do appear to be rather good.
  22. Why puzzled? Because my recollection of the cost was a bit more than that quoted. The amp itself looks very impressive - I have no problem with that side.
  23. I was puzzled by the Quilter suggestions until I saw Thomman’s price. That must be impossible to beat if you need the power. I will stick with my Magellan 350 but, yes, impressive. Assembled in the USA too.
